Chapter 306: The Viscount’s End
Late that night, Tauro returned to Marquis Van Dyne’s residence and reported everything he had witnessed at Marquis Halagoura’s estate.
“What? Viscount Saissi surrendered to the Kingdom Knights?”
“Yes. I remained until I saw him leave. Marquis Halagoura appears to intend to dispose of him after the surrender.”
“I see. At least that may prevent the kingdom from being divided over this affair… Wait. Did you say you listened to a private conversation inside Marquis Halagoura’s residence?”
“Yes. I entered the estate unnoticed and eavesdropped outside the study.”
“Have you lost your mind? You’re at the center of this entire conflict. I’m relieved that you returned safely, but don’t take such risks again. My daughter is worried about you, and so is Count Graunewald, who has only just adopted you.”
Marquis Van Dyne was equal parts astonished and concerned by the thirteen-year-old’s recklessness.
“I’m sorry. But regarding Saissi, Halagoura’s people are almost certainly preparing to silence him.”
“I understand. Saissi could become a valuable witness against Marquis Halagoura, but protecting him and forcing a full confession would provoke an open confrontation with the entire Halagoura faction. Politically, both sides now have reason to let him disappear.”
Marquis Van Dyne didn’t suggest warning the Kingdom Knights. In that moment, Viscount Saissi had effectively been abandoned by allies and enemies alike.
The next morning, a report reached the Van Dyne residence.
“Viscount Saissi died while being held at Kingdom Knights headquarters. Officials claim he used a concealed knife to take his own life.”
Marquis Van Dyne summoned Tauro and the others and shared the news.
“Even if it’s officially called suicide, it was almost certainly an assassination made to resemble one. In any case, Saissi’s role in this affair has ended.”
“Then Tauro will no longer be hunted because of him.”
Aeris released a long breath of relief.
“That’s good news. It feels as though a weight has finally been removed.”
Ankh smiled and patted Tauro’s shoulder.
“Now all of us can adventure together again!”
Ragune spoke with open delight.
“It still doesn’t feel real. Thank you, everyone. You helped remove one major reason the Assassins’ Guild was targeting me. Saissi was the person who held a personal grudge against me, so I believe this particular threat is finally settled.”
The resolution seemed almost too simple after so much danger, and Tauro had difficulty accepting that the long pursuit was over.
“Ah—Ragune, I have work waiting in the dragonfolk village. Can you open [Dimensional Corridor]? We can celebrate properly afterward.”
Tauro had nearly forgotten that he was supposed to collect Salaan’s party and Salaman from the dungeon.
“Now?”
Even Ragune was taken aback by the sudden change of subject.
“Of course we’re going with you,” Aeris said. “This is supposed to be a celebration, isn’t it?”
“Ha! Then all of us will accompany him,” Ankh added enthusiastically.
“Tauro, can this not wait a little?” Marquis Van Dyne asked, unable to follow the abrupt transition.
“I’m sorry. People are already waiting for me. It would be better to finish the assignment before any further delay.”
“I had hoped you could meet Count Graunewald and discuss your future. How long will this work require?”
“No more than half a day, I expect. I’ll return afterward.”
“Very well. Go quickly. I’ll explain the change of plans to Count Graunewald.”
The marquis sighed and waved them onward.
“Thank you. But are all of you truly coming? It’s only a pickup request, and I can complete it alone.”
“We want to accompany you,” Ankh said. “You’re already late, so stop wasting time and move.”
Aeris immediately took Tauro’s hand in preparation for [Spatial Transfer].
“Then I’ll open [Dimensional Corridor].”
Ragune created the narrow passage. Tauro, Aeris, and Ankh vanished together through the combined movement skills.
After bowing briefly to Marquis Van Dyne, Ragune followed them.
“No matter how often I see that, I can’t become accustomed to it.”
The marquis laughed softly and summoned a servant to inform Count Graunewald of the schedule change.
