Chapter 40: The Demons Have No Clue

 ◆◆◆

“Any news on the new summoned persons?”

In one of the offices of the Demon Nation’s military, Yaman, a field commander, was questioning a member of the intelligence division.

“No, sir. The summoned persons are being sheltered within the royal castle of Admos. Aside from the earlier report that there seem to be two of them this time, we have not obtained any significant information.”

“I see…”

“However, we have acquired some… trivial information.”

“Trivial information?”

“Yes. Apparently, one of the summoners frequently invites courtesans to the castle.”

“…That is indeed trivial.”

Yaman rubbed his temples in frustration at the intelligence report.

When the news broke that Admos had requested a new summoning through Lindor, tension rippled through the Demon Nation.

After all, the previous summoned person, Kenta, had managed to slay the former demon king, who was regarded as the strongest in history.

Now, another summoned person—or rather, two—had appeared. It was only natural to assume that the humans intended to finally annihilate the Demon Nation.

“In any case, gather whatever information you can, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Even that bit of gossip could lead to some sort of clue.”

“Understood!”

The intelligence agent left Yaman’s office after saluting.

Yaman himself knew his words were partly a façade.

What could possibly be deduced from the fact that one of the summoned person often summoned courtesans?

Other than a possible indication of a strong libido, it revealed nothing.

Nearly a year ago, the Demon Nation had observed an advantageous development—two human nations, Weimar and Admos, were engaged in a war against each other, leading to mutual depletion.

“What on earth are the humans thinking…?”

Due to their relatively small population, demons rarely sought to expand their territory by conquering human nations.

It was always the humans who attacked first.

The late demon king, though the strongest in history, had been an exception. He launched a campaign against the surrounding human nations to put an end to their constant invasions.

Yet, inexplicably, the humans were now fighting amongst themselves instead of invading the Demon Nation.

At the time, Yaman had assumed that humans were simply a species that couldn’t rest unless they were fighting someone. However, the subsequent actions of Admos remained baffling.

“Did they lose the war and now plan to reclaim the lost territory from the Demon Nation?”

Summoned persons were called upon by humans solely to launch invasions against the Demon Nation.

Over fifty years ago, when the last person was last summoned, the humans had also invaded.

Yaman, who hadn’t been born at the time, learned about it through history. However, that summoned person had not been as strong as Kenta and was eventually defeated by the demons.

This was why there were no surviving summoned people from before Kenta.

Yet Kenta’s power was extraordinary.

And now, there were two new summoned persons.

“…Perhaps we should deal with them swiftly.”

Yaman murmured.

Just then, there was a knock on his office door.

“Commander Yaman, are you present?”

“Yes, I’m here.”

“May I enter?”

“Go ahead.”

“Excuse me.”

The person who entered was an aide to the king.

“What is it?”

“His Majesty has summoned you. Could you please make your way to his office immediately?”

“The king?”

Surprised that the king had called for him, Yaman immediately guessed the reason.

Following the aide’s lead, he headed to the king’s office. Upon entering, he was startled to find the room filled with the nation’s most influential leaders.

“I’ve come as summoned.”

Yaman announced, bowing deeply.

Without offering any pleasantries, the king went straight to the point.

“What is the status of the summoned persons?”

“Currently, investigations are ongoing. However, since they are sheltered within the royal castle, we have yet to obtain detailed information.”

Upon hearing this, the king clicked his tongue loudly in frustration.

“Hah, useless. Forget it. If sneaking around isn’t getting us answers, then there’s no point in investigating further. Their target is my head anyway. In that case, it’s better to take them out before they gain strength, like *him*.”

The harsh words from the king made Yaman momentarily bristle, but he had to admit that the king wasn’t wrong.

To be honest, he had been thinking the same thing, so he couldn’t refute the king’s statement.

“Yes, that’s true. While the exact reason for their summoning remains unclear, based on historical precedent, that seems likely.”

“Exactly. See? Even the field commander agrees with me. Not taking action now would just be cowardice.”

The king glanced around the room at the gathered dignitaries as he spoke.

Several of them exchanged glances, then sighed softly and shook their heads, seemingly resigned.

“So, you finally get it. That settles it, doesn’t it?”

With that, the new king made a declaration to the assembled leaders.

“From this moment on, we will declare war on Admos. The objective is…”

The king grinned maliciously as he continued.

“…the elimination of the new summoned persons.”

And so, the war between Admos and the Demon Nation began.
