Chapter 346: Giant Buffalo Hunting
A brief respite during the march.
Together with Isis, Rest set out to hunt a herd of monsters near the highway—Giant Buffalo.
As the name suggested, they were enormous buffalo.
A short distance away, buffalo the size of elephants were leisurely munching on grass.

Even if a herd of Giant Buffalo stripped the land bare, the grass would regrow in just a few days.
(They’re monsters that are hunted for food. Too large to be domesticated, but their meat was delicious.)
Rest didn’t consider it a chore.
If anything, it was a welcome distraction from the stifling air of war.
“The Giant Buffalo’s strength is, as you see, its massive body. Plenty of adventurers have been crushed trying to hunt them. Stay cautious.”
“Of course, Isis.”
Rest nodded at her warning.
He had fought Giant Buffalo before. There were about twenty in this herd, but even if they all charged, he was confident he could take them down.
This was just the sort of diversion he needed while marching.
“Then let’s make it a contest. I’m starting.”
“Hey, let me in too.”
Just as Rest and Isis prepared to hunt, the “woman-hating Sword Saint” Wilhelm Lubase spoke up.
Several knights and mages stood behind him.
“Oh? You guys joining too?”
“Just marching is dull. I could use some entertainment.”
“Ah, Lubase. It’s been a while since we—”
“Don’t talk to me!”
Isis raised a hand in a friendly greeting, only for Lubase to leap back with a thunderous Zuzazazazaa!
An absurdly fast backstep, leaving deep prints in the ground.
“Don’t come near me, woman! Don’t touch me! Don’t even look at me!!”
“Uh…”
“He’s in his adolescent phase. Best to ignore it.”
Rest shrugged at the bewildered Isis.
“Anyway, it doesn’t matter, right? If they join in?”
“Of course not. The more, the livelier the contest.”
Everyone readied themselves. The knights and swordsmen gripped their hilts, the mages gathered magic power.
There was nothing tangible to gain from winning, but none of them intended to lose.
“Then—begin!”
At Isis’s signal, everyone sprang into motion.
Predictably, Lubase shot forward first.
Though useless with women, his physical abilities were among the very best. He dashed ahead at an unbelievable speed.
“Impressive. He’s fast…!”
But Rest immediately caught up alongside him, activating Acceleration Magic.
“Heh… Not bad!”
“Same to you… Matching my speed without magic? You’re a monster.”
“Hmph! It’s because you rely on magic that your body stays weak!”
With that, Lubase swung his sword.
Though the buffalo were still a distance away, a slash of magic power flew from his blade, cutting into the head of one nearby beast.
“BWOOOOOOOOOOOOH!”
“I see… tough hide!”
The Giant Buffalo’s skull was thick and hard.
Even Lubase couldn’t kill it outright from range.
But he closed the distance instantly and slashed its neck.
“HAAAH!”
The massive head separated cleanly and tumbled to the ground.
“One down.”
“In that case, here’s mine!”
Rest had already reached another buffalo.
“Ice Bolt!”
“BWOOH!?”
A surge of ice engulfed it, freezing its life away.
The iced-over buffalo crashed to the ground.
“One for me too!”
“BWOOOOOH!!”
With two fallen, the herd panicked.
Some charged toward Rest and Lubase, others tried to flee.
“Wind Cutter!”
“Charge, men!!”
At that moment, Isis and the others arrived.
They unleashed spells and weapons, one after another, cutting down the buffalo in quick succession.
The vanguard of the anti-tribal expedition secured several thousand kilograms of fresh meat, greatly boosting their supplies.
Rest killed the most in number, but Lubase brought down the largest specimen.
And so, their hunting contest ended in a draw between Rest and Lubase.
