Chapter 593 – Destruction of the Facility
While Tauro and Aeris were checking key locations within the research facility, Ragune and Ankh had reached the second-largest building.
“…This looks like housing for the facility staff.”
Ankh whispered to Ragune from their hiding place in the bushes.
“Seems so. In that case, we should head to the building Zion and Seth went to.”
Ragune suggested that they regroup with the others.
“Yeah. That place looks like the residence of whoever’s in charge of this whole facility. They might need backup.”
The two were about to leave when a pair of staff members passed close to their hiding place, talking as they walked.
“—Hey, did you hear? That top-secret operation failed, and apparently the losses were enormous. I heard the central army commanders who took part are complaining that the problem was with our monsters.”
“What? I heard it failed because information leaked to the enemy and they prepared a secret weapon in advance.”
“The officers who stopped here during the retreat were furious. They said there was no way the general could have lost otherwise.”
“You mean General Barbatos…? They say he died holding the rear. He was one of the Empire’s heroes—even a researcher like me knows his name. It must be a huge shock that someone like him died… but they shouldn’t blame us for it.”
“Exactly. And remember the Bloodsucking Wolf King – Subspecies escape? People were already questioning our management after that. Some are saying that if anything else goes wrong, they’ll push to shut this place down. The director was furious about it earlier today.”
“This is a cutting-edge facility that will shape the future of the Empire! What do those muscle-brained soldiers know?! Ever since then, we’ve been forced to mass-produce Olog-Hai and Bloodsucking Wolves, so we haven’t been able to conduct any other research, and they still have the nerve to complain!”
The two staff members continued grumbling as they entered the building.
“…That was useful information.”
Ankh grinned from the bushes.
“Indeed. Tauro was planning to destroy this place anyway, so the timing couldn’t be better.”
Ragune nodded, and the two left their hiding place and headed for the director’s residence to meet up with Zion and Seth.
Meanwhile, Zion and Seth had reached the director’s residence.
Seth went ahead to scout and beckoned Zion forward once he had confirmed it was safe.
“Seth, are Lord Tauro and the others alright?”
Zion asked Seth, who could share thoughts with Tauro.
He nodded firmly.
“Good. Then let’s check this place quickly and regroup with everyone.”
To infiltrate the residence, Zion clung to the wall and pulled herself up. Seth imitated her, jumping up and gripping the wall as well.
Peering over it into the grounds, they saw that although security had been lax on the way there, the interior of the estate was heavily guarded.
“…Tighter security than I expected. What should we do, Seth?”
Zion asked after dropping back down.
Seth couldn’t speak, so he gave no verbal answer. He thought for a moment, nodded, raised one finger, and sat down to indicate that they should wait.
“…Are we waiting for Lord Tauro to make a move?”
Zion guessed.
Seth nodded again.
“Got it…!”
Zion smiled, pleased that they could communicate so well.
After a short while, a thunderous crash came from the largest building—the research facility.
“W-What’s happening?!”
People rushed out of the researchers’ living quarters in alarm.
The sounds of shattering glass and violent destruction rang from the research building, making it obvious that something serious was happening.
Guards rushed toward the facility, but screams soon followed.
“A Rock-series puppet is rampaging!”
The Rock-series unit Tauro had left behind had begun moving on his command.
At the same time, monsters started pouring out through the facility’s loading entrance.
“Whose orders are these?! The monsters are coming up to the surface!”
One guard shouted in panic.
With a Rock-series puppet rampaging and monsters flooding out from underground, the guards were thrown into complete chaos.
Taking advantage of the confusion, the monsters began attacking them. Some also headed toward the exits, trying to escape the compound.
“This is bad! If monsters that haven’t been properly adjusted get outside, they’ll cause chaos across the Empire!”
A researcher warned the security guards.
“All the entrances and exits are secured by guards, so it should be fi—”
Before he could finish, the large gate at the entrance began to open.
“W-Who’s doing that?! Don’t open the gate at a time like this, you fools!”
The security captain shouted in alarm when he saw it opening.
His cries were useless. The gates opened fully, and the monsters surged out into the outside world.
One of the Rock-series puppets could be seen driving the monsters forward as though herding them.
“…This is bad. You—go inform the director immediately!”
The captain ordered a subordinate, then drew his sword and charged at an attacking Olog-Hai.
The ones who had opened the gate were, of course, the humanoid puppets Adam and Eve.
Under Tauro’s orders, Seth had controlled them and made them open it.
Tauro had already commanded the monsters to rampage through Imperial territory once they reached the surface, and he had destroyed the small magic-stone-tipped wand used to reinforce those commands.
The monsters would therefore continue their uncontrolled rampage across the Empire.
The remaining task was to capture the director of the research facility, and Tauro left that to Zion and the others.
Meanwhile, Tauro and Aeris continued their assault, destroying the research facility together with the Rock-series puppets.
