Chapter 318: Activities in the Royal Capital

With all kinds of thoughts in their hearts, the four members of Black-Gold Wings began spending the three months that remained.

Their main base was still the Dragonfolk Village, but recently they had also been visiting the Adventurers’ Guild headquarters in the Royal Capital to make themselves known there.

Thanks to Aeris’s efforts, Black-Gold Wings was already recognized in the Royal Capital as a talented young team. However, Tauro had been absent during that period, so he needed to establish his own reputation as the team’s leader.

D-rank adventurers were often assigned to support higher-ranked teams.

For example, they might join a large-scale quest led by a B-rank team and handle baggage, combat support, medical assistance, and similar duties.

Because such work still carried considerable danger, only adventurers in the D-rank band or above were normally allowed to take it.

Most of the tasks could be called chores, but on a high-rank quest, even a person doing chores could easily lose their life.

Naturally, higher-ranked adventurers preferred to entrust those duties to a reliable team, even when all the candidates were D rank.

Under Aeris’s leadership, Black-Gold Wings had steadily earned the trust of the Royal Capital’s adventurers. Their achievements over a short period had made them so dependable that many teams now requested them by name.

Then the leader of that trusted team changed from Aeris to a thirteen-year-old boy.

In truth, the original leader had merely returned, but the adventurers of the Royal Capital had no way of knowing that.

It was therefore unsurprising that some of the teams requesting their assistance initially felt uneasy.

That was another reason Black-Gold Wings needed to remain active in the Royal Capital.

By appearing at the guild headquarters several times each month and completing quests successfully, the D-rank team quickly dispelled those doubts.

On one quest, they accompanied a B-rank team into a deep cave to exterminate monsters, officially serving as baggage carriers and support personnel. To put it mildly, Black-Gold Wings contributed more than the B-rank team did.

They had initially been ordered to remain in the rear because of the danger, but every member of Black-Gold Wings wore equipment that Tauro had modified with magic.

Tauro’s support fire with his bow was powerful enough to resemble an attack from the main force, while his commands and his companions’ coordinated movements were on par with those of an experienced B-rank team.

At the same time, they were considerate enough to leave the decisive moments to the B-rank team, preserving its dignity as the quest leader.

Any concern over the change in leadership soon vanished. The Royal Capital’s leading adventuring teams came to regard Black-Gold Wings as dependable, and requests naming them increased even further.

Although they were active in the Royal Capital only intermittently, the D-rank team led by a thirteen-year-old boy left a strong impression on the other adventurers. Many now looked forward to seeing how far the team would rise.

After reporting the completion of another quest, Tauro and his companions left the Adventurers’ Guild headquarters.

“Hmm… I still have trouble adjusting to the difference.”

 Tauro sounded unusually unsettled.

“What difference?”

Aeris asked, unsure what he meant.

“We normally take quests from the Dragonfolk Village branch, right? Over there, we’re literally treated as novices. Then we come here and people call us a promising young team or rising stars.”

“Ha ha! I know exactly what you mean. I’m treated as inexperienced in the village too. But here, people expect things from us and appreciate what we do!”

Ragune was in an excellent mood. Just before they left the guild, another team had tried to scout her.

In this case, “scouting” meant inviting her to leave Black-Gold Wings and join their team instead.

Adventurers tended to value offensive power above everything else, so a capable shield specialist like Ragune was rare and drew considerable attention.

The achievements of Black-Gold Wings had made some of the leading teams reconsider the importance of a dedicated defender. Several had jokingly asked Ragune, “Why don’t you join us?”

Naturally, Ragune refused them at once, but she could hardly feel displeased by the recognition.

“Ragune was receiving invitations even before the leader returned,” Ankh said. “It feels good to know people value you, doesn’t it? There are plenty of front-line fighters like me who specialize in attacking, but few people train seriously as shield specialists. It’s a minor path. For a team that needs one now, poaching Ragune would be faster than training somebody from the beginning.”

“How rude. Trying to poach her, even as a joke, right in front of her companions…”

Aeris puffed out her cheeks as she remembered it, pretending to be angry all over again.

“Now, now. If Ragune is valued that highly, we should be proud to have her with us. Besides, Aeris, people approached you too, didn’t they?”

Tauro tried to calm her by changing the subject.

“That doesn’t matter. I’m much happier that your reputation is rising, Tauro. Since you’re the leader, no one has openly tried to recruit you, but everyone says they’re excited to see what the future holds for Black-Gold Wings.”

Aeris’s irritation vanished, replaced by a broad smile.

“I still can’t stop comparing everything here with the Dragonfolk Village, so I can’t simply be happy about it.”

The people of the village had become Tauro’s standard. Because of that, he couldn’t bring himself to accept the Royal Capital’s evaluation without reservation.
