Chapter 97: Tracking

Although the market streets are crowded, there are fewer people than before the epidemic.

It helped that there were fewer people Since Sophia was able to track Karin’s scent in human form.

Mr. Henry squatted down and then spoke to Sophia-chan.

“Little Sophia, can you smell your grandmother?”

“Yes, Fee-chan, I can!”

“When you can’t smell her anymore, pull on my clothes. I’ll pretend to fix my shoelaces, and you squat down with me and look for the scent.”

“Okay!”

The two of them walked in front and I walked behind them. Henry, who is 190 cm tall, and Sophia, who is about a hundred centimeters tall, are holding hands, and looked a bit like father and daughter.

Sophia-chan walked slowly, looking down. She was sniffing around and heading steadily from Karin-san’s workplace towards the “Hideaway”.

Sophia stopped at the first intersection. When Henry bent down to fix his shoelaces, Sophia also squatted down. She squatted down and sniffed. Then she stood up and turned right. If you’re heading to the “hideout,” you go straight. Henry looked back at me. “It’s getting weird from here,” I said, and Henry nodded.

A little further on, we came across an accessory store for commoners. Sophia stopped in front of the store, and Henry adjusted his shoelaces again. Sophia also crouched down. Then we passed the store. At the next intersection, we turned left into a narrow alley and that’s where we found Karin.

She was lying at the end of a gap between two buildings.

“grandma!”

Henry ran after Sophia. I ran too. Mr. Henry called out to Karin-san.

“Mrs. Karin! Can you hear me?”

Henry touches Karin’s neck and says to me, “She’s alive.” Karin opened her eyes with a whimper in response to his voice. Sophia-chan clings to Karin-san’s body and tries to move it, so Mr. Henry pulls her away and picks her up. Sophia cried loudly, but Henry doesn’t let her go.

“Karin-san, please drink this potion.”

“Miss, Mai.”

Karin grimaced when I moved her head slightly, but she managed to drink the potion.

Henry and I checked the extent of his injuries and.

Henry and I examined the extent of her injuries and found an open wound on the right side of her head that was touching the ground and was bleeding. She had been lying on her side, so we turned her over and found that the right side of her face was severely swollen.

I tried to contact Mr. Victor then realized I had no idea where this place is.

“Henry, do you know this address?”

“Third Street, Silversmith Town. Near Gerdy’s Silversmith Shop.”*

“Got it. Sofia’s crying is very loud, so please move away a little bit. Victor! Mr. Victor! We found Karin. She collapsed in an alley near Gerdy’s Silversmith Shop on Third Street in Silversmith Town.

“Collapsed? Karin, is she okay?”

“She’s conscious, but someone attacked her and injured her. We will call you after we get her to the nearest hospital.”

Not sparing time to reply to Victor’s thanks, I looked around. A single broken chair lay abandoned. I unleashed my transformation magic and made two sturdy bars. I needed cloth to make a stretcher.

“Henry, give me your jacket?”

Mr. Henry gave me his uniform jacket and I used transformation magic on it. A number of strips of cloth were passed between two sticks to complete an improvised stretcher. Mr. Henry picked up Mrs. Karin and gently placed her on the stretcher, and together we lifted the stretcher.

“Sophia, follow me. We’re going to take Grandma to the doctor.”

“Okay.”

Sophia-chan, who had been crying loudly, followed me, sobbing softly.

“The nearest doctor is this way. Mai, hold the gurney tightly.”

“Got it! Sophia, I’m going with Grandma. It’s okay if you cry, just follow me, okay?” .

 Sophia nodded silently.

Once on the main street, several men came running up to us and asked, “is someone hurt? Let me help you.” “Miss, let me take your place! The doctor is over here!” They called out to us. We arrived at a small doctor’s office about ten minutes’ walk away.

There were seven or eight patients in the waiting room, but when they saw Karin’s terrible condition, they all gave up their turn. Karin was taken to the examination room, and Henry accompanied her to explain the situation. Sophia-chan remained silent as she held my hand. I pretended to go to the bathroom, contacted Mr. Victor, and waited.

After a short wait, the door to the examination room opened. I went in and received an explanation.

“her injuries include a laceration to the head, two broken ribs, bruises to the face, and a sprained right ankle. They are not life-threatening, but she will need to stay in the hospital overnight.”

“I understand. Thank you very much.”

“She’s calmed down a lot now, so you can see her now.”

Once inside the hospital room, Karin-san opened her eyes.

“Thank you for helping me. I tried to go easy on him, but I screwed up,” she said, describing the situation in which she was attacked.*

“I bought a silver brooch for Victor, and when I left the store, he snatched my entire bag. I chased after him, but four of his friends were waiting for me. Then the five of them started punching and kicking me…”

Five men? And they targeted one woman? I have a bad feeling about this.

“Karin!” Victor entered the hospital room with a stifled voice.

“Karin’s not in critical condition, but she needs to stay here ‘cause of the broken bones and bruises.”

“Broken bones ……. Mai, Henry, thank you for helping my wife. Thank you so much.”

Then he pauses for a moment before telling us with a look of frustration on his face.

“If she had transformed, five ordinary guys would’ve been nothing to her. But if she fights back in dog form, beastmen will get a bad reputation. I’m sure that’s what she was worried about…”

“Karin-san was protecting the honor of the beastmen by staying in her human form?”

