Chapter 17: Tauro’s Battle
Tauro’s new abilities were extraordinarily useful.
They operated on an entirely different level from merely suppressing his breathing or noticing someone nearby.
First was [Presence Concealment].
It did far more than help an amateur hide. The ability interfered with perception itself, making it difficult for others to notice Tauro even when he stood directly before them.
Then there was [Presence Detection], which linked with [True Eye].
Whenever a presence entered his range, Tauro felt a warning through his senses and saw its silhouette with [True Eye]. The ability also reacted to murderous intent and other hostile feelings.
Both skills were indispensable to an adventurer trying to stay alive.
Tauro didn’t use [Presence Concealment] constantly, but he kept [Presence Detection] active as often as possible for training.
He soon noticed things he had never perceived before.
In the city, malice sometimes reached him from the back alleys. When he looked toward its source, he saw the older vagrants who had once stolen food from him, radiating obvious jealousy.
Surprisingly, no one inside the Adventurers’ Guild directed any ill will toward him.
Perhaps it was because he helped the staff, because the age gap was too great for anyone to see him as a rival, or simply because he had earned their acceptance. Veteran adventurers had even begun speaking to him from time to time.
Tauro decided to use [Presence Concealment] to blend into crowds while in town and to maintain [Presence Detection] at all times.
When he tried concealing himself inside the guild, however, Leo noticed.
“Think about where you use that!”
The branch manager rapped Tauro on the head, and Tauro immediately stopped.
Apparently, [Presence Concealment] and [Presence Detection] could overcome one another depending on the user’s skill.
Tauro resolved to improve both.
His quests became even more efficient. While gathering herbs, he could detect monsters and change course before encountering them.
Avoiding danger altogether was an extremely useful way to remain safe.
One-Horned Rabbits were wary and quick to flee, so adventurers normally trapped them. With [Presence Concealment], Tauro could instead approach from behind and finish one with his short sword.
He was still discovered fairly often, however. The rabbit’s natural senses were sometimes better than his concealment.
Tauro wanted to improve until he could pass completely unnoticed.
Just then, a person entered the range of [Presence Detection].
One individual was coming toward him.
The silhouette appeared to be an adventurer.
A man burst through the bushes. Tauro recognized him as a member of Five Arrows, a D-rank team based at the Saisi branch.
“Satou!? Good—you’re here! Contact the guild. Our team encountered a goblin horde and we’re fighting them now. We need reinforcements. Approximately eighty enemies!”
“Understood!”
Tauro began running the instant he heard the report.
The messenger turned back the way he had come, evidently returning to help his companions.
Tauro raced toward the city.
With Agility +5 enhancing his speed, he reached the guild quickly. As soon as Leo heard the report, he declared an emergency quest.
The guild assembled a team from the adventurers who happened to be available and dispatched them at once.
“Tauro, guide this improvised D-rank team to the others. After that, act as a messenger,” Leo ordered.
Tauro would use Agility +5 together with [Presence Detection] and [Presence Concealment] to run between the teams and keep them informed.
It was the ideal assignment—almost as though Leo had already guessed the nature of Tauro’s abilities.
Guided by Tauro, the rapid-response team reached the battlefield.
Five Arrows was conducting a desperate fighting retreat. Their shield bearer stood between the goblins and his companions, blocking attack after attack, while a female mage held the horde back with fire.
Their swordsman had been wounded and was retreating with an arm over the healer’s shoulder. The archer watched every direction and threatened any goblin that approached the injured man.
“Satou, report the situation to the teams behind us and guide them here. We’re joining the fight.”
“Understood. Oh—please take this!”
Tauro handed one of his potions to the swordsman leading the improvised team.
“This is valuable. Are you sure?”
The leader hesitated. It belonged to an F-rank child who couldn’t be earning much.
“Don’t worry. I made it myself, but I know it works.”
The words “made it myself” visibly surprised the man.
“All right.”
He accepted the potion, then led his team into the goblin horde.
After watching them enter the battle, Tauro set off once more to inform the reinforcements following behind.
