Chapter 6. Registration at the Adventurers’ Guild

“Saki, let’s go?”

The gatekeeper, who had finished the conversation, urged me on.

“Thank you. Umm…”

Is it okay to ask for his name?

“Ah, I’m Byrne. Follow me.”

“Byrne-san, what is the Adventurers’ Guild?”

“Just call me Byrne. Ah, it’s basically a place where you register if you don’t have identification. Even though it’s called the Adventurers’ Guild, it’s closer to a job placement agency. Many people leave after registering with the commerce guild or alchemy guild.”

From what I gather, the Adventurers’ Guild is a government-run organization where anyone who isn’t a member of any other guild can join. It can be used as a basic form of identification. They introduce various kinds of jobs, including monster extermination and other adventurer tasks.

I think it’s something like the insurance card system. If you leave your company’s insurance, you join the national health insurance, so you always have some kind of insurance.

To enter a proper town, you need identification, but in mountain villages, it’s not necessary. Since some villagers grow up without IDs, it’s sometimes necessary to help with the registration procedures.

It’s rare, but if you can’t register at the Adventurers’ Guild, you have to be kept outside the gate, so they needed to check until you could register.

That road leads to a mountain village and apparently, there’s not much foot traffic there. No wonder I didn’t sense anyone passing by even when I tried to look.

While listening, we arrived at the guild.

Byrne-san pointed to the signboard.

It had a very clear emblem on it: a shield with crossed swords.

I follow Mr. Byrne through the door and head toward one of several reception desks.

“Welcome, Byrne-san,” said a calm-looking woman working at the reception.

She had her hair tied back in a neat bun, with a single strand hanging down, which swayed as she bowed.

“Please explain and register Saki here. She has ID, but it’s unreadable.”

After being introduced, I approached the reception desk, the woman gestured with her eyes, so I sat down in the chair.

“Understood. I am Mathilda, and I will be in charge today. This is the Adventurers’ Guild. We issue adventurer cards to registered members and help find jobs.”

I listened to Mathilda’s explanation.

From what I hear, it’s similar to Hello Work (Japan’s employment service), just as Byrne-san described.

The jobs they Introduce are not only adventuring work or long-term employment but also day jobs and odd jobs, handyman-type work.

There’s no fee to register.

The types of jobs and fee structures vary depending on rank.

Penalties for failed requests.

They buy and sell materials gathered or from monster hunts.

There are discount systems at affiliated inns and equipment stores.

She explained many other things to me, but as her explanation flowed smoothly, I could only absorb part of it…

“That’s all for now. May I have your ID to register?”

Mathilda-san smiled kindly as I handed over my driver’s license.

It was scanned by a crystal device, and a screen appeared.

Honestly, I find it so strange how it can read it. When I touched the screen, it glowed softly.

“This is certainly your card. We have your registration info, but it’s unreadable. It seems we can’t add information to this card. Would you like us to create a new adventurer card and transfer this information into the notes section?”

“I’d like that, please.”

I don’t really understand, but I’ll go with it!

Filling out the necessary details on the documents I received, I was told I could have someone write it for me, but I could also write slowly and listen at the same time.

There is a section to write down the magic spells you can use. What should I do here?

When I asked, I was told that it’s okay to leave everything blank except for my name, which made me wonder—was that okay?

But apparently, the purpose of registration is to record a person’s magical signature for personal identification and to check for any criminal history using that magic pattern.

Come to think of it, insurance cards and driver’s licenses only have the reference number, name, address, and date of birth written on them.

Many adventurers probably don’t have a fixed address, and some might not know their date of birth. That makes sense now.

After filling out the paperwork, I handed them to Mathilda-san and waited for the card to be made.

When the card was ready, I place my finger on the sparkly part that looks just like an IC chip at the bottom right corner of the finished card, concentrating my magic.

Register my magic power—

The card softly glowed, and I looked at Mathilda-san to see if this was okay, and she nodded, so I handed her the card.

She scanned the card with the crystal device and touched the screen that opened.

Along with the glow, information written in my language appeared. The Japanese driver’s license info was also displayed as-is at the bottom.

“Okay. No criminal record detected. I will proceed with the registration now.”

It seems I was successfully registered. I felt a sense of relief.

“Alright! Registration is complete. I’ve confirmed everything, so my work here is done.”

“Thank you, Byrne.”

That was very helpful.

“I’m usually at the gate. If anything comes up, come and talk to me.”

Byrne-san said as he waved his hand and left.

Once I have some breathing room, I thought I’d go thank him properly.

After seeing Byrne-san off, I turned back to Mathilda-san.

“Can I ask about what kinds of jobs there are?”

Are there any day  jobs I can do even though I’ve just registered?
