Chapter 31: Arrival in the Royal Capital
On the seventh day after departing Saisi, shortly after noon, Paulo slowed the lead wagon and drew alongside the second wagon, where Tauro was riding.
“Tauro, you can see the royal capital now.”
Shading his eyes with one hand, Tauro peered from the wagon toward the road ahead.
Far in the distance, a seemingly endless wall stretched left and right like the horizon.
“The wall is so long that it can’t even be compared with Saisi’s.”
“When we get closer, you’ll see how impressive its height is too.”
As they approached the capital, the royal castle came into view beyond the wall, towering atop a low hill.
“So that’s the royal capital… I’m already getting nervous.”
Tauro quailed at the thought of teaching Reversi to the people who lived there—to nobles of the ruling class.
Just as Paulo had said, the sheer scale and height of the city gate overwhelmed him when they reached it.
Looking up made his neck ache.
Tauro and the members of the D-rank team Red Flash, all first-time visitors to the capital, stood staring with their mouths open until Meena told them to close them.
Everyone else laughed, but no newcomer could reasonably have remained unimpressed.
No permission was required to pass through the city gate.
The main gates apparently remained open not only during the day but at night as well.
The gates of the royal castle itself closed at night, of course, but Tauro was still surprised.
Passing through the city gate felt like entering another world.
Most buildings in Saisi were no more than two stories tall; only the lord’s residence and the city’s principal facilities rose higher. Here, three- and four-story buildings lined the streets.
Tauro had lived in a city in his previous life, so this shouldn’t have astonished him. Perhaps because he kept comparing it with Saisi, however, a quiet “Amazing…” escaped his lips.
Even more striking was the mixture of races.
In Saisi, he had seen beastfolk adventurers and Angus the dwarven blacksmith, but the capital was filled with peoples he had never encountered.
The only ones he recognized immediately were elves.
“We’re going straight to the company’s headquarters! Please follow us!”
Paulo leaned out from the driver’s seat and called to Tauro’s group behind him.
“Understood!”
Tauro answered loudly, then leaned out toward the wagon behind his and repeated the message at the top of his voice.
A quiet voice would have vanished in the capital’s bustle.
Five Arrows, Red Flash, and Meena, who had been walking beside the wagons, each nodded and moved behind the caravan.
Within the capital, the road was generally divided into separate areas for wagons and pedestrians.
Saisi followed the same custom, but only loosely; the division there wasn’t clearly defined.
Overwhelmed by the capital’s unfamiliar atmosphere, Tauro continued with the group to the company’s headquarters.
“We’ll report the bandit incident to the Adventurers’ Guild as a precaution and complete the quest formalities. We’re leaving in five days, correct?”
The leader of Five Arrows confirmed the schedule with Paulo.
“Yes. Please meet here again five mornings from now.”
“Understood. What will Red Flash do?”
“We’ll come with you. We want to finish the paperwork too.”
“What about Satou and Meena?”
“I’ll help Paulo and the others.”
“I’m guarding Tauro, so I don’t need to go.”
“All right, then. Let’s split up.”
With that, Five Arrows and Red Flash quickly departed.
“Five Arrows seem completely at home in the capital.”
Impressed, Tauro asked Meena about them.
“They’ve taken this kind of quest many times. So have I.”
“Does it just take practice?”
“Only at first. The city is huge, so if you get lost, use that tower of the royal castle as a landmark.”
Meena pointed toward a particularly tall tower rising from the castle.
“You got lost, didn’t you, Meena?”
“Yes. I was trying to reach the Adventurers’ Guild headquarters, wandered around for half a day, and only then noticed that tower.”
Tauro couldn’t tell whether she was serious or joking. He began to suspect that Meena might be a natural airhead.
