Chapter 545: Support Quest Accepted

Tauro and his party decided to take on three quests at the Adventurers’ Guild: collecting rare medicinal herbs for the Adventurer’s Guild, defeating a new species of monster called the Olog-Hai, and a support quest—participating as one of the support teams recruited to assist in the defeat of the guardian protecting an ancient ruin discovered during an investigation.

All three quests were located deep in the Antas Mountain Range, which straddled the northern Empire and the Kingdom of Sart—making them a perfect fit for Tauro and his friends.

It wasn’t unusual for other high-ranking adventurer teams to take on multiple long-term quests at once, so it wasn’t that Tauro was being greedy.

While undertaking one quest, it’s common to encounter targets from another quest along the way.

One might think it would be fine to simply defeat such targets and then accept the quest afterward to submit proof—but if another adventurer team had already accepted that quest, it could easily lead to trouble.

Depending on the situation, there may be no other option but to subjugate the monster, but in such cases no quest reward is paid, and the only income is usually from the sale of the magic stones and parts of the monster.

That’s why it’s generally better to accept any quests within your operating area that you’re likely to complete.

Of course, taking on too many quests and leaving many unfinished would damage one’s reputation with the guild…

Precisely because of that, long-term quests are easier to accept, and it’s common for advanced adventurers to juggle several of them at once.

With that in mind, Tauro’s party arranged—through a guild introduction—to meet at a diner near the guild with the A-rank team Blue Thunder Beast, the client for the “Subjugation of the Guardian of an Ancient Ruin” quest, as they were recruiting a support team.

In addition to Blue Thunder Beast, a local B-rank team called Silver Twin Mages was also participating.

“I’ve teamed up with Silver Twin Mages a few times, so I know them well, but this is our first time working with Black-Golden Wings. Rumor has it that up until recently there was a fake team that was famous, but we’ve been on a long exploration so we don’t know much about it, so let me introduce myself. I’m Jack, leader of the A-rank team Blue Thunder Beast, and I use claw swords.”

As he introduced himself, Jack slipped a weapon with three long steel claws onto his right hand to show them.

He continued:

“The rest are Longa, a longsword user; Akku, a battle-axe wielder; Bomarne, a blast-fire mage; and Forest, the priest. That makes five of us.”

Jack introduced his teammates.

“Then it’s our turn. —I’m Jemma, the older twin and leader of the B-rank team Silver Twin Magi, a water-magic user, and—”

“…I’m her younger sister, Jemis, a fire-magic user.”

The twins, identical in appearance and dressed as mages, introduced themselves.

Jemma continued:

“The rest of our team are Jimin, who uses the sword and shield, and Budar, a ranger who also doubles as an alchemist—four in total. We’ve actually taken quests together with the previous Black-Gold Wings—the one now said to have been fake. They were a very capable team… so are you sure you’ll be all right?”

Jemma eyed Tauro’s group—the ones claiming to be the real deal—with suspicion.

It seemed the impostor team had earned trust as Black-Gold Wings not just through Charm, but through actual competence as well.

“Yes, you don’t need to worry. We were the ones who captured that impostor group and handed them over to the military. And we’ve built up a fair number of achievements ourselves.”

Tauro answered confidently, perhaps thinking it would be troublesome if they were underestimated from the start

“Hey, hey, Jemma, don’t provoke them. —So, could you introduce your team as well?”

Jack, leader of Blue Thunder Beast, stepped in to keep things from turning hostile before the quest even began.

“Then, I’ll start. —I’m Tauro, leader of Black-Gold Wings. My specialties are short swords and bows, and I can use magic storage, so I can carry large amounts of baggage if needed. I also hold the title of honorary viscount, but please don’t worry about that. And—”

“I’m Aeris, a mage and healer. My specialties are lightning, water, wind, and healing magic.”

“I’m Ankh, a greatsword user. I can also use wind magic.”

“I’m Ragune. I use a spear and shield, and I can cast support magic.”

“I’m Zion. I specialize in bare hands close combat and support using light magic.”

They deliberately kept their introductions to the bare essentials.

Beyond what was necessary for coordination, there was no need to share more.

“…Hmm. I thought you had quite a few frontline fighters, but it’s good that almost all of you can use magic. And lightning magic from your mage there will be especially helpful. —All right, we’ll have Black-Gold Wings join us on this quest. I look forward to working with you.”

Jack, the leader of the Blue Thunder Beasts, seemed satisfied that Tauro’s team would be useful.

“If Jack says so… fine. Our team’s okay with it too.”

Jemma, leader of Silver Twin Magi, reluctantly accepted  Tauro and the “Black-Gold Wings” joining the team.

“Then we look forward to working with you. — Is it okay if we leave tomorrow morning?”

Tauro checks with Jack.

“Yeah. We’ll meet tomorrow morning at the east gate. Make sure you’re ready by then.”

Jack did not disclose any details about the ancient ruin or its guardian.

Because the information was extremely valuable, they hadn’t even shared much of it with the guild yet.

The discovery of an ancient ruin itself was exceptionally rare, and the team that discovers it  gets the first right to explore it.

Because of that prestige, Blue Thunder Beast planned to disclose detailed information to the guild only after completing their first exploration.

Of course, subsequent exploration quests would be issued by the guild—but the honor of having discovered it  would forever be recorded under the name of Blue Thunder Beast.

For now, however, aside from their familiar local allies, the Silver Twins Magi, no detailed information would be shared with newcomers like Tauro and the other members of the Black-Gold Wings until they reached the site.

“Just because Jack-san said it was OK doesn’t mean that your abilities are recognized, you know? Even among B-rank teams, there’s a world of difference. I’ll show you that!”

With that declaration of war, Jemma led her teammates out of the diner.

“They must’ve really gotten along with the fake team,”

Tauro said, guessing that was probably why they were being antagonistic.

“That’s possible. And since we’re outsiders who got accepted right away, they might not like that either,”

Aeris added, agreeing with him.

“No one here seems bothered, so it’s fine. Youth really is something.”

Ankh made a very old-fashioned statement.

“Heh. Looks like going through the Dragon’s Hole gave you some composure,”

Ragune teased him.

“Yeah. If this were the old Ank, he’d be yelling, ‘What’s their problem!?’ by now,”

Zion chimed in.

“Hey now. I’m the oldest on the team—can’t I talk like an adult once in a while?”

Ankh replied with a troubled grin.

Seeing that, Tauro and the others couldn’t help but laugh.
