Commemorative Short Story ②: Shopping with Primula
It happened not long after Rest had been taken in by the Rosemary Marquis family.
Rest was accompanying Primula on a shopping trip to the royal capital’s marketplace.
“Thank you for coming along with me today, Rest-sama.”
“I don’t mind. It’s just a shopping trip, after all.”
Today, it was just the two of them.
Normally, the Rosemary sisters acted together, but of course, there were times when they went out separately.
Today’s errand was to buy embroidery thread, one of Primula’s hobbies.
Although servants usually bought daily necessities or had them delivered to the mansion, Primula preferred to choose her hobby materials with her own eyes—so she’d come out to the city herself.
“Embroidery. I often do it when I have free time, but my sister Viola doesn’t like it very much.”
“Ah, so you two have different tastes in hobbies.”
“Yes. I enjoy reading and embroidery, while my sister prefers horseback riding and billiards. We both enjoy card games and chess, though.”
Viola had a lively personality, whereas Primula was quiet and gentle. Naturally, their hobbies reflected that difference.
Their faces were nearly identical, yet their temperaments made them seem like completely different people—an odd but fascinating thing.
“There’s a new shop that opened over here. I’ve really wanted to visit it.”
Primula led the way through the streets.
Today, she wore a simpler dress than usual, with fewer adornments.
To onlookers, she looked like the daughter of a well-off family—not quite like the daughter of a marquis.
“This is it, Rest-sama.”
She sounded genuinely excited.
Her cheerful voice and the spring in her step made her look absolutely adorable.
(Honestly, I still can’t believe it… Why would such a wonderful girl have feelings for someone like me?)
Following after her, Rest pondered this quietly.
He had already noticed—both Primula and her older sister Viola seemed to harbor feelings for him.
Perhaps it was because he had once saved their lives. Still, to be liked so deeply for something like that felt undeserved.
(Then at the very least, I should try to become someone worthy of them…)
“Hey, girlie, you’re cute.”
“Why don’t you come hang out with us for a bit?”
While he was lost in thought, Primula who had been walking a little ahead was suddenly approached by two rough-looking men.
“U-Um… what is it?”
“Ah, Primula. Don’t stray too far. She’s with me—do you need something from her?”
“Hah? Who’s this scrawny guy?”
Rest stepped protectively in front of Primula, but the men didn’t back down.
“Tch! Back off if you don’t want to get hurt!”
“Leave the girl and—Guhah!”
“Wind Sphere.”
Before the thugs could finish their threat, Rest swiftly cast a spell.
Balls of compressed air struck both men squarely in the gut, knocking them to the ground where they writhed in pain.
“G…gah… what the hell…”
“Let’s go, Primula.”
“Ah…”
Taking advantage of their confusion, Rest gently took Primula’s hand and led her away.
Her cheeks flushed pink as she shyly squeezed his hand in return.
Together, they walked into the elegant little shop she’d been so excited to see.
“Wow… amazing! There are so many different kinds of thread!”
“Yeah… there really are a lot.”
“The textures are all different too! Imagine how fun it’ll be to embroider with these!”
“…Yeah, I can see that.”
Primula’s eyes sparkled as she looked over the displays.
Rest, however, didn’t really get it—he could tell colors apart, sure, but that was about it.
(Well, as long as she’s happy, that’s what matters…)
“This one, and that one… oh, but they’re all so lovely, I can’t decide!”
Normally, Primula wasn’t one to assert herself, but when it came to her interests, she showed surprising passion.
She picked up bundles of thread, inspecting them one by one with great care.
“How about this colour? It’s cute.”
“It is… but it might be too bright for a man.”
“A man?”
“These are for the embroidery I’ll be putting on a handkerchief for you, Rest-sama.”
She smiled as she said it.
“I think blue or green would suit you best. What do you think?”
“Ah… yeah. I like both.”
Her words caught Rest completely off guard.
(A gift from a girl… this might be the first time, other than from my mother.)
And it wasn’t just any gift—it was a handkerchief she’d embroider herself.
That made it feel even more meaningful.
(It’s kind of like a handmade present… right?)
“I’ll go pay for these, then.”
“Alright… I’ll wait outside, take your time.”
“Eh? I’m sorry, what do you mean?”
Tilting her head in confusion at Rest’s cryptic words, Primula carried her chosen items over to the counter to pay.
“Well then…”
That aside—Rest still had something he needed to take care of.
When he stepped outside the shop, he found a group of rough-looking men waiting for him—at least a dozen of them.
“So, you’re the bastard from before!”
“You’re gonna regret making fools out of us!”
“A revenge attack, huh… Honestly, you thugs are all the same.”
“What was that!? You’ve got some nerve—”
“High Acceleration – Overdrive!”
Cutting off their shouting mid-sentence, Rest decided to finish this quickly.
He activated an advanced spell, boosting his speed to the extreme, and launched himself forward.
“Ha!”
“Gah!” “Guuh!” “Gk—!” “Guhh!” “Gwohh!”
In an instant, fists and kicks flew at blinding speed—striking, sweeping, and knocking them down one after another.
It took less than five seconds for Rest to take out every single one of the dozen men.
They collapsed to the ground groaning, while nearby pedestrians panicked and ran off to call the military police.
“Consider yourselves lucky… If Primula had been caught up in this, it wouldn’t have ended this gently.”
If they had so much as touched her—no, even laid a single finger on her—it wouldn’t have stopped at a beating.
To harm the daughter of a marquis… in the worst case, execution would not have been out of the question.
Just as Rest finished dealing with the thugs, Primula came out of the store.
“Rest-sama, is something wrong?”
“No, nothing at all… Shall we go home?”
“…Yes.”
Rest offered his hand, and Primula, blushing faintly, placed hers atop his.
With the unconscious thugs lying all around them, the two of them walked away hand in hand.
