Chapter 29: Trouble and Anxiety
During the few days before his journey to the royal capital, Tauro suffered one misfortune after another.
First came the confrontation with the E-rank adventurers, then the trouble with his father. That morning, yet another adventurer from elsewhere had picked a fight with him.
The man apparently possessed a basic [Appraisal] ability. After discovering that Tauro’s shortsword had been made by Angus, a blacksmith whose reputation was rapidly growing, he must have concluded that it was valuable.
He made a false accusation and tried to take the weapon.
Naturally, [Presence Detection] had already alerted Tauro that the man was following him. Tauro led him outside the city to a place near several local adventurers, loudly denounced the attempted theft so they would hear, and defeated the man just as they arrived.
With witnesses present, it was clearly self-defense.
Tauro was E-minus rank, while his opponent was an E-rank adventurer one step above him. Fortunately, the man proved weaker than expected.
By noon, Tauro had resolved the dispute, completed an herb-gathering quest, and returned to the guild.
“Bad things really do happen all at once.”
He spent the afternoon working on the limited-edition boards while muttering complaints to himself.
After concentrating for hours, Tauro finally completed his work.
“That makes… ten!”
Alone in the courtyard, he struck a triumphant pose over the ten limited-edition Reversi boards bound for the royal capital.
“Making all of these in such a short time was exhausting, even with [Precision]…”
[Precision] didn’t change the fact that Tauro had to perform the work himself, so his fatigue was inevitable.
Still, although the ability seemed unremarkable, it was extremely useful.
Once he created one good item, he could reproduce it with literal precision.
Of course, no one could produce something worthwhile without creativity and the talent to support it. Tauro, however, possessed both the imagination fostered by knowledge from his previous life and the skills he had developed through twenty-one years of study.
With those advantages, creating quality work was entirely possible.
“I’m glad I took art class seriously at school!”
This was the fruit of Taro Sato’s blood, sweat, and tears. He had worked diligently at every subject in pursuit of admission to a prestigious university with a famous black-magic club.
The merchant entrusted with selling Reversi in the royal capital visited the guild to check the progress of Tauro’s limited-edition boards.
“How’s the work coming along, Satou? Will they be ready in time?”
“Oh, Paulo. All ten boards are finished.”
Paulo stared in astonishment.
He had merely hoped that the six boards already reserved would be ready before departure. Instead, with several days still remaining, Tauro had completed all ten limited editions.
To Paulo, Tauro Satou suddenly looked like a tree that grew gold.
“Satou—no, please let me call you Tauro. Would you consider giving up adventuring and pursuing this trade instead?”
“Don’t try to poach one of our most promising talents.”
Branch Manager Leo appeared behind Paulo and lightly rapped him on the head.
“You were here, Branch Manager? You should have said something. Tauro’s talent could earn far more money.”
Paulo answered without the slightest sign of remorse.
“If you poach him, I’ll end all business with your trading company.”
“Please, I was only joking.”
Paulo laughed.
“You were serious, and you know it.”
The two men laughed, apparently bringing the matter to an end.
“So what’s happening with the trip to the royal capital?”
Tauro hadn’t yet heard the details, so he questioned them.
“Now that all ten limited-edition boards are ready, I’d gladly leave today. We still need more luxury and standard boards, however, so please give us a few more days. The necessary stock should be ready by then.”
“Do you know who Tauro will be instructing?”
Leo voiced Tauro’s concern for him.
“According to the message from our headquarters in the capital, the client is a noble. We originally thought it was a wealthy person connected to another trading company, but that person was apparently only an intermediary. Tauro, you should have some new clothes made while there’s time. I’ll introduce you to a tailor, and naturally, our company will pay.”
“A noble!?”
The situation was growing larger by the moment, and Tauro could feel nothing but anxiety.
