Chapter 370: A Day of Complete Rest (6)

Tauro walked alone toward Caxart’s mayoral residence.

Count Graunewald had returned from the Royal Capital and was staying there again.

Tauro had originally intended to visit the capital after Ragune returned from the Van Dyne Marquisate and personally deliver the improved seeds. Instead, his adoptive father had come back to Caxart to select a new mayor.

“Caxart is one of the most important cities in the domain. After the previous administration’s betrayal, Father must be having difficulty choosing someone trustworthy.”

Tauro sympathized with him, but he had only recently become the count’s adopted son and hadn’t yet been formally introduced throughout the territory.

He had no authority to interfere in the appointment, so he put the matter from his mind.

A hooded woman approached from the opposite direction.

Her build and movements suggested that she was female, and although the hood concealed her eyes, Tauro sensed that her attention was fixed upon him.

“Do I know her?”

 They passed each other.

At that instant, the woman’s attention transformed into murderous intent.

Tauro reacted before conscious thought. He drew Shortsword Tauro and intercepted the dagger flashing from beneath her cloak.

 Metal rang against metal.

“Damn it! I thought I could kill you with the first strike!”

The hooded woman sprang backward, shocked by his response.

“Who are you?” Tauro asked calmly. “I don’t remember earning your personal hatred.”

He reactivated [Presence Detection] and searched the surrounding area.

The skill had been suppressed until moments earlier. Only instinct had warned him of the attack.

At first, he detected no nearby accomplices.

 A lone assassin?

Then [True Eye] revealed an observer positioned at the extreme edge of its range.

The attacker and one lookout. Those appeared to be the only enemies.

“You don’t remember us?” the woman snarled. “My companions confirmed that you were among the monsters who attacked the headquarters of our Assassins’ Guild!”

“I understand. You’re one of the remnants.”

“We survivors will pursue you to the ends of the world and kill you!”

“I’m afraid you have misunderstood the situation,” Tauro replied. “You aren’t pursuing us. We’re hunting you.”

Through [True Eye], he saw the distant observer’s life signal suddenly vanish.

An allied presence appeared at the same location.

It was one of the dragonfolk warriors.

Most of the force that had participated in the eradication operation was still staying in Caxart. The surviving assassins had chosen the worst possible city in which to seek revenge.

Before the woman could react, another dragonfolk warrior reached them and cut her down.

“The pheasant that keeps silent is never shot…” Tauro murmured, remembering a proverb from his previous life.

“Are you unharmed, Lord Tauro?” the dragonfolk warrior asked. “Forgive my delay. We repelled several remnants who attacked our people, but I didn’t expect one to target you directly.”

“I’m fine. I had lowered my guard, so she surprised me.”

Tauro examined the dead assassin’s dagger.

“It was coated with poison. My [Complete Poison Resistance] would probably have protected me even if it had landed. Pella was also here, so I was never truly defenseless.”

He touched the belt Pella was imitating, silently apologizing for denying it a chance to act.

The slime familiar trembled in apparent dissatisfaction.

“Then we’ll continue searching the city,” the warrior said. “Pella, please protect Lord Tauro.”

Pella released its belt disguise, bounced into the air, and flattened itself into the shape of a shield. It then returned to its slime form before once again becoming Tauro’s belt.

“It says it’ll protect me properly,” Tauro translated with a laugh.

“Ha ha! The message was perfectly clear to me as well. Please excuse me.”

 The warrior departed.

“How many Assassins’ Guild remnants are still hiding nearby? When Ragune returns, we should discuss the situation together.”

Tauro stroked the belt-shaped Pella and resumed walking toward the mayoral residence.

“Tauro! You’ve come to see me again so soon!”

Count Graunewald welcomed him enthusiastically, pulling him into an embrace and patting his back.

“I received the operation report. Thank you for helping eradicate the Assassins’ Guild. Discovering Viscount Bomen’s involvement was shocking, although perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised.”

 The count smiled.

“Will you dine with me afterward? I’d like to hear the full story from you.”

“Of course, Father. But I first came to make a proposal concerning agriculture in the territory.”

Tauro explained the improved crop seeds.

“You created something like that?” Count Graunewald exclaimed. “Thank you, Tauro. Our domain has never possessed many distinctive agricultural products because salt revenue was always sufficient. The farmers will be delighted by these seeds.”

Once again grateful for the son he and his wife had gained, the count led Tauro inside for dinner.

Thus ended another remarkably eventful day of complete rest.
