Chapter 16: Looking Back

After completing his first F-rank quest, Tauro continued accepting herb-gathering quests almost exclusively.

They were quick and efficient.

He spent the time he saved training with a sword and, more recently, a bow. He also began visiting Angus to learn the basics of smithing and tried compounding medicines by following books.

Tauro had a reason for pursuing so many different subjects.

The activation conditions for his [Garbled Text] skill were far too unusual.

<Soul Return from Death> granted [Memories of a Previous Life].

He had been revived by sheer accident when a kick jolted him back to life.

<Washing Away Years of Grime> granted [Purification].

He had washed two years’ worth of filth from his body in a bath. Ordinarily, no one would remain that dirty for two years, and anyone forced into such conditions would be unlikely to have access to a bath.

<A Knower of the Genuine Revered by an Expert> granted [True Eye].

That condition would normally be impossible without years of knowledge and wisdom, as well as the charisma to earn an expert’s reverence.

<The Evangelist of Food> granted [Knowledge of Plants].

He had accomplished that only because he possessed knowledge from his previous life.

Every condition was so peculiar that no one living an ordinary life could fulfill it overnight.

Because Tauro had no way of knowing when another opportunity might arise, he had begun trying all sorts of things.

He wanted to accumulate knowledge and experience little by little, bringing himself closer to whatever conditions might unlock more abilities.

Besides, steady effort had never bothered him.

In his previous life, he had devoted his entire youth to trying to travel to another world.

He had ended up reincarnating instead, but still…

Tauro never spared any effort.

*

A year and a half passed after he began those pursuits.

Tauro was now ten years old.

Two years had passed since he regained the memories of his previous life, and his adventurer rank had risen to F+.

Yet he hadn’t acquired a single new ability during that time.

“Hmm… I really haven’t learned anything new in the last year and a half.”

He had devised another successful dish for the guild’s restaurant, taught Angus how to forge a new weapon called a katana, and trained with a variety of weapons.

Only a few days earlier, he had finally slain a One-Horned Rabbit and completed his first monster hunt.

“The god warned me, but this world really isn’t easy.”

Tauro sighed.

Still, his efforts hadn’t been fruitless.

After trying so many disciplines, Tauro discovered that he learned quickly and was unusually dexterous.

In his previous life, that would merely have made him one of those people who happened to be good at many things. In this world, however, skills changed the situation.

Most people had no talent at all for abilities that weren’t supported by one of their skills. Becoming competent in many unrelated fields should have been almost impossible.

Yet Tauro managed reasonably well at all of them.

Two years was far too little time to know whether he could master them, but he began to suspect that this strange versatility might be connected to the secret of [Garbled Text].

That day, Tauro had traveled deep into a forest northeast of the city for his usual herb-gathering quest.

If he harvested the same forest repeatedly, he would eventually strip it bare. He therefore rotated among several locations and had become thoroughly familiar with the forests surrounding the city.

Valuable medicinal herbs were more common deeper in any forest.

As Tauro gathered them with his usual efficiency, he sensed the presence of monsters—also as usual.

The farther one ventured into a forest, the more likely such encounters became.

Most of the monsters Tauro encountered were goblins, although orcs appeared in certain areas.

Today’s presence seemed to be goblins.

They hadn’t noticed him yet.

Tauro suppressed his presence as best he could and began his usual retreat.

Then the long-absent voice of the world sounded in his mind.

“One activation condition for special skill [Garbled Text]—<A Mighty One Who Keeps Fleeing from Goblins>—confirmed. [Presence Detection] and [Presence Concealment] acquired.”

“Keeps fleeing…? I mean, you’re not wrong, but still!”

Tauro retorted to the voice of the world as he withdrew from the area.

      1. I was thinking the same thing and wonder if it meant “katana” since that is a sword and tends to be one not known by that time period (if I remember its because of the folding technique for the haze or something?)
