Chapter 56: The Repair Quest
Tauro’s first G-rank quest in the village came from the Adventurers’ Guild itself.
The job was to repair the guild building.
Judging by the battered state of the quest notice, no one had accepted it in quite some time.
Tauro had improved his woodworking proficiency, and [Precision] further enhanced his dexterity.
Repairs were his specialty.
Even so, he was astonished that the guild didn’t own so much as a ladder.
He had to build one himself.
Fortunately, timber and the other necessary materials were properly stocked in the guild warehouse.
The lack of a ladder had made him worry that he might be expected to supply the materials as well.
“I’ll finish this quickly and take a walk around the village.”
For a moment, Tauro considered renovating the building into a village landmark. That would attract too much attention, however, so he limited himself to an understated but neat repair job.
This much should earn no more than a little admiration for a handy child.
Just after he finished, the receptionist emerged from the guild. Apparently worried about assigning the quest to a child, she stood out front and looked up at the building.
“What? You’re finished already?! That’s incredible. You’re…um…”
“Tauro.”
“Right, Tauro. Do you have some kind of woodworking skill? I never imagined this building could look so good…”
Did I do a better job than I realized?
Tauro was accustomed to producing work on the level of a master artisan and had thought he was exercising considerable restraint. Evidently, it didn’t look restrained to anyone else.
He had managed to stand out at once.
Tauro climbed down from the roof and returned inside.
“Does this count as completing the quest?”
“Yes, I’ll process it now… Oh, you completed several G-rank quests at your previous branch. You’ve met the promotion requirements, so you’ll advance into the F-rank bracket today.”
“Thank you very much.”
It was Tauro’s second promotion to F-rank, so he felt none of his former excitement. Still, he would now have more quests to choose from.
After receiving the iron tag that identified him as an F-rank adventurer, Tauro set out to explore the village.
It was dusk, and villagers were emerging from their homes.
As he passed among them, they recognized him as an outsider and stared.
Just as the gatekeeper had warned, they seemed intensely suspicious of strangers.
Tauro couldn’t understand why they were so wary of an eleven-year-old child, but decided it would be best to return quietly to the inn.
I shouldn’t wander around at dusk.
He turned back and resolved to stay in his room.
As he repaired the door’s lock, a voice called to him.
“Oh? Are you an outsider too?”
A man approached. He had long brown hair like a mane, a dog’s ears and tail, and yellow eyes. He appeared to be a dog-person.
“I’m an adventurer.”
“So am I. An adventurer your age is unusual. Oh, I’m Bob.”
“I’m Tauro.”
They shook hands in greeting.
“My room’s the one at the back. Good to meet you.”
“You too.”
Bob went into his room, then came out again almost immediately.
“What are you doing for dinner?”
“I’ll eat something I prepared myself.”
“I see. Just between us, the food here isn’t very good.”
Bob leaned close and whispered into Tauro’s ear.
“Understood.”
Tauro whispered back with a laugh.
“Well, I’m off to eat that dinner.”
Bob walked away with a resigned sigh.
His neighbor seemed like a good person.
Tauro felt a little reassured.
The following morning, Tauro ate in his room and stepped outside.
He happened to meet Bob as the man emerged from his own room.
“Morning, Tauro. I heard about you yesterday. You’re the one who repaired the Adventurers’ Guild, right? I couldn’t believe how much better it looked after I’d been away for only a day. Chloe, the receptionist, kept pestering me to take that quest, but I refused because I’m no good with my hands. You saved me.”
She never recommended it to me…
Tauro swallowed the thought.
“I’m good at that sort of work, so it suited me.”
“I see. By the way, what rank are you? I’m E-rank, though I think I might be promoted soon.”
Bob produced his tag.
It was indeed copper, proof that he was E-rank.
“Completing that quest just promoted me to F-rank.”
Tauro drew the iron tag from around his neck.
“So you’re a new adventurer. Come to me if you have trouble. I can at least give you advice.”
With that, Bob entered the inn’s dining area.
“All right. I’ll start working hard on F-rank quests today.”
Tauro headed for the guild, full of determination.
