Chapter 73 – Tribute to Matilda-san 4: “Oh, really?”
“The crackers you gave me were very delicious. Everyone took some, and they were gone in no time.”
Matilda-san said with a chuckle. Her complexion was much better now compared to this morning.
“I’m glad to hear that.”
“They were really tasty and made me feel better. It was better than any nutritional supplement.”
Matilda-san praised mischievously.
She really has regained her vitality, and her smile was back to its usual beauty. Seeing that smile made me feel better too. Yes, Matilda-san should always be like this.
If she liked them that much, I’ll bring more next time. Maybe raisin sandwich cookies would be nice? They use eggs, but just a small amount so it should be fine. But maybe it would be better to make the black sesame crackers again, as she liked them so much.
When it comes to gifts or souvenirs, you always feel tempted to try something flashy or new. But sometimes it’s better to stick to the usual classics.
There are those classic gifts that make you happy no matter how many times you get them, right? Like Fukuoka’s street snacks, Moon from Miyagi Prefecture, Red from Mie Prefecture—they’re all staples, but still so exciting to receive!
Also, in Kyoto, while Bridge is nice, I recommend the mochi named after that famous monk.
After that, I ended up going home without witnessing the outcome.
I mean, it’s probably going to be a big mess. There’s going to be a lot of screaming and yelling…
I had Matilda-san inspect the antennae from the defeated creature that I brought back, then checked the reward.
It was a pain to even collect the parts, so the reward was pretty disappointing. But I didn’t have the energy to gather all those antennae and bring them back anyway, so oh well.
“Thank you for taking down the Amame.”
Matilda-san bowed slightly as she said it, her voice containing more emotion than usual.
They must’ve been really struggling with this issue. Also, just inspecting the monster remains could be mentally scarring for some…
Matilda-san, I think the Amame will decrease now, so please try to get proper rest.
The next day, I went into the forest to retrieve the remains of the fumigating insecticide, Balfour.
I couldn’t just leave it there—it’d be considered illegal dumping.
Kirara’s barrier had likely worn off by now due to time passing.
This time too, I had Kirara come along, while Mimi stayed behind just in case.
“Why can’t I come?”
She asked. But, you know, I hear it all the time…
Stories like how spraying mosquito or cockroach killer in the next room made a guppy float to the surface, or how it ends tragically for lizards or leopard geckos. Sad tales that show how hard it is to prevent these things, even when you’re careful yourself.
So just to be on the safe side, I asked her to stay behind. Though I figured Kirara’s barrier would be enough.
The density of Gs in the forest was clearly down. Actually, I barely saw any.
We quickly reached the hole, and I looked to Kirara,
“Mm. The dungeon is gone!”
So I think this solved the problem. That’s good.
What was inside the hole… is something I don’t want to talk about. it’s a memory I’d rather forget.
Well, how should I put it, that,
There’s no way I could collect all of those antennas. It would be too much of an ordeal…
“Kirara, um… is there a chance that there are still eggs left and they might multiply again?”
Should I leave out some boric acid balls?
“Amame multiply by dividing, or rather by giving birth to offspring that look just like their parents.”
“Really?!”
I was shocked. I thought they were like Gs (cockroaches), but they’re more like aphids that attach themselves to soft parts of plants?
Aphids reproduce asexually, and are even born while already carrying their own babies inside. Just one aphid can become 10,000 in a month. Sometimes even more. Terrifying. They’re a formidable foe that you can’t avoid fighting if you’re a gardener.
Well, aphids are sometimes even called “plant roaches.”
I had Kirara cover up the creepy hole tightly with vines.
There was no hole here!
I saw nothing!
Let’s go with that.
That’s for the best. Yep.
Later, I heard a rumor that a Lesser Dragon appeared deep in the forest. Apparently, it was very weak and sluggish for some reason. I heard that it was defeated by a cat beastman adventurer who happened to be in the forest on a different quest.
The forest depths are apparently quite the magical hotspot.
Even so, a dragon—even a Lesser one—showing up caused a big stir.
And, strangely enough, the abnormal surge of Amame also stopped around the same time. Scholars are now busy testing the theory that there might be a connection between the Lesser Dragon and the Amame’s ecosystem.
Oh, really?
Could that creepy hole have been connected to another cave or something?
Seriously, I’m so glad I didn’t bring Mimi along with me!
Insecticide isn’t just dangerous to bugs—it’s extremely hazardous to fish and reptiles too…
As usual, I came by to look for a new request and brought another tribute for Matilda-san.
After baking it a few times, I’ve gotten used to handling the flour here.
When Matilda-san saw the container with the usual black sesame crackers and raisin sandwich cookies, her eyes lit up.
I knew it was a bit of a waste of money, but I couldn’t resist decorating them, so I ended up buying a stamp. I used it to decorate the tag. I still resisted the urge to buy ribbon or yarn though.
Looks like she’s finally getting enough sleep. She looks so energetic. I’m glad.
“If it’s alright, may I ask where you buy these?”
Matilda-san asked, saying she felt bad always receiving them and wanted to buy them herself. That put me in a bit of a bind.
It’s kind of awkward to say I made them myself at this point.
“It’s a limited bake from a bakery I know, so it might be hard to find at first glance…”
“I see… They’re really delicious. Ever since I started eating them, I’ve been feeling better for some reason…”
She said, looking a little disappointed.
Matilda looks as though she’s sorry and wants to pay for it, but I tell her not to worry too much, as I’ll only bring it when I can get them.
Maybe her poor condition wasn’t just from lack of sleep?
Was it anemia?
Black sesame and raisins are both good for anemia, after all.
Well, either way, I’m glad she’s feeling better!
The black sesame crackers were also a big hit with Luuna.
We promised to bake them together next time.
I’m really looking forward to it.
