Chapter 201: Hellish Cooking
On a small hill near the eastern side of the Sabnock Plains, close to the wetlands, Rest, Yuri, Ulra, the attendant named Arlie, and the knight Ostley set up their campsite and pitched their tents.
“Time for dinner! Let the cooking begin!”
“Cooking… yay.”
Urla cheered, raising a triumphant fist into the air as Yuri announced the start of their culinary session. Behind them, Arlie clapped politely, her face expressionless as ever.
“…”
“…”
Meanwhile, Yuri and Ostrey watched from a short distance away, preoccupied with chores like setting up tents, while cautiously observing the situation.
“I want to cook.”
Urla muttered quietly.
“Ah, have you ever cooked before, Urla?”
Rest asked.
“…Burn bread?”
“Oh-ho! The fact that you say ‘burn’ instead of ‘toast’ tells me everything I need to know. Don’t worry—I’ll teach you!”
Yuri declared, pounding her chest with confidence, her ample figure bouncing with the motion.
“I’ve been cooking since I was young! Recently, I’ve been learning from Primula. Honestly, you could call me a master chef now!”
Master chef? Yeah, right, Rest thought, internally correcting her boast. Yuri’s cooking skills were famously haphazard, as both Viola and Primula often commented.
“Now, for today’s main dish, we’ll be using this ingredient—worm meat!”
“Ugh!”
Rest exclaimed in shock.
Yuri unveiled a chunk of the worm they’d defeated earlier. Most of the creature’s remains had been handed over to the Lavender Border Marquis’s soldiers, but it seemed Yuri had kept a portion for herself. She placed the unsettling slab of meat onto an impromptu cooking table Rest had created using earth magic.
“When it comes to camping, barbecue is the way to go! Let’s skewer this meat and roast it!”
“…Question,”
Urla interjected.
“Ah, you’re wondering if this is edible, aren’t you? Don’t worry—my instincts are telling me this will work out!”
“…Surprising.”
Ulra muttered.
“Yes, it will certainly be a surprising flavor! Now, let’s get to prepping!”
Yuri pulled out a massive butcher knife capable of slicing through bones with ease.
“First, we need to wash off the mud before cutting it up… Rest, you’re up!”
“Really…”
Rest muttered reluctantly.
From a distance, Yuri called out to him, clearly expecting him to handle the unpleasant task. Rest wanted to pretend he hadn’t heard her, but Yuri raised her voice.
“Rest! Rest! Are you ignoring me, Rest?”
“Okay, okay, I hear you!”
He shouted back, resigned.
With no other choice, Rest approached the cooking table and used water magic to wash the worm meat, rinsing off the clinging mud.
“Thanks, that’s a big help.”
Yuri said cheerfully.
“…Are you really planning to eat this? Now that it’s clean, it’s even worse—black and purple mottled skin!”
“Of course, we’re eating it!”
Yuri declared confidently.
Even though cleaning it only made it look less appetizing, she was undeterred.
“Handle these vegetables next. Also, start a fire and heat up the iron plate. I’ll whip up something delicious in no time!”
“…Sure,”
Rest replied, his face contorting into an uneasy grimace. He followed her instructions before retreating to continue tent setup.
“Alright, let’s peel this skin. It’s too tough to eat.”
“Peeling,”
Urla said as she got to work.
“Nicely done, Urla!”
Yuri praised.
“Hunter.”
Urla replied simply, showing a hint of pride.
“I see, I see… You’re good at hunting, so you’re skilled at skinning your prey. Next, let’s cut it into manageable sizes.”
“Surprise.”
“Oh, what a surprise! A swarm of tiny insects came out from inside! Luckily, Rest just started a fire, so we’ll roast them to death right here.”
“Sizzle, sizzle. Roast.”
“Exactly, exactly. Still, the smell is quite strong. We’ll marinate the meat in a garlic-based sauce to mask the odor. Let’s chop some herbs and sprinkle them on, too.”
“Where?”
“Where did I find them? Oh, I just picked them from nearby. I’ve never seen this kind before—they’re leaves as red as blood. If left alone, they seem to grow legs and try to run away, but… it’s probably fine.”
A horrifying conversation floated over to Rest’s ears.
He exchanged a terrified glance with Ostrey, who was helping him with the tent setup.
“L-Lord Clover…”
Ostrey stammered.
“…Let’s just stop thinking about it. Empty your mind. Pretend you can’t hear their voices,”
Rest replied.
And so, the two men focused entirely on pitching the tent, deliberately ignoring the hellish cooking session unfolding nearby.