Victor nodded silently to Henry’s words and looked at Karin. His face looked so sad that it was hard to watch. I’ll definitely find those scum and turn them over to the security guards. Absolutely.

“We’re going home now, but if you need anything else, please call us. We’ll take Sophia with us.”

“Thank you very much. I will stay here with her.”

I left the clinic without Victor, who thanked me again. Sophia-chan was silent, walking with her hand being pulled. Now is the time to make her do what she knows how to best.

“Sophia, I want you to find the scent of those people who hurt  grandmother. I’ll take down those who hurt her.”

“I’ll find them, Fee-chan.”

“Let me help you. Come on, let’s get started before the scent starts to fade.”

The three of us went back to where Karin had collapsed. Henry and I blocked the view from the street and asked Sophia-chan to transform herself. Sophia-chan instantly transformed into a dog and put her nose close to the ground to sniff it.

 Fee-chan, I remember the smell!”

Thank you. You can turn back into a human now. Come on, let’s go. Follow the scent.

“Feee-chan, let’s get them!”

Thus, we began searching for the robbers, with Henry leading and Sophia-chan and me following behind him. The enemy was moving straight ahead without making any detours. We arrived at a bar.

Sophia looked up at Henry and said firmly, “Right here!”

With a ward up in place, I entered the bar and immediately recognized the culprits I was looking for. I’d bet the five slackly-postured guys in the standing bar were the ones who’d tried to attack me that night.

The bartender and the five were the only people in the bar. This place is open even though the disease control law is in effect. Or are they being forced to stay open?

“Who are you guys?”

Henry quickly picked up Sophia, who was now in the air glaring at the men and screaming excitedly, “Hoo! Whoo!” and excited.”

”I’ll take care of this,” I told Henry, and he nodded with a grim look on his face but stepped back.

“Hey! This is a bar. Don’t bring the kid here.”

 This voice is unmistakable.

It was the voice of the leader who had asked me to lend him money that night. Once I was certain of this, for some reason I felt calmer.

“A friend of mine was mugged near here. You guys were the ones who attacked her, weren’t you?”

“Huh? Stop bullshitting. We’ve been drinking here the whole time. Stop making false accusations.”

“You’re the one who’s talking nonsense. Did you forget about the snake, the wolf, and the crocodile? You ran away screaming and naked.”

All five of them were aghast. Yes, a definite extra charge.

“Transform!”

I was so excited that I blurted it out loud. Everyone’s clothes stuck to their bodies like elastic bandages. From their ankles to their necks, they looked like mummies wrapped in cloth-patterned bandages.

The men lost their balance and bam!  they fell down with a thud!.

“You’re a wizard!”

“You finally realized? Hey, if it was just a snatch, there was no need to hurt her like that, no?”

“But she kept chasing after me! All for a piece of cheap silver!”

“She could have died if we hadn’t found her, leaving her in the alley like that.”

 I contacted Victor right away.

“We caught the culprits who attacked Karin. This place is…”

I looked at Mr. Henry and he immediately put his face close to my ears and gave me the address.

“It’s on Okeyacho 2nd Street, the sixth bar without a sign as you head towards the back of the street.”

Victor replied, “I heard you. I’ll be right there,” and ended the call. I kept an eye on the men who were fussing, and soon Mr. Viktor came into the store, clad in a murderous vibe.

“So it’s these guys?”

“Yes. I’m sure they have many other crimes. I was attacked once on the street at night. They tried to get their hands on me as well as my money, so I fought back and drove them away.”

Victor slowly looked around the five men.

“I see, I see. …… The owner, I take it you’re operating illegally?”

“Th, that! If you go against these people, then ……”

“I’ll hear your excuses later. If you don’t want your crimes to become any more serious, run to the Guard ASAP. Tell them, ‘Commander Victor’s wife has been beaten half to death. We’ve caught the culprit, so please come.’”

“al-alright!”

The bartender ran out and Victor spoke to me in an oddly quiet voice.

“I have some questions I want to ask these guys, so could you please take Sophia home?”

“I understand. Sophia, come home with me.”

“Fee-chan, bite!”

“Those guys? No, Sophia, you’ll get your mouth dirty. They’re trash.”

“That’s right. Let’s go home together. Let Grandpa take care of them.”

Henry left the store holding hands with a disgruntled Sophia. After a short walk, he looked back at me.

“All you did was restrain them. I would have …”*

Henry swallowed his words halfway through, and looked at Sophia. He noticed that she was listening intently and changed the subject.

They were laughing and drinking right after what they did to Mrs. Karin, weren’t they? They are probably habitual robbery offenders. If so, they can’t be allowed to come back into  society. They’ll be sentenced to life in prison and sent to hard labor. Anyway, Mai. When were you attacked by those guys? This is the first time I’m hearing of it.”

That’s right. I got so excited that I blurted it out in front of Henry.

“Ah, yes. Nothing happened to me, and I didn’t want to worry you, so I didn’t tell you. I thought it would be a hassle to explain how I got rid of them, so I just chased them away and didn’t turn them in to the security forces. But if I had turned them in then, Karin wouldn’t have gotten hurt like she did. What happened today could have been prevented.”

“those guys are the ones at fault. There is no need for you to feel responsible.”

Henry gave me a lot of comfort after that,, but it is true that I am partly to blame.
