Chapter 332: And Thus into Legend…

Tauro used [Spatial Transfer] to send every dragonfolk who had gathered in the Royal Capital back to the Dragonfolk Village.

They had spent months assisting him by pursuing the Assassins’ Guild.

Returning them home both honored their hard work and allowed them to celebrate the dungeon conquest – the dragonfolk’s centuries-old dream – with their families.

 One week passed.

During that time, Tauro, Ragune, and Ankh continued accepting quests through the Royal Capital headquarters as usual.

“That’s another quest successfully completed,” Tauro said after finishing the reporting procedure at the reception desk.

“I think I’m finally becoming accustomed to working with only the three of us,” Ankh admitted.

“So am I,” Ragune said. “At first, the absence of Aeris and her magical support left an enormous gap, but recently that feeling has begun to fade.”

“Her magic supported us in both attack and defense… I wonder how she’s doing now that she’s returned to the Van Dyne domain.”

Remembering the companion who had left the team made Tauro sentimental.

That evening, several packages arrived at Count Graunewald’s residence from the Van Dyne domain.

One package plainly contained Aeris’s ebony staff. The shapes of the others made their contents equally easy to guess.

They held the complete set of equipment Tauro had made and given to her.

A letter enclosed with the packages expressed Aeris’s heartfelt gratitude for everything he had done.

She had now relinquished adventuring completely.

The lingering injury didn’t prevent her from living an ordinary life, but strenuous exercise remained impossible. Aeris had once regarded noble society as something she could leave if necessary, secure in the knowledge that adventuring would remain another path open to her.

Returning the equipment showed that she had resolved to close that path and move forward with her life as a noblewoman.

Among the returned belongings was the pendant marking her as a member of Black-Gold Wings.

Tauro was now the only remaining founding member of the team.

“Receiving all of this back makes her departure feel real all over again…”

 Sadness pressed down on him.

Pella, disguised as his belt, shifted gently against his waist as though offering encouragement.

“Thank you, Pella.”

Tauro stroked the slime familiar and forced himself to change his perspective.

Aeris had chosen her own future. He needed to accept that decision and continue moving forward as well.

“Perhaps the next person to leave will be you, Leader,” Ankh said, patting his shoulder.

The remark reminded Tauro that his adoption into a noble family might eventually change his own life.

“Me? Perhaps someday… but I want you and Ragune to remain my friends, whatever happens.”

 His voice sounded unexpectedly vulnerable.

“Ha ha ha! I’ll always remain at Tauro’s side,” Ragune declared. “That’s my pledge as a companion bound to you by blood pact, as your friend, and as someone who owes you an immeasurable debt.”

She lightly struck his shoulder in reassurance.

“I’m not going anywhere if Leader still wants me around,” Ankh added. “Besides, if I eventually enter House Graunewald’s service, I might even enjoy a peaceful old age. Wahaha!”

He threw an arm around each of them and slapped their backs.

Several days later, a remarkable change appeared in the Dragonfolk Village.

A towering statue had been erected in the large plaza along the village’s main street.

It depicted a boy at full height. A plaque on the base read: ‘Tauro, the human hero who saved the Dragonfolk Village and helped fulfill our people’s dearest dream.’

Statues of various sizes had also appeared beside the dungeon entrance and exit, before the curry shop, outside Chief Ryuga’s residence, in front of the Adventurers’ Guild, and at both entrances to the village.

Malak and the other dragonfolk who had worked in the Royal Capital had apparently taken inspiration from the many statues they saw there. Upon returning home, they proposed honoring Tauro in the same fashion.

Chief Ryuga and the rest of the village approved unanimously, then kept the construction secret so the statues would surprise Tauro.

“I’m certainly surprised, but this is far beyond embarrassing…”

Tauro could only laugh weakly while staring up at his enormous stone likeness.

“Your achievements for the Dragonfolk Village are worthy of this honor,” Ragune said, puffing out her chest. “As the person who first brought you here, I’m proud as well!”

“I’d beg them to stop if the statue were of me, but since it’s Leader, I suppose it can’t be helped. Wahaha!”

Ankh found the entire situation wonderfully reasonable because it was happening to somebody else.

“I’ll ask Chief Ryuga to remove them, though I doubt he’ll agree… At the very least, I’ll make him remove the one in front of the Adventurers’ Guild.”

Tauro was determined to eliminate the statue outside the branch he intended to continue visiting.

His protest succeeded only in that one location.

Even Chief Ryuga refused to remove the others.

Tauro’s achievements were too important, the chief insisted, and the story needed to be handed down to the village’s children and grandchildren.

Tauro personally saw no reason his deeds needed to be preserved for future generations, but to the dragonfolk the matter was deeply significant.

Thus, the statues and the story of Tauro’s accomplishments would remain in the Dragonfolk Village for generations.

Within that legendary settlement, Tauro himself had become a living legend.

“I suppose I must give up on having them removed.” Tauro sighed. “Ragune, Ankh, Pella – I’m thinking of moving our base again while we have the opportunity. Would that be all right?”

“Where are we going this time?” Ankh asked.

“I’ll follow you anywhere!” Ragune answered immediately.

Pella trembled with a jelly-like wobble of agreement.

“Our next destination is…”

Tauro told his two companions and one familiar where they’d go, and together they departed on a new adventure.

…The End…

Thank you for reading this far!

Next, they travel to the distant west. Please look forward to the continuation!

Just kidding.

I simply wanted to try ending the story like that once.

The next chapter will continue as usual.

  1. Its good that they returned the equipment but i hate that they returned the pendents too. It feels like denying everything they went through just to feel like they don’t have a place there anymore. I mean isn’t it better to keep it as a momentum or keepsake?

    1. and mc should’ve visited the place where it all started (sailis city or something) even if its just to meet the receptionist Nei and branch manager Leo who did so much for him.
