Chapter 83: The Promise of a New Encounter
The Damaski Company’s wrongdoing became public through the testimony of the major Garfish Company and the deputy manager of the Merchants’ Guild branch.
Ed had invited the guild official to discuss the opening of the Marches Company, only for Marman to arrive by chance and dig his own grave.
Thanks to that blunder, an affair that would otherwise have remained private resulted in formal punishment from the Merchants’ Guild.
The Damaski Company received a temporary suspension of business. The official penalty itself was light, but deceiving a fellow merchant destroyed the trust of other trading partners. No one could predict how much damage the company would suffer even after it was allowed to reopen.
It had brought the outcome upon itself, so Tauro felt no sympathy.
Marches was immensely grateful to him.
Without Tauro’s money and connections, he would have gone bankrupt and his life as a merchant would have ended.
Their contract, however, required Marches to keep everything secret.
He would have liked to travel throughout Dansas Village praising Tauro like a bard and proclaiming him a savior. If Tauro didn’t want that, there was nothing to be done.
Marches was a merchant, and he would honor his contract.
He would repay the favor steadily in the years ahead—along with the loan, which was hardly a small sum.
Dansas Village continued to develop.
More adventurers arrived.
Its reputation spread throughout the surrounding region, drawing young people from neighboring villages.
Sensing the change, the Merchants’ Guild even began discussing plans to establish a branch there.
It was fair to say that the village no longer showed any trace of its former decline.
New guests arrived at the inn that day as well.
Tauro had long since become a regular at the Dwarf Inn, so he was familiar with the constant flow of people.
An increasing number were young people who lacked the money to try their luck in a town but came to the village dreaming of success.
It was a good trend.
Many of them would save money there before leaving for larger towns in search of greater opportunity. Some, however, would surely become part of the community and settle in the village.
That would encourage even greater development.
Tauro resolved to continue building a village where young people would want to settle and find it difficult to leave.
“Excuse me, may I speak with you?”
As Tauro stood alone, lost in thought, a girl addressed him.
She appeared to be slightly older than he was.
She had long golden hair, red eyes, and stood taller than Tauro. Her loose-fitting clothing was predominantly white and resembled a priest’s robes.
Tauro thought she would grow into a beautiful woman. He also decided that her slightly overbearing manner wasn’t to his taste.
“What is it?”
He responded without revealing any of those thoughts.
“I’m an adventurer, but this is my first time here. Take me to the guild.”
She apparently mistook him for an inn employee.
“If you go outside and walk straight along the main street, you’ll see a building with a blue roof. That’s the Adventurers’ Guild. You can’t miss it.”
Unoffended, Tauro gave her the directions plainly.
“I told you to guide me there. Don’t you understand your job?”
So she really did think he was an employee.
“Very well, I’ll guide you. I need to get ready first, so please wait a moment. I was going to the Adventurers’ Guild anyway.”
“You’re going to make a customer wait?”
Ignoring her complaint, Tauro returned to his room, put on his usual leather armor, belted on his short sword, and prepared to leave.
Shin and Rumeya called to him.
“Tauro, are you ready to go?”
“Yes. A girl asked me to show her the way somewhere. Do you mind coming along?”
“Not at all, but show her the way?”
“She seems to be a fellow adventurer, so I’m taking her to the guild.”
“Ah, we understand.”
The two nodded.
Why am I being made to wait when he’s only taking me to the guild?
The girl was fuming.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“You made me wait just to—”
She turned angrily at the sound of the boy’s voice and found him standing there in leather armor with two adult men behind him.
“Let’s go.”
“What’s with that outfit?”
The girl’s confusion at his clothing and the presence of the two men left her barely able to say even that.
“This is how I normally dress, so please don’t worry about it. These two are my companions, Shin and Rumeya.”
“Nice to meet you, young lady.”
“Companions from the inn staff…?”
“What do you mean?”
Shin and Rumeya pointed to themselves in bewilderment. Inn employees? Neither understood what was happening.
Tauro supplied the answer.
“I’m an adventurer, just like you.”
“You’re lying!”
The astonished girl stared intently at him.
