Chapter 288: The Adoption Proposal (2)
The morning after Tauro learned of the adoption proposal, Ragune came to collect him through [Dimensional Corridor]. He immediately used [Spatial Transfer] to reach the Royal Capital and arrived at Marquis Van Dyne’s residence.
Aeris, Ankh, Marquis Van Dyne, and an unfamiliar nobleman were waiting for him.
“Aeris, Ankh, it’s been a while. Ragune has been keeping me informed, but I’m glad to see you both looking well.”
At his greeting, Aeris lowered her head, slowly approached him, and quietly wrapped her arms around him.
“You haven’t been doing anything reckless on your own, have you? That was all I could worry about. You do reckless things even when we’re with you.”
Still holding him, Aeris spoke anxiously. Tauro returned the embrace and gently patted her back.
“Well… I was a little reckless, but everything worked out.”
Tauro admitted.
“I knew it! I knew no one would be able to stop you without us there.”
Aeris released him and stared at him in exasperation.
“It’ll be all right. Ragune may already have told you, but I made a new friend, so I won’t be alone from now on. Pella, come and say hello.”
Tauro was dressed casually, and Pella was mimicking his belt. He touched the familiar and prompted it to greet everyone.
Pella released its mimicry and revealed itself before Aeris and the others.
“So this is Pella… Ragune said it’s a Slime Emperor, the supposed pinnacle of the slime species—a creature whose existence aboveground has never even been confirmed!”
Ankh stepped out from beside Aeris and studied Pella intently.
Pella bounced several times, then stretched and contracted its body as though offering a greeting.
“It’s nice to meet you, Pella. Tauro is bound to do all sorts of reckless things, so please protect him.”
At Aeris’s greeting, Pella sprang onto her shoulder, rubbed against her cheek, then returned to Tauro and resumed mimicking his belt.
It appeared to be promising that it would protect him.
“I’d like to hear more about that slime myself, but I think that’s enough of the reunion for now. You should greet our other guest as well. This is Count Graunewald, who has been interested in adopting you for quite some time.”
Marquis Van Dyne introduced the nobleman, whom Tauro didn’t remember ever meeting.
“I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”
Tauro turned toward Marquis Van Dyne and the count and bowed.
“It’s been a long time, Marquis Van Dyne. Thank you for everything you’ve done on my behalf. Count Graunewald, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Tauro. Thank you for taking the time to discuss the adoption.”
He bowed deeply to the mild-mannered, slender count before him. The gentleman appeared to be in his thirties and had purple hair and blue eyes.
“Not at all. My wife and I’ve been interested in you ever since the marquis first proposed the idea. We’re delighted that we may be able to adopt you. Whenever my wife receives a report about you, she becomes even more eager to meet you. She’s very fond of what she has learned of your character.”
Count Graunewald seemed delighted to meet the boy he knew only through reports and examined Tauro curiously from several angles.
He appeared to be an exceptionally inquisitive man.
Oddly, although the count was scrutinizing him, Tauro didn’t find it unpleasant.
Ragune then returned through [Dimensional Corridor].
“Sorry I’m late. I was speaking with my brother. —Huh? What’s happening now?”
Unable to follow the situation, Ragune looked from Tauro and Aeris to Marquis Van Dyne and the count.
“Why don’t we all sit down and talk first?”
Although it was hardly his place to host them, Tauro gestured for Marquis Van Dyne and Count Graunewald to sit, then settled into one of the parlor’s plush chairs.
“Today, we’ll have Tauro sign the adoption documents first. Immediately afterward, we’ll begin pursuing the case against Viscount Saissi. You have no objection to that, Count Graunewald?”
Marquis Van Dyne sought confirmation from the count seated beside him.
“None at all. Tauro’s safety comes first. As we agreed earlier, our first priority is to expose Viscount Saissi’s crimes publicly. After that, I intend to respect Tauro’s wishes. My wife and I are great admirers of his, after all. I always look forward to the reports about him. Ha ha ha!”
Count Graunewald’s warm response made his affection for Tauro plain.
Tauro found himself wondering exactly what Ankh had written in those reports.
Pleased by the count’s enthusiasm, he glanced toward Ankh.
Their eyes met, but Ankh immediately looked away, began whistling, and pretended not to notice him.
