Chapter 403: A Popular Person in Town

After completing the request by escorting Alimar and his party safely back to Zenyu, Tauro and the rest of Black-Gold Wings returned to Caxart.

“The assignment lasted much longer than planned. It feels as though we’ve been away from Caxart for ages,” Ankh remarked as they approached the city.

“It was supposed to be a straightforward escort,” Tauro said with a chuckle. “Instead, we fought bandits, became involved in a duel, helped reform a spoiled nobleman, and dealt with several other problems besides.”

The events of the past two weeks had made the journey far more eventful than anyone expected.

“Let’s report to the Adventurers’ Guild first,” Ragune suggested eagerly. “After that, I want dinner at our usual inn. I’ve been looking forward to eating crab again.”

“Crab sounds wonderful,” Zion agreed.

“Then that will be the plan,” Tauro said. “Still, does Caxart seem even livelier than it was when we left?”

“It does,” Zion replied after looking around. “The city feels full of energy again. It reminds me of how Caxart was before the Flaming Crab crisis.”

Having grown up in Caxart, Zion knew the city’s normal atmosphere better than the others.

“I’m glad it has recovered,” Tauro said, visibly relieved. “Let’s finish our guild report.”

They headed directly to the Adventurers’ Guild.

“Welcome back, everyone from Black-Gold Wings,” Armine said as soon as she recognized them. “We received a brief message about the request, but it sounds as though quite a lot happened.”

“This is our full completion report.”

Tauro handed over the written account he had prepared in advance.

“Everything appears to be in order,” Armine said after checking it. “By the way, Tauro-san, Black-Gold Wings has become extremely popular in Caxart.”

“Popular?”

Tauro looked around in confusion. Several adventurers whom the party had previously taught to hunt Flaming Crabs were watching them, as were many newer adventurers.

The guild hall itself seemed far more energetic than before.

“Think about everything your party did here,” Armine explained. “Crab dishes have become a local craze, and you were the one who introduced them. Black-Gold Wings exposed the former mayor’s crimes, helped uncover corruption inside this branch, and taught E-rank adventurers how to hunt Flaming Crabs safely.”

“Now the Flaming Crab Hunt is one of our most popular requests. The demand for crab dishes and the success of those adventurers have spread your party’s reputation throughout the city.”

The power of crab is terrifying.

Tauro couldn’t think of any better response.

“That’s a little troubling…” he said awkwardly.

“It certainly is,” Armine replied, although she meant something entirely different. “Crab prices have risen, so the rewards for Flaming Crab requests have also increased. Residents who aren’t adventurers have started sneaking out to the salt lake at night in hopes of making easy money.”

“Several have already been killed by the crabs.”

“They brought it upon themselves,” Ankh said in disgust. “An untrained civilian has no business challenging a D-rank-band monster.”

“There’s no medicine for foolishness,” Ragune added without sympathy.

“That’s why the guild has begun issuing nighttime patrol requests around the salt lake,” Armine said.

“Is the city administration not handling the patrols?” Tauro asked.

“Caxart is still being governed by the deputy sent by Count Graunewald. He appears overwhelmed with other work and hasn’t had time to coordinate with us.”

“I see.”

The city’s recovery had brought more travelers, merchants, and business, which had also increased the administration’s workload. A deputy appointed on short notice could hardly be expected to handle everything easily.

“The E-rank adventurers you trained have also become local celebrities,” Armine continued. “The rewards are good, so other adventurers are trying hard to follow their example. Some have even begun calling themselves ‘Flaming Crab Hunters.’”

The story seemed to grow more exaggerated with every sentence, so Tauro decided not to comment.

He did, however, begin to wonder whether excessive hunting might eventually drive the Flaming Crabs around the salt lake to extinction.

The monsters had once been a dangerous nuisance. Now that they had become a valuable food resource, the city would need to manage their numbers carefully.

We should get the cultivation facility operating as soon as possible.

That project was probably another reason the deputy was so busy.

I’m sorry for adding to your workload.

Tauro silently apologized in the direction of the former mayor’s residence, where the deputy was working.

After Armine completed the paperwork, several local adventurers came over to greet the party.

They were members of the groups Black-Gold Wings had taught to subjugate Flaming Crabs. Some reported that they had already been promoted into the D-rank band.

Their repeated success against Flaming Crabs had earned excellent evaluations during their promotion assessments, and they sincerely credited Tauro and his companions for teaching them the necessary tactics.

Black-Gold Wings had become popular both inside the guild and throughout Caxart. Few residents recognized the party’s faces, but their name was now widely known.

When the group arrived at their usual inn, the innkeeper welcomed them enthusiastically.

Their usual rooms were already occupied, so he offered them the inn’s finest room instead.

Business had flourished ever since Tauro taught the kitchen how to prepare Flaming Crab. The inn was now so popular that every ordinary room had been booked.
