Chapter 18: A New Challenge
Tauro found the next team, ran over, and delivered his report.
The reinforcements were led by Branch Manager Leo, who carried a battle-axe. With him was Silver Sword: Mauve, a swordsman recently promoted to C+ rank, along with a shield bearer, a scout, and a healer.
“Understood. Return to the guild, report to the others, and then rest.”
Leo and his companions raced toward the battlefield.
Tauro made it back to the guild, gasped out his report, and collapsed.
He had sprinted the entire distance from the depths of the forest to the city and back again—forest, guild, forest, guild.
The Agility +5 imbued in Angus’s short sword increased his speed, but it did nothing for his stamina.
Tauro had reached his limit.
He caught a glimpse of Nei rushing toward him before he lost consciousness.
When Tauro awoke, the guild was noisy despite the late hour.
Five Arrows had been rescued. There were injuries, but everyone had survived, and the goblins had been wiped out.
All the adventurers had returned.
From their conversations, Tauro learned that the improvised team had fought fiercely and turned the battle around. When Leo’s group arrived, they completely eradicated the remaining goblins.
“I’m glad everyone is safe.”
Tauro relaxed, relieved.
The leader of the improvised team approached him.
“Satou, that potion was a great help. Thanks to it, we could keep fighting without worrying about minor injuries. The guild says it’ll reimburse you.”
“I’m just glad everyone returned safely. All I could do was run, so hearing that’s more than enough.”
“No. Five Arrows avoided disaster because you reported the attack so quickly. You did your job well.”
The leader patted Tauro’s shoulder and walked away.
His words made Tauro feel that he had contributed despite lacking a combat skill.
“Hmm… I’m glad I helped, but not having any combat skills still worries me.”
Back in his room, Tauro reflected on what he lacked as an adventurer.
Instructor Daz had begun praising his handling of weapons, but Tauro possessed no true combat skill.
That might be enough when he only had to protect himself. If he ever needed to save someone else, as he had today, it was frighteningly inadequate.
He had another question as well.
His short sword granted Swordsmanship +2.
Did that bonus work on someone who didn’t possess a swordsmanship skill? Could two be added to nothing, or not?
Tauro felt more capable with a sword than with spears, bows, shields, maces, staves, or unarmed combat, but that feeling proved nothing.
“I won’t know unless I fight something at least as strong as a goblin. But goblins almost always travel in groups, so facing them alone would be dangerous.”
Joining a team temporarily would give him a chance to test himself, but no group was likely to accept a ten-year-old child even on a provisional basis.
For now, he had no opportunity.
“So I’m back to the same answer…”
Tauro sighed.
“I’ll just have to keep training tomorrow.”
The moment he lay down, he fell asleep.
