Chapter 417: Pursuit

After capturing the villains, Tauro and his party treated the injured, loaded them onto the carriage, and decided to head back to the capital.

Of course, Garde’s request took priority, so they planned to return to work as soon as the villains were handed over to the territorial soldiers.

 But Garde,

“I don’t mind at all if we’re a day or two late, since the time has been shortened for a few days.”

He was afraid to trouble Tauro.*

Although Garde was the employer of Tauro and his group, he was a territorial inspector, which is a position that is similar to that of a close aide to the lord.

He didn’t know how to deal with it.

Tauro felt bad about this and decided to move forward and say what he had actually planned to propose to Garde when this job was finished.

It was the loan of a bag with magic storage (medium).

This was one of the items that Tauro had bought in bulk at a magic tool shop when he was based in the royal capital.

I had lent some of the small magic storage pouches to mountain villages I visited while traveling from the village of Dansas, which I used to use as my base, but I never had the opportunity to lend out the medium-sized one that I had purchased at the same time.

By lending it to Garde, he hoped to solve the problem of relying on adventurers for transportation.

“What?! If you say a magical item with magic storage, that’s a shocking price! I know that there is one bag with magic storage (medium) that is being sold in a shop in the capital, but it costs seven platinum coins!?”

Garde gasped at the expensive bag that was presented before him.

I bargained it down to five platinum coins in the royal capital, but that shop is really ripping you off…

Tauro was inwardly dismayed by the information from Garde, but to be honest, him and the rest of the “Black Golden Wings” were D+ rank adventurers.

The price of hiring Tauro and his team was, in fact, quite expensive.

If that is the case, it would be better to borrow a magic storage bag from Tauro and travel on a single horse, which would save time, money, and the cost of hiring a person and using a carriage.*

“Would you lend me such an expensive and useful thing?”

If it were the usual Garde, such an offer would have been too good to be true and he  would have undoubtedly been skeptical r it, but the other party was an inspector of the territory.

 It is definitely trustworthy.

“Yes, how about this for the monthly fee?”

 Tauro offered a rental fee.

“…… this amount is enough to pay for itself. …… But is it okay?  even if you set it higher, I’ll still borrow it?”

 Garde confided his honest opinion.

“Haha! Then let’s sign a multi-year contract. That way, we can rest assured that we will have a stable income for the long term. It’s a win-win situation for both of us, and our interests are aligned, so it should be fine, right?”

“A multi-year contract… I see! That’ll be fine!”

Garde thus accepted Tauro’s proposal and rented the bag with magic storage (medium), making it easier to transport crops in the future.

Upon arriving in the capital, Garde immediately put his belongings into the magic storage bag he borrowed from Tauro and headed off to his client, while Tauro and his friends took the captured villains to the castle gate and asked the gatekeepers to hand them over to the territory soldiers.

The gatekeeper was surprised to see a familiar face among the bad guys and initially refused to believe Tauro and his friends’ story.

Then Tauro presented his badge as an inspector of the territory.

 The gatekeepers were surprised.

The gatekeeper then wanted to hear the full story, so he led Tauro and the others to his office, where they locked up the captured villains in the detention room. However, one of the gatekeepers still couldn’t believe it, so he untied the merchant Grado and tried to talk to him in a separate room.

He seemed to think there must have been some kind of mistake.

However, the merchant Grado took advantage of the situation and pretended to go to the bathroom, and escaped.

“He…he ran away!”

The gatekeeper hurriedly chased after Grado, but he disappeared into the crowd.

But Tauro was quick to react.

“This might be a good thing!”*

Tauro made the decision to chase after Grado using “presence detection” as he ran out of the guardhouse.

“Ragune, guys, continue explaining things to the gatekeepers and keep an eye on the bad guys! I’ll go find where he ran off to!”

Tauro said, and then followed Grado away and disappeared into the crowd.

“…Leader, if it’s not you who explains it, they won’t be able to trust us.”

Ankh was taken aback, but he said a few words to the gatekeeper,

“Go get the old man who is the captain of the guard of the lord’s castle. Tell him that Ankh is asking for him, and he will send someone.”

 He told them.

The gatekeepers exchanged glances, then sent one of the fastest guards running to the castle.

Tauro switched to “true eyes” and followed Grado’s trail, since “presence detection” was not very useful due to the large number of people in the capital.

Grado must have known he was being chased, as he slipped through the crowd and into a back alley, moving swiftly on his feet.

After making his way through the crowd, Tauro, just in case, decided to use invisibility magic to make himself invisible and pursue him from the back alley.

He also used “presence blocking,” so Grado wouldn’t notice him.

Grado continued to move through the alleyways, checking behind him several times, and then he turned a corner.

Tauro hurried around the corner, but Grado was gone.

The street was a dead end, so there was no way he could have escaped. ……

When Tauro checked with his “true eyes”, he saw Grado walking down behind the wall, as if descending.

“…That means…”

Tauro looked at the wall using his ‘anti-inhibition’ ability.

There, I see a indentation that has been enchanted with cognitive inhibition magic.

“This is it…”

Tauro pressed the indentation, and with a click, the shape of a door appeared out of the wall and it opened.

“This is really elaborate…”

Impressed, Tauro opens the door to find a staircase leading to a basement
