Chapter 40: The Second Heroine Meets the Villain

Having my last hope, the anime heroine, hurt like this—there’s no way I could just stand by and do nothing.

I gripped my longsword tighter than usual, feeling my strength surge.

…Now, what skills should I use to torment these guys?

I glared at Kane, who was hiding behind Zard’s shield, causing him to retreat pathetically.

“Wa-wait! Hold on! Hey, you observer! It’s against the rules to interfere in a duel, right? Call it off! Call it off!”

“Observer?”

I turned to look where Kane was pointing, and there stood Remi-san from the Adventurers’ Guild.

With a worried expression, Remi-san looked at me before approaching with a sudden idea.

Come to think of it, Kane did mention something about a duel.

Even as I remembered that, I didn’t lower my sword, and Remi-san fixed her gaze on me.

“Lloyd-san, a duel should be fought between the participants alone. However, since you interfered and Kane has requested to call it off, we’ll end the duel here. Agreed?”

Remi-san glanced at Kane, who nodded repeatedly.

“Of course! It should have been stopped sooner!”

Kane averted his gaze from us in a panic.

Wait, since when did the changed Kane become such a coward?

Since I started glaring at him, Kane’s demeanor has been off. It was as if he was reacting like he used to when he was bullied by Lloyd.

His current swaggering attitude was completely different from his former self.

…Could it be that his arrogant behavior was all a façade?

“Hey, Lloyd. Didn’t you hear? The duel’s off… hey! Lloyd, cut it out!”

Lost in thought while pressing Zard’s shield with my longsword, I heard Zard’s angry voice.

With the sound of the shield and sword grinding against each other, I shifted my gaze back to Zard.

I smirked at Zard’s words.

“As long as it’s not a duel, there’s no problem continuing, right?”

“Tch! You bastard!”

Considering how badly they had injured Alisha, there was no way I could simply back down just because the duel was called off.

Seeing that I wasn’t relenting, Zard clicked his tongue loudly.

“Ugh.”

“Are you alright, my lady?”

Just as I was about to use a skill, I heard Alisha’s pained voice from behind.

Hearing the voice of the elf woman comforting Alisha, I eased the pressure on the shield.

“Alisha…”

“Lloyd-san, the duel is over. You understand what that means, don’t you?”

Remi-san fixed her eyes on mine and spoke firmly.

In this world, adventurers fighting each other must have an observer and conduct it as a duel. Without that, severe punishment would follow.

Honestly, even knowing this, I had been about to swing my sword in anger, but now was not the time for that.

Looking at the elves crouched behind me, I exhaled deeply and sheathed my sword.

“Huh? So you’re backing off after all?”

Taken aback by my sudden retreat, Zard stumbled forward.

“Yes. Treating the wounded comes first.”

When I said that, Zard, though not satisfied, lowered his shield.

I glanced at Kane, who flinched and jumped in surprise before glaring at me with a false bravado.

Then, putting on a bravado, Kane spat out, “Consider yourself lucky!” and left with his group.

…Another cliché parting shot.

As I thought about this and turned my gaze to Alisha, I found her looking straight at me.

“Did you save us?”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t get here sooner.”

Kneeling as I spoke, I saw Alisha’s eyes widen slightly.

Then, gathering her strength to sit up, she continued.

“Could you tell me your name?”

“Me? It’s Lloyd. Just a despised villain.”

I smiled bitterly as I said this, and Alisha softly repeated my name.

“.. Lloyd-sama.”

Her voice seemed to carry a faint warmth, but I must have imagined it.

After that, I discussed with Remi-san and arranged for the elves to be taken to a private room in the Adventurers’ Guild for treatment.
