Chapter 13: Committee Decisions

I returned to the Class C classroom with His Highness Grayson and sat down in my seat, attracting many stares.

Perhaps my classmates, who overheard what His Highness Grayson and I were saying, had already spread the word, and the topic of mana concentration was flying around everywhere.

"How fast news travels," I thought slightly impressed. ────  then a green-haired man appeared in the classroom with the chime of the bell.

With his black leather gloves and glasses, he stood atop the podium, his short turquoise hair swinging in the air. His emerald eyes, seen through the lenses, were beautiful, and his neutral face was beautiful. He was a different kind of beauty from His Highness Grayson ──── our class teacher, Mr. Silas Eldo Russell.

He's a herbologist and a genius who's developed a recovery potion.

It seems that it has not yet reached the stage of practical use, but since recovery methods that don't require healing magic are rare, he was awarded a doctorate and made a baron by the Emperor.

Obviously, his subject is herbology.

He’s only in his twenties, but he’s amazing.

He's from a Count family, so it seems he was blessed with a good environment, but it's still amazing that he can get results at such a young age...

"This afternoon's class will be a committee meeting, as I told you beforehand. ──── But I'm busy compiling research data, so I'll go back to the lab as soon as the class president is decided. I won't accept any objections, I look forward to working with you. "

Silas sensei, with his brash and self-serving manner, hasn't changed at all since he first entered the school. He does his classes and performs his role as a homeroom teacher at the very least…but he's too selfish.

He shouldn't abandon his assigned classes in the middle of the day, even if it was just to decide on a committee.

I know you're busy with your research, but what does this say about you as a teacher? Even I'm not that much of a bother.

"Then, we're going to decide on a class president right away. Will the candidates raise their hands?"

Narrowing his emerald eyes that could be seen through the lenses and smiling, Silas sensei looked around the classroom.

The decision of the class president began without any explanation of the position, while the students show their confusion, ──── one student raises her hand. I followed the thin, outstretched arm and lowered my gaze slightly to see a girl with a ponytail.

With her strong-willed eyes, she is the daughter of the Duke of Dursley… a person who deserves to be the representative of the class. Emilia sama would be perfect in terms of both family background and ability.

"Well, you're the daughter of the Duke of Dursley I believe… Anyway, would you mind coming up front?"

"Yes, I understand."

Nodding her head in response to Silas sensei's words, Emilia sama got up from her seat and headed for the blackboard as prompted.

The word "dignified" suited her more than "beautiful" as she stood confidently beside the teacher's podium.

"Is there anyone else who wants to run? If not, the Duchess of Dursley… uh, what's your name?"

"Emilia, sir."

"Yes, that's it! If there are no other candidates, then Emilia san will be the class president. Are you okay with that?"

Silas sensei who had completely forgotten the name of Emilia-sama, the Duchess of Dursley, asked us without a care in the world. I think he's a very insensitive teacher… And Emilia sama didn’t seem upset about it, is she an angel or something?

Aside from a weak aristocrat like me, you shouldn’t forget the name of a Duchess… especially one who is the top student in the entrance exam... Well, it's just like Silas sensei I guess… he even mispronounced students' names several times during the orientation after the entrance ceremony.

But strangely enough, he can remember all the names of herbs and their benefits.

I guess that's different because "love is the key to success," as they say, I'm sure he only learns what he's interested in.

"We think Emilia-sama is the most qualified person to be the class president," my classmates said in response to the teacher's words and actions, which could be considered disrespectful.

The beautiful turquoise-haired man nodded in satisfaction when he was sure that there were no opponents.

"Then Eleanor san will be the class president."

"It's Emilia, sir."

"Hahaha! I'm sorry, I forgot again!"

Emilia sama shook her head, saying 'it’s fine.' to Silas sensei who apologized in an entirely inappropriate way.

I was impressed by Emilia-sama's generosity, and I was dismayed by Silas-sensei, who while was brilliant was an airhead.

By now, more than half the class must have branded him as a "disappointing adult."

Maybe Silas sensei's memory is worse than a chicken's... I wonder if he really is a Ph.D. researcher.

"Now that we have a class president, I'll leave you to her. My research is waiting for me! You’re in charge, Miss Emily."

"I'm Emilia, sir."

"Haha! Yes, of course! Well, I'll leave you to it!"

Silas sensei, who had mispronounced Emilia sama's name until the very end, waved his hand and left the classroom.

She listened to the sound of the teacher's footsteps gradually receding into the distance and sighed, "Hah ..." While the students said, "He's really gone, isn't he? " Emilia-sama, who had been put almost entirely in charge of the committee's decisions, coughed once. The students of class C reacted to the deliberate coughing and shut their mouths immediately.

"Since Silas sensei has left for the lab, I will be the moderator from here on out. Many things haven't been done yet, but I look forward to working with you. Let's start with the rest of the class representatives. ──── "

Emilia sama, with her clear voice, gave instructions and talks smoothly, I can only say "as expected". Not because she was a duchess, but because she possessed great leadership qualities and was completely suited to stand above others.

