Chapter 26: Adventurer Ranks

Now that his journey to the royal capital had been decided, Tauro became busier than ever.

He had to make ten limited-edition Reversi boards. At the same time, now that he had been promoted, he hoped to take on a quest from the E-rank bracket.

Accepting quests was part of his daily routine, but for the moment he was filling the gaps in his schedule with quick and efficient herb-gathering quests.

“I want to finish these limited-edition boards soon and complete an E-rank quest before I leave for the capital.”

Tauro thought about it as he carved the wood.

That evening, adventurers arrived in droves to report the completion of their quests, and Tauro rushed about helping the guild staff.

The sight had become one of the Adventurers’ Guild’s Saisi branch specialties.

However, two adventurers found it irritating.

They had recently arrived from another city.

“So kids are allowed to wander around the guild in this backwater branch? What an eyesore!”

“I saw him looking at the quests earlier like he belonged here. Since when did the guild start babysitting brats? I don’t understand how people think out in the countryside!”

The two outsiders spoke loudly enough to ensure that Tauro could hear them.

Tauro wasn’t surprised. [Presence Detection] had alerted him to their hostility for some time, so he had already suspected something like this would happen.

They were probably among the “low-quality E-rank adventurers” Branch Manager Leo had mentioned.

Their copper tags immediately identified them as members of the E-rank bracket.

If Tauro could hear them while helping the staff some distance away, then the other adventurers could hear them too.

The local adventurers were irritated both by the insults directed at their fellow adventurer and by the description of their guild as a backwater branch.

Even so, adventurers didn’t lose their tempers over insults of this level.

Such scenes were commonplace.

Emboldened by the lack of a response, one of the E-rank adventurers put on an aggrieved expression.

“Having a brat like that around makes people underestimate the rest of us too.”

You’re the ones underestimating us more than anyone!

For one instant, every local adventurer in the lobby seemed to share the same thought.

“I don’t know what you’ve misunderstood, but Satou—the ‘brat’ you’re talking about—is a proper adventurer. He’s in the same E-rank bracket as you.”

The leader of the hastily assembled C-rank team Blue Guardian spoke for everyone present.

He was the leader of the makeshift team that had distinguished itself during the emergency quest after Tauro gave them a potion.

“A brat is an adventurer!? And he’s in the same E-rank bracket as us? Even coming from a C-rank adventurer, that’s a terrible joke!”

Apparently convinced that Roy was joking, the two E-rank adventurers burst into laughter.

In broad terms, adventurer ranks were evaluated as follows:

G rank: amateur

F rank: beginner

E rank: ordinary

D rank: veteran

C rank: powerful

B rank: first-rate

A rank: elite

S rank: legendary

To someone who didn’t know Tauro, treating a ten-year-old as an “ordinary adventurer” might indeed have sounded like a bad joke.

“It’s the truth. I don’t know what your former branch was like, but the adventurers here are better than those in most places. Our branch manager and combat instructor are both former A-rank adventurers. Under their instruction, even a ‘brat’ can become stronger than you.”

Roy, the leader of Blue Guardian, delivered the cutting reply, and the local adventurers erupted with delight.

“Gahaha! That’s going too far, Roy! Now I almost feel sorry for them!”

“Serves them right!”

“Exactly! Our adventurers are good!”

The pent-up frustration in the lobby finally spilled out.

Surrounded by the sudden sense of solidarity, the two E-rank adventurers could no longer bear to stay and hurried out of the guild.

Branch Manager Leo and Instructor Daz were former A-rank adventurers!?

Tauro was more astonished by that revelation than by Roy’s defense of him.

The day after the minor confrontation in the guild lobby, the two E-rank adventurers left the city.

They had seemed remarkably thick-skinned, but apparently they were sensitive when the embarrassment was their own.
