Chapter 289: The Land Where It All Begins
With the Crazy Apes exterminated, the group secured the location that would become their future base.
Once the fire had completely died down, they investigated the area where the Crazy Apes had built their nest — and there, they discovered several human bones, clearly different from those of monkeys.
“These must’ve been adventurers caught and eaten by the apes… What a terrible sight.”
The bones, discarded like garbage, were blackened with soot, but there was no trace of flesh or skin remaining. It wasn’t the fire that had burned them away — the bones had been gnawed down to the point that they were nothing but bare white skeletons.
“Humans don’t even have that much meat on them… These things really had no restraint.”
Seeing the countless human bones, any lingering sympathy Rest had for the Crazy Apes completely vanished. Wiping them out had clearly been the right choice.
If they had held back or only partially dealt with the threat, the surviving apes would have fled elsewhere — and sooner or later, they would have attacked and eaten people again.
It had been a cruel thing to do, yes… but necessary.
“These bones… There’s nothing on them to identify who they were. It’s probably impossible to tell. Maybe we should build a temple here one day, and put up a memorial.”
“I agree… I think that would bring peace to the souls of the deceased.”
Primula said, her expression clouded as she nodded beside Rest.
Using his Presence Detection spell, Rest confirmed that no Crazy Apes remained in the area. It seemed they had indeed eliminated every last one.
“Rest, I checked out the area, and as we thought… this place really is ideal for setting up a base.”
“It’s plenty spacious. There’s a water source nearby, and the soil is fertile. I think we could build a proper town here.”
Viola and Yuri said as they returned from their survey of the surroundings.
If not for the presence of the Crazy Apes, this land would have already been considered perfect for settlement.
The land was vast, the location highly convenient, and it was close to the Rosemary Territory. If a proper road was built, they could facilitate the flow of people and goods.
“We’ll need to set up monster-repelling barrier, and then develop the land and roads… Oh, right — we’ll need to get the land surveyed first. We’ll need town plans, too. You’ve got experts for that, right?”
“Of course! The House of Rosemary will provide only the best architects.”
Viola declared confidently, puffing her chest out.
“There’s nothing here now… but that’s precisely why we can build the ideal settlement from the ground up. That’s a huge advantage.”
“Yeah, I agree. Sometimes, having nothing to begin with is actually a benefit.”
Rest said in response.
If there had already been a village or farmland here, they’d have to plan around existing structures.
But with a blank slate, they could freely build the town exactly as they envisioned.
“What kind of town should we make? To start with… I think the lord’s manor should be on that relatively elevated spot.”
“If we’re placing a temple here, then the marketplace should go over there… No, wait — considering water channels, the commercial area might be better on that side.”
“We’ll also need a training ground for soldiers. Shouldn’t that be close to the lord’s manor?”
Viola, Primula, and Yuri each offered their thoughts.
Since they would all be living in the town themselves, Rest wanted to incorporate their ideas as much as possible.
“Rest, do you have anything specific you’d like to include?”
“Well… There’s actually one thing I’ve been thinking about.”
“Oh? Do tell.”
“Alright then… I’m not sure if it’s possible, but hear me out…”
Rest began to explain to the three of them the idea for a town he had been planning for some time.
Amid the scorched remains of the monster nest, the lingering smell of smoke and soot still thick in the air, the four of them cast aside the grim atmosphere and began to share their dreams of the future — of the town they would one day build.
