Chapter 116: Escort Quest

“Excuse me, Tauro-kun… I have another favor to ask.”

Marches arrived at Tauro’s house that morning, looking apologetic.

“What is it? Please come inside instead of standing out here.”

Tauro invited Marches into the house.

“…The truth is, another job has come up.”

 Marches explained uneasily.

“Something besides the O’Circus delivery?”

“…Yes.”

“That’s good news, is it not?”

Tauro was genuinely pleased for him.

He couldn’t understand why Marches looked so guilty.

“It’s, but the new work means I can’t leave Dansas for two weeks…”

“…Ah. Does that mean you can’t travel to O’Circus?”

“Exactly. Would you be willing to go in my place, Tauro-kun?”

 It was an audacious request.

Tauro had developed the refrigerator, but he had entrusted its sale and distribution to the Marches Trading Company. Asking him to take over the merchant’s role as well would hardly be fair.

Marches clearly understood that, which was why the request pained him.

“Marches-san, you employ other merchants, do you not?”

“Yes, but why do you ask?”

“Appoint one of them as your representative.”

“What? Most of our employees were hired only recently. I can’t entrust something this important to just anyone!”

“I can assist with the negotiations, but I’m still a child. It would be unwise for me to represent your company. Shin and Rumeya aren’t suited to business negotiations either.”

“Hmm… I understand. Then perhaps one of our more capable merchants… Yes, I have an employee named Leada. I’ll tell her to prepare immediately!”

Marches pictured the employee he intended to appoint.

“Then our main duties will be escorting your representative, transporting the goods, and assisting her with negotiations. Is that correct?”

 Tauro confirmed the revised terms.

“Yes, exactly! Please excuse me—I must tell Leada and make sure everything is ready.”

Marches bowed repeatedly in thanks before hurrying back to the Marches Trading Company.

“Are you sure about this? It sounds as though nearly all the responsibility has fallen on you,”

Aeris said as she emerged from the adjoining room, having overheard the entire conversation.

“Hmm… It’ll be demanding, but Marches-san is in a difficult position. As the inventor, I also want to ensure the refrigerators sell well. I suppose I’ll have to help this time.”

“Then I have no objection. For us, it’s still fundamentally an escort quest.”

Satisfied with his answer, Aeris began preparing for the journey.

A few days later, the guild branch formally offered Black-Gold Wings a long-term quest: escort a merchant to O’Circus and back. The trip would take roughly one week each way, for a two-week round journey, and departure was scheduled for several days later.

Naturally, Tauro and his team accepted.

At the planning meeting, Marches introduced Leada to Tauro.

“I’m Tauro, leader of Black-Gold Wings. My team has been assigned to escort you and transport the goods.”

Tauro greeted Leada, whom he had never met before.

She was a smartly dressed woman with dark eyes and long red hair tied in a ponytail. Her practical clothing suited a traveling merchant.

Her glasses gave her a capable appearance, although her uncertain expression betrayed a lack of confidence.

Marches regarded Leada as a promising candidate to become his right-hand woman. He hoped the journey to O’Circus would help her gain confidence.

Tauro realized that the assignment was also intended as training for her.

His workload appeared to have increased yet again, but he kept that observation to himself. Leada’s performance would ultimately depend on her.

“I’ll leave the negotiations to you, Tauro-kun, but Leada has considerable commercial knowledge. Consult her whenever you need advice.”

 Marches instructed him.

“Understood. I’ll discuss matters with her during the journey and make use of her expertise.”

Tauro nodded, exchanged another greeting with Leada, and shook her hand. With that, the meeting concluded.

Several days later, once all preparations were complete, Leada, Tauro, and the rest of Black-Gold Wings boarded a carriage provided by the Marches Trading Company and departed for O’Circus, the kingdom’s second-largest city.
