Chapter 290: Stone Walls

The very next day, preparations for building the town began in earnest.

Surveyors and architects were invited by Marquis Rosemary to draft the plans for the town.

Rest, along with Viola, Primula, and Yuri, had already shared their visions and requests, which the experts then used to design the town from a professional perspective.

Where to place the key facilities, how to run the water and sewage systems, how to defend against monsters, how to handle waste and sanitation… As the saying goes, leave things to the experts. The specialists had extensive knowledge and were able to incorporate Rest’s group’s wishes into a realistic, well-organized proposal.

Surveying the land would take time, so actual construction was still a ways off. In the meantime, however, Rest had more than enough on his plate.

“Stone Wall!”

With a chant, Rest conjured a wall of stone before him and then toppled it over, laying it flat on the ground.

“That’s about a kilometer’s worth… Still a long way to go.”

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Rest let out a deep sigh.

What he was working on was the construction of a highway.

By summoning and flattening walls of stone, he was building a paved road connecting the Rosemary Territory to the land that would become his domain.

A stone-paved road had many advantages. Dirt roads were easily affected by rain, creating puddles and potholes that made it difficult for wagons to pass.

By paving the road from the start, it would allow for the smooth movement of people and goods.

(My territory will be closely tied to the Rosemary territory. Building this road is essential… No doubt about it, this is necessary. Yeah.)

“Stone Wall!”

Muttering to himself for encouragement, Rest continued to cast spells to pave the road.

Using magic for this kind of construction wasn’t particularly rare. It was a relatively common method.

But usually, such tasks required the cooperation of dozens of mages. It was never something done solo.

Rest, however, could manage it thanks to his unlimited magic power— a feat only he could pull off.

(My magic power’s holding up fine… but still, using the same spell over and over is exhausting. Mentally, I mean.)

The repetition of such a basic task was starting to wear on him. It felt like doing endless factory work.

He had infinite magic power, so it wasn’t physically draining — but after hours of this, even his spirit began to fray.

“Rest, want a break? I brought you some food!”

The one saving grace was that Yuri was there with him.

She had come to help by bringing water and meals while he worked to pave the empty plains.

Viola and Primula weren’t around — they were off handling other responsibilities. Yuri, who wasn’t suited for office work, had instead come here to support Rest directly.

“I saw a delicious-looking bird flying around earlier, so I roasted it on a skewer. Eat up!”

“A bird, huh… Well, at least it’s actually edible this time…”

Yuri, generously speaking, was a gourmet — and less generously, had questionable tastes.

She would eat anything that looked “tasty,” whether it was insects or monsters — and she’d happily serve it to others without thinking twice.

As someone who had been on the receiving end of her questionable cuisine more than once, Rest was always a little nervous about what she might bring.

“Thanks. I really appreciate it.”

Rest didn’t stop casting spells as he accepted the water and skewered meat, taking a bite as he continued his work.

Others were working nearby as well — several laborers were filling the gaps between the stone slabs and adjusting their positioning.

Yuri was also handing out food to these workers.

“Alright, everyone — mealtime!”

“Thank you, milady!”

“Much appreciated, young miss!”

“You’re a lifesaver, ma’am!”

The workers received the food with smiles and grateful words.

Yuri, ever cheerful and unpretentious despite being the daughter of a marquis, was adored by everyone.

When they called her “lady” or “ma’am,” she responded with a silly “Heheee~” grin, and even the tired workers couldn’t help but smile at the sight.

“She’s… surprisingly popular, huh.”

It was like she was the manager of a sports team — not exactly noble-like, but definitely a natural leader.

Even if she couldn’t handle formal noble duties like Celestine could, Yuri had her own strengths and her own way of making a difference.

“I guess I’ll be relying on her a lot going forward… Anyway, back to work…”

Tearing another chunk off the grilled bird skewer, Rest returned to the simple but crucial task of conjuring stone walls.

Later, he would find out that the “bird” he’d eaten was, in fact, a monster — a grotesque monster with the body of a bird and the head of a frog.

But that… is a story for another time.
