Chapter 355: The Catreya Brothers’ Oath

The mock battle was over.
Rest had emerged victorious.

As cheers erupted around him, Rest exhaled deeply and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

“Whew… that was close…”

Toya Catreya had been a formidable opponent.
Had Rest fought him from afar with powerful magic, it might have been an easy win —
but in close combat, Toya was no pushover.
In the chaos of a real battle, where friend and foe mixed, Rest might even have lost.

“Impressive… I didn’t think you’d actually defeat Toya.”

“Indeed. Even if Toya is the weakest among us brothers, for a sixteen-year-old boy to beat him is… unexpected.”

A sharp, commanding presence approached from behind.
Turning around, Rest saw Toya’s two older brothers — Valeya Catreya and Carlius Catreya — standing over him.

“…Sorry, brother.”

Toya knelt on the ground, bowing his head in frustration.
Valeya glanced down at him, then suddenly raised his right hand high.

“—!”

“Splendid, Count Clover! Well done in besting my brother!”

Rest flinched, thinking a blow was coming — but instead, Valeya clapped him firmly on the shoulder in praise.

“So the Marquis Rosemary truly did choose well in recognizing you as his daughters’ fiancé!
That a youth in his teens could fight so skillfully in close quarters — remarkable! Truly admirable!”

“To have such a talented mage fighting alongside us is reassuring indeed. We shall rely on you in the coming battles.”

Both Valeya and Carlius offered words of respect.
Feeling the tension melt away, Rest relaxed and smiled nervously.

“Th-thank you… it’s an honor.”

“It was quite the fierce match. You must be exhausted — take some rest.”

“Your room has already been prepared. We’ll have someone guide you there.”

Rest had half-expected he’d be forced to fight the two elder brothers next, but to his relief, the situation ended peacefully.

“Now then! Everyone, take Count Clover’s example — give it your all!”

Valeya called out to the troops, rallying them as he praised Rest.
With that, Rest followed a soldier away from the training grounds.

“So that’s him… Count Rest Clover, the man who slew the Monstrous beast Sabnock.”

After Rest had left, while the other knights sparred around them, the Catreya brothers spoke quietly among themselves.

“A mage capable of holding his own against us — not someone to be underestimated.”

“If nothing else, it’s reassuring. It means our beloved sister’s judgment wasn’t mistaken.”

Valeya crossed his arms with a low hum as Carlius spoke.

The Catreya Family had four brothers — and all of them were hopelessly devoted to their younger sister, Yuri.
This duel had proven that the man Yuri had chosen wasn’t just a smooth-tongued flirt —
he had genuine strength and integrity.

That fact made them proud… and yet, at the same time, deeply disappointed.

“Damn it… If I’d won, I could’ve said, ‘A weakling like that isn’t worthy of our Princess Yuri!’ and stopped this whole thing…”

Toya clenched his teeth in frustration.
That was the true reason for their bitterness.

They adored their sister — completely, unconditionally.
She was their late mother’s only daughter, the lone girl among five siblings — their angel, their princess, their butterfly, their flower.
They had wanted her to stay in their care, sheltered and safe, just a few more years.

But the pampered princess had chosen to leave home of her own will —
and not just that, she’d moved in with a man.

When the brothers found out, they had nearly abandoned their duties and plotted a literal raid to retrieve her.
If the house she stayed in hadn’t been affiliated with Marquis Rosemary’s family, it might have escalated into an actual war.

“Since Father has already given his blessing to our angel’s marriage, we can’t take her back by force… not without just cause. That’s why we wanted a legitimate reason to oppose it.”

“Sorry…”

“There’s no need to keep apologizing. It only proves our dear sister has a good eye for men.
For now, let’s watch and see.”

The three exchanged glances and sighed heavily.
They resented Rest — but as men of honor, they wouldn’t stoop to backstabbing him in the chaos of battle.
Even if, deep down, they kind of wanted to.

“Still… if he shows weakness in this war, even if Father forbids it — we’ll take Yuri back ourselves!”

“Of course. We must protect our princess!”

“Next time, I won’t lose. Count on it!”

The brothers clasped hands, swearing their vow.

If Rest ever showed himself unworthy of Yuri, they would bare their fangs without hesitation.

For now, he had passed the first trial of the brothers — but the Catreya siblings’ tests for their future brother-in-law were far from over.

In fact… the real challenge was only just beginning.
