Chapter 282: Continued—Battle with the Realm Guardian

Tauro was astonished by the Fenrir variant’s tenacity and apparent resistance to every attribute, but then something occurred to him.

Many dragonfolk possessed the light attribute, yet no one in the current group specialized in darkness.

The Fenrir variant was shrouded in darkness and probably resisted that attribute as well, but dark spirit magic included many unusual effects.

Moreover, the creature was already gravely wounded and seemed close to defeat.

A technique that normally failed might work against an enemy this weakened.

Tauro was thinking of paralysis magic.

In the past, he had tested it on a kobold and confirmed that using it against a sufficiently weakened monster could kill the target.

He remembered that experiment now.

With [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme), he could also adjust the spell far more precisely than before.

“I’m going to try dark spirit magic. If its attention shifts to me, please protect me!”

Tauro immediately began chanting.

Tsugumu, captain of the escort team, nodded and moved between Tauro and the Fenrir variant.

The beast had been focused on Tia because of [Great Taunt], but it apparently sensed Tauro’s dark spirit magic.

One head completed a rapid chant and fired a dark ray toward Tauro.

“Its target has changed! It’s coming this way!”

Tsugumu shouted a warning at the same moment Tauro’s dark spirit magic struck the Fenrir variant.

The monster convulsed in agony.

Dark rays erupted wildly in every direction, gouging the ground and shooting into the sky.

One ray flew toward Tauro, but Pella broke away from its leather-armor disguise and sprang forward, instantly deflecting the attack away from him.

Tsugumu, who had moved to shield Tauro, also escaped unharmed.

The Fenrir variant thrashed violently for a time, then suddenly stopped moving.

“…Tauro-dono, what kind of dark spirit magic did you use?”

Tsugumu swallowed hard while staring at the motionless body of the extraordinarily powerful monster.

“Ahaha… It was paralysis magic. I didn’t think an ordinary version would work, so I used [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) to increase its power while concentrating the effect only on the part of the body that controls the heart. It was already so badly wounded and weakened that… I think its heart stopped.”

Tauro was shocked by the result. The spell had consumed a great deal of magical power, and he decided it would be safer not to use such a technique casually.

Tia used [Appraisal] on the Fenrir variant to confirm its death.

It was truly dead.

The anticlimactic end left Tia momentarily speechless. Even though the creature had already been grievously wounded, she had never expected Tauro to deliver the final blow.

It had been an overwhelmingly formidable enemy.

“…Hm? This is a drop item. A key?”

The moment Tia picked it up, the ground began shaking violently.

“What’s happening?”

As everyone looked around in alarm, the earth beside Tia rose and split apart, revealing a pair of doors.

A keyhole was set into them.

The key in Tia’s hand would evidently open the way to the lower floor.

“This may be the first time we’ve ever found a descent mechanism like this. I never imagined the realm guardian itself would hold the key.”

Surprised but unhesitating, Tia inserted the key into the lock of the double doors lying in the ground.

The doors slowly opened by themselves, revealing a staircase leading downward.

“Tia, should we not wait for the conquest team to arrive?”

Tsugumu called after her.

“I believe the rest room is close to this entrance. Look—there’s a side passage below. That should lead to it.”

Without showing any fear, Tia descended far enough to confirm that the room existed.

“…No wonder the conquest team couldn’t find the staircase. No one would expect it to appear only after defeating the realm guardian.”

Tsugumu murmured while peering down the steps.

Meanwhile, Tauro drank a magic-restoration potion and examined the Fenrir variant’s corpse.

The darkness covering its body had vanished upon death, leaving the white fur of a two-headed holy beast.

The twin heads were strange enough by themselves, but the layer of darkness had made the living creature seem almost impossible to comprehend.

In that sense, it resembled Tauro’s equally unusual partner, Pella.

“…May I remove the Fenrir variant’s magic stone?”

“Yes. Tauro-dono delivered the final blow, and without you we might have suffered serious casualties. I don’t believe anyone will object.”

Tsugumu answered for the group, and the others voiced their agreement while tending to the injured.

“Then, excuse me.”

Tauro tried to cut into the creature’s chest with his own knife.

The blade wouldn’t penetrate.

“Monsters from the deeper floors are difficult to dismantle with ordinary knives. Many remain extremely hard even after death.”

One of the support-team members explained this and offered Tauro another knife.

“Use this. It’s specially processed for dismantling. Now that the monster is dead, this blade should be sufficient.”

Tauro borrowed the knife and inserted it into the chest where the magic stone lay.

The blade slid in easily, allowing him to remove the stone.

At that moment—

The Voice of the World echoed inside Tauro’s mind.