As the members of the committees were steadily being decided thanks to the smooth progress, my eyes were glued to the words "Library Committee" written on the blackboard.

The work hours are a little longer than other committees because they have to check out and manage books, but the work is relatively easy.

It's the only committee that even I can be bothered to join!

As long as I do my job well, I can study and read! So I have to be on the library committee no matter what!

I secretly made up my mind to be a member of the library committee; the only positions that haven't yet been decided are the Library Committee and the Disciplinary Committee. The time for the decisive battle was about to begin.

"Now… If you want to be on the library committee, please raise your hand."

I immediately raised my hand as Emilia sama said that. But it seems that I wasn't the only one who wanted to be on the library committee, there were two other candidates. Well what's going to happen is... If I don't become a member of the library committee, I'll automatically be on the disciplinary committee. No one would want to join the dangerous and unpopular disciplinary committee.

The disciplinary committee at Frügel Academy is a little bit special, and they're the only ones allowed to carry weapons and use attack magic on campus.

Of course, they're not allowed to unleash their weapons and magic everywhere, but they use them to stop fights among students and eliminate outside enemies.

As you can tell from the job description, being a member of the disciplinary committee involves a lot of danger, sometimes resulting in injury.

In addition, they have a bad reputation among the students.

This is because they interfere with the problems between students.

If it's just a quarrel, you can leave it alone, but if it's a brawl, you have no choice but to use force… As a result, it was easy to be hated and criticized for being barbaric and overkill.

That's why no one wants to be a member of the disciplinary committee unless they're real fanatics. There's no need to go out of your way to be hated.

"There are three candidates for the library committee…There is a limit of two candidates, so one of you has to join the disciplinary committee. We'll have to draw lots to be fair. Also, ──── His Highness Grayson is not currently a member of any committee; will you be okay with being on the disciplinary committee?"

With that, the ponytailed girl turned her gaze to the beautiful black-haired young man sitting in a seat near the hallway. When his name was called, the third prince of the Kingdom of Soleil slowly raised his head and nodded quietly.

"Yeah, that's fine."

"Eh? Are you sure ...?"

"Mm. The disciplinary committee is allowed to wear a sword on campus, right?"

"Um, yeah… that's true, but…"

"Then so be it. I don't care as long as I can keep my sword at hand."

Emilia sama was baffled by His Highness Grayson's reason to join the disciplinary committee simply because he was "allowed to wear a sword on campus". But in the end, she was convinced,

"If that's what you want."

Thus, before the battle for the library committee could be fought, a slot on the disciplinary committee was filled. Not that I mind, but is His Highness really okay with that? I'm not worried about him getting hurt, but I can't believe he'd take on the hated role himself… I knew he was a strange one.

"I'd like to start the lottery for the library committee now that one of the slots for the disciplinary committee has been filled. To save time, I'll draw the lots, but please be assured that I'm not cheating in any way. As you all know, it was the Vice-Chairman who prepared this lottery."

The vice-chairman, who was diligently preparing the lottery in the corner of the classroom, nodded as he held the three folded pieces of paper. Since all of my classmates had witnessed this, there was no particular objection. After placing the three folded pieces of paper on the table, the vice-chairman quickly stepped back.

"Each of these three pieces of paper has the name of a candidate on it. I will now draw one of them, and the person whose name is written on it will join the disciplinary committee. As I've said many times, I'm not cheating in any way, so please don't complain no matter what the result is."

After a brief explanation of the lottery, Emilia sama looked down and reached for a piece of paper on the table. I gulped as she drew lots that would determine my future life at school.

"I hope it's not me, please! I hope it's not me!" As I wished strongly, Emilia sama picked up one of the folded papers. She opened it with a rustling sound.

"The person who will be transferring from the library committee to the disciplinary committee will be────."

As the well-reverberated soprano voice echoed through the room, the one chosen by the goddess of fate was…

"────  Viscountess Charlotte Luna Meyers."

The name that was mercilessly readout was mine.

...... I hung my head in disbelief. As my name reverberated in my brain, I struggled to hold back the urge to shout, "No way!" I'm not sure if the goddess of fate loves me or hates me…

Let's just say it's not such a bad thing that I didn't get to be on the library committee…

But! It's bad luck to be elected to the disciplinary committee.

Why, of all people, should I be chosen to be a hated member of the disciplinary committee...? No, that's really rude to say. But I don't want my reputation to be ruined any more than it already is… I was not in the slightest bit worried about getting hurt.

I managed to stifle the sigh that was threatening to come out of me. When I looked up, I saw His Highness Grayson sitting in the hallway seat…

"Well, it's better to work with someone you know," I reminded myself. I bowed my head in a small, begrudging manner, and then looked ahead again.

"This concludes the committee decisions. Thank you for your cooperation. The first meeting of each committee will be after school tomorrow, so please keep that in mind. With that ──── you are all dismissed."

Emilia sama, who acted as a fine moderator on behalf of Silas sensei, announced the end of the class. With that as a signal, the classroom became buzzing and noisy as usual.
