Chapter 41: An Expensive Shopping Trip

Tauro and Mina arrived at their destination.

Before them stood a large, long-established luxury shop in the royal capital’s magic-tool district.

On their previous visit, the clerk’s attitude had annoyed them, so they had spitefully browsed everything they could and left without buying a thing.

Today they carried themselves even more boldly, because this time they were genuine paying customers.

When they entered, one clerk’s “Ah!” slipped out alongside the chorus of “Welcome!”

“W-welcome. Will you be looking at something again today?”

It was the best sarcasm the clerk could muster after their previous visit; he had his pride too.

Tauro and Mina exchanged defiant smiles.

“Then I’ll take this.”

Tauro pointed to the item.

“S-sir, as I explained last time, this ‘Magic Storage (Large), Backpack Type’ costs ten platinum coins…”

“Yes, I’ll take it.”

The other clerks watching the exchange tensed.

Some thieves claimed they wished to buy an item and then stole it the instant its security magic was disabled. Following the store’s procedure, one clerk approached the entrance and locked the door.

“I’ll pay properly. Here.”

Tauro took ten platinum coins from his leather purse and placed them in the clerk’s hand.

Every employee stared in astonishment.

“I’d also like the ‘Magic Storage (Small), Pouch Type’ that you showed us before. Could you give me a discount?”

This time, Mina was the one taken by surprise.

“Tauro, we weren’t planning to buy that.”

“It’s part of your bonus.”

“But that costs a platinum coin. That’s too much…”

“What are you talking about? The client’s sudden change of plans caused you a great deal of stress this past month. Please let me do at least this much.”

In truth, Mina had planned to buy that very item using her payment and the money she had saved. There was no way she could be unhappy.

“…Thank you. Then I’ll gladly accept it as my reward.”

The manager later appeared, and Tauro bargained with him directly until he secured a thirty-percent discount on the pouch.

Immediately afterward, the Voice of the World spoke.

“One activation condition for the special skill [Garbled Text], <One Who Lets Money Do the Talking (Magic Storage)>, has been confirmed. [Magic Storage (Extreme)] acquired.”

Tauro was stunned to hear the Voice of the World in such an unexpected place.

Worse, he had acquired the ability immediately after paying. Now that he possessed magic storage as a skill, his ten-platinum-coin backpack had become a very expensive redundancy.

Mina saw him sigh.

“Are you changing your mind?”

She had misunderstood his reaction.

“No, that’s not it. I was sighing because…”

Tauro leaned close and whispered into her ear.

“Between you and me, I just heard the Voice of the World and acquired [Magic Storage].”

“Oh…”

The two exchanged rueful smiles.

They continued shopping afterward.

With magic storage at their disposal, they could buy as much as they wished for as long as their money lasted.

Time stood still inside magic storage, so even fresh food wouldn’t spoil.

Mina bought unusual sweets and foods from the royal capital for her family.

She had apparently wanted to let them try such things for a long time.

Tauro also purchased large quantities of spices, sugar, and other ingredients unavailable in Saisi.

One shop after another ran completely out of merchandise.

Tauro and Mina also stopped at an armor shop.

All the money Mina had planned to spend on the magic-storage pouch remained in her purse, so she decided to improve her equipment.

Tauro didn’t own any armor at all. He had mainly gathered medicinal herbs as an adventurer and had never needed it.

However, now that he had risen to E-rank before coming to the capital, he would have to accept monster-subjugation quests. Buying armor was only natural.

He asked Mina to select it for him.

[True Eye] could tell Tauro an item’s value, but not whether it suited him. It was best to rely on a more experienced adventurer.

Knowing he was still a growing child, Mina avoided anything expensive and chose flexible leather armor for him. Tauro agreed, since he might quickly outgrow it.

For herself, Mina selected armor made from the hide of a high-level monster. It was light, durable, and apparently resistant to fire. The price was considerable, but an adventurer who failed to invest in equipment risked paying with her life, so Mina didn’t hesitate.

And so the two spent the entire day shopping.

  1. Reminds me of Death March where Satou gained a skill that would have helped him out against a fight if he had it earlier.
