The [Blessing] Ceremony in Duke Barriera’s territorial capital ended without incident.
Aeris’s [Blessing] reached far beyond the immediate attendees, affecting everyone within its wide area. Its power was on an entirely different level from Matilda’s. People claimed that old wounds had stopped hurting, that a haze had lifted from their minds, and even that lost eyesight had returned. As stories of these apparent miracles spread, the city erupted in praise for Saint Matilda.

Tauro knew the basic effects Aeris had described, but the growing rumors sounded so extraordinary that even he began wondering whether her [Blessing] possessed some unknown miraculous power.
“It wasn’t a miracle,” Aeris said calmly. “Old injuries improved because the spell strengthened healing and regeneration. People whose minds felt clearer may have been carrying minor curses that were removed by [Purification]. As for the people who regained their sight, temporary regeneration may have repaired damage or disease in their eyes. Ordinary healing magic can’t treat many illnesses, but regeneration sometimes can.”
“Even so, your abilities have improved enormously,” Ragune said. “It was amazing. I only dislike that Matilda is receiving all the credit.”
“I was deeply moved too, Aeris!” Zion said, pressing her hands together as if she had found a new object of worship.
“I may have shed a tear or two myself,” Ankh admitted.
“Please stop. I don’t need the credit, and I’ve done nothing that deserves worship. Ankh only cried because he’s getting old.”
“Was that last part really necessary?”
Everyone laughed, easing the tension that had lingered since the morning.
A knock sounded at the door. Viscount Musai and Marquis Donaissun entered when Tauro answered.
“The ceremony concluded successfully. Thank you, Lady Aeris.”
Musai bowed deeply as the person responsible for the territorial capital. Donaissun followed his example, though his expression remained troubled.
“I regret that we deceived so many people into believing a miracle was performed by our Saint.”
“Have you found the source of the sealing spell?” Aeris asked.
“We’re still searching, but we have discovered nothing,” Donaissun replied.
“Then the source may already have been withdrawn. I can no longer sense the additional barrier or curse around the residence. Whoever created it may have released the spell after realizing the attempt had failed.”
“Then the culprit may escape entirely. The Crown Prince’s people have also been sending inquiries, so I can’t tell whether they’re innocent, responsible, or merely pretending to know nothing.”
Donaissun’s unease only deepened.
“At least the ceremony ended safely,” Musai said. “I’ll report everything to my father, Prime Minister Duke Barriera. Your route will eventually take you into Marquis Halagoura’s territory, correct? Please remain cautious.”
Had the ceremony failed in Barriera territory, House Halagoura’s faction could have exploited the disgrace. Musai was plainly relieved that the immediate danger had passed.
“We still don’t know who was responsible,” Donaissun said. “Luwan can’t ignore the possibility that the same thing will happen again. Matilda is our country’s greatest diplomatic asset.”
“The Saint’s party will remain here for several more days,” Tauro warned. “It would be unwise to relax yet. The four fires on the first day and today’s seal may have been created by the same person, or by separate groups with entirely different motives.”
“You’re remarkably composed for your age, Lord Tauro. My father described you accurately,” Musai said with an appreciative smile.
“Would Lord Tauro and his companions be willing to remain closer to the Saint from now on?” Donaissun asked.
“I would rather not. Matilda sees Lady Aeris as a romantic rival because of a misunderstanding. Remaining close while she glares at Aeris would be uncomfortable for everyone. We’ll continue accompanying the party from a distance.”
“I see. The rumors again… Very well. But if you sense anything resembling the seal, report it immediately.”
“Of course.”
Tauro and Donaissun shook hands on the agreement.
