Chapter 40: Beyond His Imagination
Nearly a month of living and breathing Reversi had passed.
That day, Prince Fleue and Prime Minister Barriera played a Reversi match at the royal palace.
Before the watching high-ranking nobles and Tauro, Fleue achieved a remarkable victory, winning two of three closely fought games against the prime minister. Both Prince Fleue and Tauro, his instructor, rose sharply in everyone’s estimation.
“Satou, may I call you Tauro?”
Apparently emboldened by his victory, the prince bashfully asked Tauro, who had been watching from behind.
“Of course, Your Highness.”
“Tauro, I defeated Barriera thanks to you. Thank you. You may call me Fleue as well.”
“Very well, Prince Fleue.”
“You can leave out ‘Prince.'”
“I could hardly go that far.”
When Tauro answered with a laugh, the Voice of the World echoed in his mind.
“One activation condition for the special skill [Garbled Text], <One Who Befriends a Descendant of the High Elves>, has been confirmed. [Spirit Magic (Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Lightning, Light, Darkness)] acquired.”
Then, immediately afterward:
“One activation condition for the special skill [Garbled Text], <One Who Has a Royal Friend>, has been confirmed. [Prestige] acquired.”
Two skills at such a strange moment!? Tauro was astonished, but this was Fleue’s moment of triumph. He set the matter aside and joined in the celebration.

Tauro’s contract as a Reversi instructor in the royal capital came to an end.
At last, he was free from Reversi, from the tense days, from all of it.
Alone on the inn’s terrace, Tauro thrust a fist into the air.
He tried out his new [Spirit Magic] there, but the results were underwhelming.
He could see spirits, summon them, and cast magic. Up to that point, it was the perfect development for a story about another world. The spells themselves, however, were surprisingly feeble.
His fire was about as strong as a lighter’s flame. He could summon enough water to drink, and at that rate he expected little from earth. Wind produced only a breeze strong enough to dry laundry, lightning amounted to a static shock useful for annoying someone, and light merely illuminated a room. Darkness might at least prove useful in battle because it could obstruct an opponent’s vision.
In short, his abilities were on the level of household magic.
“Well, [Purification] was the only magic I could use before, so even household magic is a big improvement. And if I keep using it, perhaps it’ll improve as I gain proficiency.”
Tauro chose to look on the bright side.
The real problem was [Prestige].
It appeared to radiate authority toward those weaker than its user. What use could a commoner like him have for that? He remembered testing it on a passing child and frightening the poor boy. It would be difficult to use safely.
Someone knocked on the door.
It was Mina, ready to go out.
Tauro had planned to spend the rest of the day shopping with her, including for souvenirs.
He had received the combined payment for instructing Fleue, the prime minister, and the high-ranking nobles, and the amount had exceeded his wildest expectations.
At first, the leather purse had felt lighter than he had imagined, leaving him secretly disappointed. When he opened it, however, he discovered that it contained nothing but platinum coins.
Mina peered inside and stared in shock, while Tauro shrieked and froze.
Sebas, who delivered the money, relayed the prince’s words: “It’s pathetic to express my gratitude to a friend with money, but please accept it.” He added that the prime minister and the other nobles had also contributed generously.
The total came to twenty platinum coins.
Tauro had already become fairly wealthy from his share of the profits at the Yasuragi Inn in Saisi and a portion of the Reversi sales, but even he hadn’t expected this much.
The spending power of royalty and nobles was terrifying.
Still, the size of the reward immediately settled how he would use it.
Tauro and Mina decided to visit that place first.
