Chapter 27: Tauro’s Father Appears

As usual, Tauro had been helping with the guild’s morning work.

After a while, the adventurers who had accepted quests departed one after another, and the commotion in the lobby gradually subsided.

Tauro’s work was nearly finished, so he was examining the notice board for a quest when a man entered.

The newcomer was plainly dressed and obviously not an adventurer.

Tauro sensed his presence but continued searching the board without concern.

The man paused for an instant. Rather than approaching reception, however, his heavy footsteps came directly toward Tauro from behind.

Feeling open hostility drawing near, Tauro turned warily and found his father standing there.

“What are you doing here? You ran away from home, you worthless brat!”

As soon as the man recognized Tauro, he cursed at him and swung a fist.

Tauro reflexively dodged.

The missed punch threw his father off balance and sent him tumbling.

Enraged that Tauro had evaded him, his father shouted.

“Who said you were allowed to dodge, you bastard!”

He lunged forward and tried to grab Tauro.

Tauro easily avoided that attempt too, leaving his father stumbling from his own momentum.

“Excuse me! What do you think you’re doing?”

Nei reprimanded him from behind the reception desk.

The adventurers who remained in the lobby joined her.

“Violence is forbidden inside the guild, old man!”

Tauro’s father had no choice but to restrain himself.

He quickly recovered, however, and barked another order.

“Where are you staying? Pack your things. We’re going home!”

He seized Tauro’s wrist, but Tauro immediately shook him off.

“I have no intention of returning to that place,” Tauro replied firmly.

Shocked by his son’s defiance, the man flew into another rage.

“Who the hell do you think you’re talking to?”

He tried to punch Tauro yet again.

Utterly disgusted, Tauro dodged once more.

This man hadn’t changed at all.

Tauro could only sigh.

He wanted to kick his father in the backside as the man staggered past him, but violence was forbidden in the guild, so he held himself back.

“If we stay here, we’ll cause trouble for everyone. Let’s go outside and talk.”

“Who are you to order me—”

His father began to object, but noticed Nei and the remaining adventurers glaring at him. Intimidated, he reluctantly obeyed.

Nei was worried and tried to accompany Tauro, but he declined with a shake of his head.

This was a matter between father and son. He couldn’t drag Nei into it.

They moved next door to Yasuragi-tei, the restaurant operated by the guild. The moment they sat down, Tauro’s father began shouting.

“What happened to the money from the mithril? You donated it without my permission! Anything you own belongs to me—your parent! Hand over what remains, along with everything else you’ve earned!”

Tauro sighed.

He had known this would happen.

The rumors must have reached his old village.

His father had probably forgotten all about him until now. The moment a large sum of money became involved, however, he had suddenly remembered that he was a parent.

“I used part of the money from the mithril sale and donated all the rest. The money I earned through my own work belongs to me, and I have no intention of giving it to you.”

Tauro refused as politely as he could.

His answer sent his father into another rage. The man reached across the table to grab him, but Tauro slapped his hand away.

How long would it take this man to realize that force wouldn’t work?

“You ungrateful bastard! What about everything you owe your parent?”

He had learned a little, at least. This time, he tried an emotional appeal.

“All I remember is being kicked and punched every day.”

Naturally, Tauro remained unmoved.

“That was discipline! And I fed you every day!”

“Isn’t that the bare minimum duty of a parent? I remember occasions when you failed to do even that.”

Growing tired of the man’s persistence, Tauro answered with biting sarcasm.

At that moment, two men entered the restaurant and walked toward their table.

“Soak, did you get the money from your son?”

I see. So that’s what this is about.

Tauro quickly understood the situation.

“I was just about to make him hand it over. Please give me a little more time.”

His father was openly frightened and spoke to the men with pathetic deference.

Tauro considered how best to handle the situation.
