Chapter 33: Basic Healing Potion
Since it was unusual for him to be back home while the sun was still high in the sky, Ren headed to the study and picked up the book “Overview of Basic Magic.”
It felt heavy in his hands, and when he opened its wooden cover, he found it difficult to hold steady with just one hand. He set it down on the desk by the window and flipped through the parchment pages. A faint animal-like smell drifted up, accompanied by the sound of stiff pages rubbing together.
A section titled “How to Make a Basic Healing Potion” caught his ey
■ Basic Healing Potion (Low Potion) – Preparation Method
This potion is the most fundamental medicine used to treat cuts and scrapes. It is considered a gateway for beginners to learn both “mana control” as a mage and “ingredient extraction” from herbs.
1. Materials
- Healing Grass (Heal Grass): 3 fresh leaves
- Clean water: 200 ml (low in impurities, easy to channel mana through)
- Mortar and pestle: for grinding the leaves
- Small pot and heat source: something that allows gentle heating
2. Procedure
(1) Preparation
Grind the healing grass in the mortar until it becomes a paste.
(2) Heating
Pour the clean water into a small pot and heat it until just before boiling.
(3) Extraction
Add the ground leaves into the pot and stir slowly clockwise three times.
(4) Mana Infusion
Hold your hand over the pot and slowly let your magic power seep into the liquid.
(5) Finishing
Once the liquid turns a vivid green, remove it from heat, strain it through a clean cloth, and pour it into a bottle.
“Wow… I want to try making this…”
He muttered without thinking, then realized it wasn’t exactly what he had come here for. What he really wanted was to learn more about magic itself and how to use it effectively. Still, the idea of making a healing potion intrigued him.
Clatter.
The door behind him suddenly opened, making Ren jump.
“Ah!”
“Oh my, Ren. What are you doing?”
It was his older sister, Liese. Her soft light-brown hair was tied half-up, and her fair face, paired with slightly narrow pale-green eyes, gave her a cool, composed look.
“Sister Liese…”
She blinked slowly, her long lashes fluttering, then stared intently at the book in Ren’s hands.
“My, Ren. You’re planning to read that book?”
“Huh?”
“That’s a magic book. You don’t need it, do you?”
“…Eh…”
Her words pricked at his chest like thorns. But after a moment, he straightened up and looked directly at her, arms crossed with an annoyed expression.
“Um… I want to see your magic, Sister Liese.”
“What?”
She widened her eyes in surprise.
“I don’t have a magic skill, but I still want to see magic. I mean… magic is amazing, right?”
“…W-What are you even saying…?”
Liese looked flustered and turned her face away. Her ears were slightly red.
“Wind magic isn’t like fire magic—it’s not powerful, and you can’t even see it! Do you really think it’s amazing? Don’t just say things you don’t mean!”
She spat the words out and turned on her heel, leaving the room. Her footsteps faded into the distance.
Ren tilted his head.
“Why did she get mad…? Was it wrong to ask her to show me magic…?”
He thought about his own “Small Box” skill. When he first received it, his father had demanded, “Show me!”—and what appeared was just a faintly glowing little box. He could still remember his father’s disappointment and his mother breaking down in tears. After that, his brothers had also asked him to show it, and he had hated it.
Now, he felt that his “Small Box” had grown a little. Still, the thought of disappointing someone again made him hesitate.
“Maybe Sister Liese doesn’t want to show her skill either… even though it’s such a great one…”
He almost added, “unlike mine,” but stopped himself, pressing his lips together.
Ren actually liked his “Small Box” skill.
He didn’t want to deny it.
