Chapter 197: It’s Really Huge

“That’s an amazing bow. How do you even shoot with it?”

“Like this, and then like that.”

“Ah, I see… but wouldn’t it be better if you did it like this instead?”

“That’s sloppy… no, like this, and then that.”

“Oh, I get it now. It really is like this and that.”

Walking along the eastern side of the plains, Yuri and Urla were deep in conversation. Their topic was mainly focused on Urla’s bow. Earlier, after witnessing her incredible skill in shooting down a monster, Yuri had become fascinated and started asking her all sorts of questions.

Yuri had an insatiable curiosity. No matter who it was or what the subject, she lived honestly according to her interests. Now, she was cheerfully chatting with Urla, taking lessons on how to shoot a bow.

“Like this… huh? Hmm, I can’t hit anything.”

“Too small.”

“Ah, you’re right. This bow is too small for me. I need something bigger and sturdier.”

“Spring.”

“And the string should be tightly strung, right? Got it, got it…”

Before anyone realized, Yuri was having a perfectly normal conversation with Urla. Rest had no idea what Urla was saying, but Yuri was already understanding her words without the need for a translator.

“Yuri… how do you understand her so well?”

“Hm? Oh, I don’t try to understand the words; I just let my heart take them in. It’s all about passion!”

“……I see.”

Rest didn’t get it. It seemed he wasn’t ready to comprehend this yet. He couldn’t join the lively conversation between the two.

(Well… to be honest, it’s kind of a relief. They’re acting as a buffer for me.)

Frankly, if it were just Urla and the members of the Lavender Marquis family present, things would have been unbearably awkward.

(Bringing Yuri along was the right call. Her cheerful nature is a kind of talent. Is it her innate personality or something shaped by the unusual environment she grew up in? I wonder what kind of life he had in the Catreya Marquis family.)

“This area ahead turns into wetlands.”

Announced Ostrey, who was leading the group.

As they looked down, they noticed the ground was becoming more waterlogged, like a series of puddles. Beyond that were small swamps scattered here and there, and the dry land was reduced to muddy, damp ground.

“Now that I think about it… is there really any point in developing this land?”

With so much water and mud, it seemed almost impossible to build a town or cultivate farmland here. That’s what Rest thought, but Urla shook her head firmly.

“Fish, crabs, water.”

“The young lady means…”

“Ah, I see! In other words, you could farm aquatic creatures like fish and crabs here, or redirect the water to the east as a water source. Fascinating, fascinating… The fish raised here must be rich and flavorful!”

“Hmph…!”

Before the attendant could explain, Yuri eagerly interpreted Urla’s words. The female attendant glared at Yuri for stealing her role, sparks practically flying between them.

“So there’s a way to make use of wetlands, huh? In that case, we’ll have to deal with the monsters that get in the way.”

“Yes, we’re counting on you.”

Ostrey said, bowing his head.

“Most of the monsters here we can handle, but we’re struggling with the worms. If Count Clover could help us deal with them, it would be a great relief…”

“Well, I’ll do what I can. But I can’t promise anything about an enemy I haven’t even seen yet—”

Rest stopped mid-sentence. His Presence Detection magic had picked something up. A large presence was approaching from the west, slithering through the water in the wetlands.

“Everyone, stay alert! It’s coming!”

“GYAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

As Rest called for caution, a low, guttural roar erupted.

Mud splattered everywhere in massive quantities.

And then… a gigantic serpent-like creature burst out from the water.

“Whoa, that’s huge!”

“It’s… so big…”

Yuri exclaimed with sparkling eyes, while Urla muttered in a trembling voice.

“So that’s… the worm!”

“GYAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

The massive serpent, as thick as a telephone pole, reared its head high into the sky and let out an ear-splitting roar.

To confront the enormous monster, Rest began concentrating his magic energy, preparing for the fight.
