Chapter 419: A Temporary Solution?
After following Grado to the warehouse and learning what was happening inside, Tauro decided not to charge in alone. He was still in the middle of an adventurer quest, and recklessly attacking an unfamiliar organization without support would accomplish little.
He initially considered following the warehouse supervisor. The man did leave soon afterward, but instead of traveling directly to the organization’s leader, he headed toward a crowded main street.
Tauro couldn’t safely remain invisible among so many pedestrians without colliding with someone and causing a commotion, so he dispelled the spell and continued at a distance.
The supervisor entered a message-delivery office.
Such businesses carried letters and verbal messages to their intended recipients as quickly as possible. Some branches could also transmit short communications through magic tools installed in different locations, although the service was expensive and offered little confidentiality.
“I can’t follow a message once it’s been sent. I should return to the others.”
Tauro abandoned the pursuit and headed back to the castle gate.
When he reached the guard station, Ragune, Ankh, and Zion were handing the captured mercenaries over to the territorial soldiers.
“Perfect timing. Captain, may I speak with you?”
“What is it, young man?”
The captain who had arrived with the soldiers responded kindly, still believing Tauro to be an ordinary child.
“This will explain who I am.”
Rather than offer a long introduction, Tauro presented his territorial-inspector certificate.
“T-That crest! My apologies, Inspector! How may I assist you?”
Realizing that Tauro was an official acting on behalf of the lord, the captain immediately saluted.
“The situation is as follows—”
Tauro explained Grado’s escape route, the concealed sewer entrances, and everything he had witnessed inside the warehouse.
The captain’s expression grew increasingly grave. This was clearly much more than a minor smuggling case.
“I understand. I’ll dispatch soldiers to surround and search the warehouse. What will you do, Inspector?”
“I’ll leave the investigation inside the capital to you. I still have another obligation to fulfill. Ragune, Ankh, Zion—are you finished here?”
“Yes. The prisoners have been transferred. Did you learn where Grado went?”
“I did. The soldiers will handle the warehouse from here. Captain, I leave the rest to you. We need to rejoin Garde-san and finish our quest.”
Tauro entrusted the raid to the territorial soldiers and returned to his responsibilities as an adventurer.
Following his report, a detachment surrounded the warehouse and stormed it. The workshop contained overwhelming evidence of illegal drug production, including large quantities of the finished substance.
Grado attempted to escape again but was captured by the soldiers.
The supervisor, however, had already vanished. Apparently, he had recognized the danger and fled after sending his message.
The soldiers were pleased by the physical evidence and arrests, but when Tauro later heard the outcome, he felt that the case remained far from resolved.
Tauro and his companions rejoined Garde and resumed delivering produce and other goods along his route.
Several days later, they escorted him safely back to Marfa Village and completed the quest.
Garde also signed the formal multi-year rental contract for Tauro’s [Magic Storage] (Medium) bag. Black-Gold Wings then returned to the territorial capital’s Adventurers’ Guild and reported the request complete.
With their work finally finished, Tauro suggested taking a break before returning to the castle.
“Let’s eat something first. What would everyone like?”
“I haven’t eaten pork cutlets in far too long.”
Ragune requested her usual favorite.
“I’d like miso-marinated meat, but I doubt we can find it here.”
Ankh chose another dish unavailable in the territorial capital.
“I want whatever Tauro-sama chooses!”
Zion, as devoted as ever, left her meal to Tauro.
Their requests were different, but none could easily be found nearby.
“…Then shall we visit the Dragonfolk Village?”
That was the one place capable of satisfying everyone.
Tauro had introduced miso to the dragonfolk, and their cooks had since begun producing their own version. Their experiments had also produced a new dish: miso cutlet.
Because both curry and pork cutlets had originally been introduced by Tauro, the village’s curry restaurant soon added the dish to its menu.
“A taste of Nagoya, all the way out here?!”
The dragonfolk cooks had independently created a dark, rich miso remarkably similar to Hatcho miso. Combining it with pork cutlets had naturally led them to something almost identical to Nagoya-style miso cutlet from Tauro’s previous life.
“What’s Nagoya, Tauro-sama?”
Zion looked curiously at him after the unfamiliar name slipped out.
“It’s the place in my homeland most famous for eating miso cutlet like this.”
“Really? You should’ve told us about such a wonderful dish much sooner!”
Ragune waited impatiently, practically drooling over the plate before her.
“The aroma of the miso is excellent.”
Ankh leaned closer and inhaled appreciatively.
“Hahaha… I never expected the dragonfolk to create their own Hatcho-style miso. Teach them one idea, and they don’t merely produce two or three more—they produce ten.”
Impressed once again by their ingenuity, Tauro joined the others in giving thanks for the meal.
Ragune, Ankh, and Zion all enjoyed the new dish enough to order second helpings. Tauro savored a flavor from his previous life, bringing the long quest to a satisfying conclusion.
