Chapter 309: Battle with the Dark Great Wolf
On the staircase between Floors 113 and 114, Tsugumu’s escort team and Black-Gold Wings found Salaman protecting his badly injured daughter from an enormous wolf-like monster.
“Tauro, why did you follow us? I told you to remain in the rest room!”
Tsugumu reprimanded him while drawing a weapon and moving between the monster and Salaman.
“Tsugumu’s team, please treat my daughter!” Salaman cried. “She was struck by the Dark Great Wolf’s abnormal-status attack and is in critical condition!”
He lowered Salaan beside the staircase and appealed to the escort team’s healer.
“This is an ascending monster from the deep floors,” the healer replied through clenched teeth. “We can’t turn away from it yet. Everyone is needed to contain the creature.”
“But my daughter…”
Tauro and Aeris immediately hurried to Salaan and began treating her. Ragune and Ankh positioned themselves in front of the two healers.
“What exactly is an ascending monster?” Ankh asked without taking his eyes from the beast.
“It’s a monster that has climbed far above the floor where it normally lives,” Ragune explained. “Such cases are extremely rare. Dark Great Wolves are powerful creatures usually encountered around Floor 170. One appearing near Floor 113 is almost unheard of.”
The Dark Great Wolf suddenly released [Dark Breath] toward the escort team.
The black torrent was broad enough to threaten everyone behind them as well. Ankh struck it with a wind-enhanced slash from his greatsword, weakening its force. Ragune then activated the Mirror Turtle Rectangular Shield.
“[Area Protection]!”
A translucent barrier spread before the group and held the breath back for a moment. That gave Aeris enough time to complete a stronger barrier, which stopped the remaining attack.
Tsugumu confirmed that the rear line was safe and issued orders.
“Concentrate on the Dark Great Wolf. The rear guard will remove abnormal conditions while the vanguard continues the attack.”
The escorts answered together and pressed forward.
[Dark Breath] was especially dangerous because it inflicted several conditions at once: blindness, paralysis of the limbs, and a powerful poison. The vanguard repeatedly required treatment after being exposed.
Tauro was barely affected thanks to [Complete Poison Resistance], [Abnormal Status Resistance], and [Dark Spirit’s Blessing (Weak)]. The others weren’t so fortunate. Even Salaman, an exceptionally powerful dragonfolk warrior, was suffering from the poison while trying to remain near Salaan.
Tauro moved Salaan away from her father, administered a detoxification potion, and used [Abnormal Status Recovery] to purge the poison and paralysis. Aeris supported him with detoxification and healing magic.
Although [Dark Breath] did little to Tauro personally, treating an entire party after every attack would eventually exhaust the rear guard.
While continuing Salaan’s treatment, he studied the Dark Great Wolf’s movements.
The monster was fast and cautious. Whenever the escort team’s vanguard prepared a powerful strike, it leaped away, used intermediate fire magic to interrupt their advance, and followed with [Dark Breath]. It occasionally threatened them with its fangs and forepaws but never committed long enough to be surrounded.
The rear guard couldn’t contribute offensive magic because it was constantly removing the effects of [Dark Breath].
If that single ability could be stopped, even briefly, the entire battle would change.
Once Salaan’s condition stabilized, Tauro rose and stepped toward the front line.
