Chapter 476: The Entourage’s Impressions

Naturally, news of the mysterious group’s attempt to abduct the Saint reached her entourage.

However, at the direction of the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Sart, who was responsible for her protection, the fact that the attackers belonged to an Imperial special-forces unit was deliberately concealed.

“Those attackers were complete fools. Can you believe they went after an entirely unrelated noblewoman?”

“Exactly. We don’t know which country they came from, but what idiots.”

“Even had they targeted the Saint directly, we’d have repelled them with ease.”

The young nobles from the Kingdom of Sart—particularly the faction centered on Suguro, Marquis Halagoura’s grandson—grossly overestimated their abilities.

“You may be nothing more than a commoner tamer—Mahodo, was it?—but you’re close to the Saint, so I suppose you make a passable guard dog.”

Suguro addressed a young man who had only recently joined his circle.

“I could never compare to you, Lord Suguro. Naturally, however, had my monsters been present, they’d have detected the enemy immediately and repelled them without a single casualty.”

Mahodo, the commoner tamer who had once boasted of his abilities to Tauro, now proudly played the role of Suguro’s faithful lackey.

“Quite so. My swordsmanship descends from the renowned Tsuyoso School, so I could’ve defeated them easily had I wished. As a leader, however, I must allow you opportunities to distinguish yourself. If we’re attacked again, I shall leave the matter to you.”

With that, Suguro drew the ornate sword that was his pride and gave it a showy flourish before his cronies.

“Of course! Should that happen, Lord Suguro wouldn’t even need to lift a finger! Hahaha!”

The Sart nobles gathered around Suguro laughed and amused themselves with pointless hypothetical boasts.

Meanwhile, the commoner-born members of the entourage had a different reaction.

“Did you hear about the group that tried to kidnap the Saint? Apparently, Lord Tauro and Lady Aeris volunteered to act as decoys and fought courageously!”

“Seriously!? …I wish they had asked us to help.”

“I overheard some local soldiers talking. The attackers were apparently incredibly strong, and the fighting was fierce. Lord Tauro and his companions were even wounded.”

“Even people of their ability struggled? If so, we might have died before accomplishing anything…”

The commoner-born members of the entourage had witnessed Tauro and Aeris’s strength during the journey. Knowing their abilities, they could readily imagine how dangerous the attackers must have been.

The members of the Kingdom of Luwan’s entourage were tense and reflective after hearing Marquis Donaissun’s report.

The territorial soldiers of Prime Minister Barriera—who had been so helpful during the Saint’s appraisal—had paid a terrible price to protect her. On learning this, the Luwan delegation couldn’t help feeling a measure of responsibility.

“You’re the people who will shoulder our kingdom’s future alongside the Saint, so we can’t allow you to be lost carelessly. Nevertheless, to protect her and prevent her from bringing shame upon our nation, a day may come when you must stake your lives. When that moment arrives, don’t hesitate. The Saint is our nation’s treasure. This time, young people from the Kingdom of Sart placed themselves in danger as her decoys and fought at the risk of their lives. We owe them our deepest gratitude.”

“Oh…! Who were these courageous young people? We must thank them properly!”

“One was Lord Tauro, son of Count Graunewald. The other was Lady Aeris, daughter of Marquis Van Dyne. Both volunteered without hesitation to serve as decoys for the Saint. Although wounded in the line of duty, they survived against extraordinarily formidable enemies. They’re capable young people who will help carry the Kingdom of Sart into the future and are truly worthy allies for our kingdom. I advise you to build strong friendships with them.”

Marquis Donaissun praised Tauro and his companions highly, encouraging the young nobles to establish ties with them.

Because of the incident, part of the Saint’s itinerary was canceled, and her party remained in the Barriera Duchy for several additional days. During that time, many young people from the Kingdom of Luwan approached Tauro and Aeris to express their gratitude and form friendships. The commoner-born youths of Sart, who admired the pair, likewise came to offer praise and respect. New bonds blossomed with each passing day.

However, not everyone was happy about this.

Suguro, Marquis Halagoura’s grandson, and his clique were plainly displeased.

“Calling someone a hero merely because he stood at the center of a failed operation that got numerous soldiers killed… Honestly, I expected better from the Kingdom of Luwan.”

Suguro let out a theatrical sigh and shook his head, urging those around him to reply.

“You’re absolutely right, Lord Suguro. The people of the Kingdom of Luwan must have been misled by false reports. Even those commoner hangers-on are fawning over him, which only proves the point.”

“His Highness the Crown Prince didn’t explain the details, but he implied that those two caused more trouble than they prevented. They’re clearly overrated.”

“How deplorable. They say a true hero wins without fighting. Those people fail to understand that enemies would scatter at the mere sight of Lord Suguro’s greatness.”

The clique continued spouting whatever groundless nonsense pleased them.

Later, Aeris spoke quietly to Tauro:

“Tauro… The members of the Kingdom of Luwan’s entourage all seemed very sincere and earnest, didn’t they?”

Aeris was clearly impressed as she praised the young people of the Kingdom of Luwan.

“Yes, they did. Seeing people like them makes me think the Kingdom of Luwan has a bright future.”

Tauro agreed with Aeris.

“Still, Saint Matilda hasn’t said a single word of thanks, has she?”

Aeris let out a sigh.

“She may simply… misunderstand the situation.”

Tauro gave a wry smile and found himself defending Matilda despite everything.
