Chapter 133: How Long Does It Last?
Several days later, on the night of the full moon, the knights returned with moonlight-butterfly scales gathered using the insect nets. For some reason, they all looked unusually cheerful.
“Lord Julius, may we continue using these nets?”
“Catching insects is surprisingly enjoyable.”
“Of course.”
It seemed I had opened a new door for them. Other knights had already begun borrowing the nets to catch different insects.
Many potion ingredients came from insects, so improving their collection skills could only help. I decided not to introduce insect cages or breeding boxes, however. Not everyone in the quarters would appreciate rooms full of bugs.
Once I received the materials, I shut myself inside the compounding room.
“At last, moonlight-butterfly scales. Now I can make the transformation potion. There’s enough for several batches, although I don’t intend to make many.”
I arranged the ingredients on the compounding table: moonlight-butterfly scales, distilled water, killer-bee honey, hair and mature Chigo berries. Every ingredient was high quality, so the resulting potion should last a long time.
First, I thoroughly mixed the honey and scales, then added the mature Chigo berries. The result resembled sparkling orange syrup.
Next, I placed the hair in distilled water and slowly raised the temperature. After reducing the liquid to half its original volume, I dissolved the syrup into it.
The finished potion was a clear, brilliant orange liquid.
Transformation Potion: highest quality. Target appearance: Julius Heine. Duration: long. Taste: sweet.
The compounding had succeeded. The vague “long” duration concerned me, but I could adjust the effect by changing the dose. First, I needed a test subject.
Lionel was still the obvious choice. He would be the one moving around during the operation, so he needed time to become accustomed to my body.
I found him in his office.
“Is this the transformation potion?”
He stared at the orange liquid as though it might bite him.
“I don’t know its exact duration. Let us begin with one spoonful.”
“Very well, but what about my clothing?”
Only then did I realise the problem. The potion transformed the body, not clothing. In the game, equipment had changed automatically, but reality was less convenient.
For the test, Lionel brought a large towel. It would keep him covered if his clothes became too large.
“Go ahead.”
“Then, if you’ll excuse me.”
The effect was immediate. Lionel’s large frame rapidly shrank until another Julius stood before me.
His eyes widened as his viewpoint dropped. He flexed his hands and checked his balance.
“I never imagined such a potion existed.”
There was no obvious discomfort. We only needed to measure the duration.
Thirty minutes passed, and he still looked exactly like me. I began to worry that even one spoonful might last an entire day.
Then the office chime rang.
“Commander, I have information concerning a suspicious person.”
The reporting knight called through the door when no one answered. We couldn’t ignore that message.
I opened the door because Lionel, wrapped in a towel, could hardly do so himself.
“Comman— My apologies. I see Lord Julius is here.”
I pulled the knight inside and shut the door before explaining that we were conducting a potion test.
He turned and saw Lionel.
“There are two Lord Juliuses!”
“That one is Lionel.”
“Commander?!”
The knight looked between us several times, nearly collapsing.
“I never imagined our ogre-like commander could become so… adorable.”
“What exactly do you mean by that?”
I was surprised to learn that Lionel was called an ogre behind his back. I was even more surprised that the knights apparently considered me adorable.
Perhaps I should stop making stuffed toys before that reputation became permanent.
