Chapter 275: Days of Transportation
Five days had passed since Tauro used [Spatial Transfer] to send the dragonfolk expedition to the dungeon’s deepest known floor.
During that time, he had continued transporting supply teams and their [Magic Storage] users between the first floor and the 201st-floor rest room.
Because the work was an official request from Chief Ryuga, Tauro stopped at the Adventurers’ Guild each morning to complete the procedure for the free quest, Assistance with Dungeon Conquest, before entering the dungeon.
As usual, the Dragonfolk Village branch had no other requests available.
This quest also provided Tauro with a legitimate adventurer’s reason for remaining in the village, so the lack of alternatives didn’t trouble him.
“Thank you for accompanying me again today.”
After greeting Tsugumu and the other members of his escort outside the guild, Tauro joined the day’s supply team and set out for the dungeon as usual.
“Everyone is carrying unusually large packs today. Is no one in this group able to use [Magic Storage]?”
Tauro had noticed the supply team’s conspicuous loads.
“The person assigned to carry the supplies with [Magic Storage] had to attend a family memorial service. The rest of us have divided the cargo among ourselves.”
One of the supply-team escorts answered while carrying an enormous pack.
“In that case, I can store everything and carry it to the 201st floor.”
Tauro offered without hesitation.
“This is a tremendous amount of cargo. Is your [Magic Storage] large enough?”
“There’s no need to worry. Its capacity is extraordinarily large, and I’ve never reached its limit.”
The supply-team members stared at him in surprise.
“You’ve never reached the limit of your [Magic Storage]?”
“No. Please let me store everyone’s packs.”
Tauro proceeded to put away loads that would have been excessive even for ordinary pack animals, let alone people.
“That’s astonishing. Not even the [Magic Storage] users in the expedition have that much capacity.”
“Perhaps, but everyone in the expedition possesses exceptional combat and support abilities. Mine can’t compare with theirs. Now, let’s head to the dungeon.”
Tauro had grown so accustomed to the dragonfolk’s extraordinary abilities that his sense of what was normal had begun to dull. Their surprise reminded him that he wasn’t ordinary either.
His [Magic Storage] capacity was undeniably abnormal. Life in the dragonfolk village had merely made him forget it.
It was a useful reminder that he also possessed abilities worthy of respect.
With a wry smile, Tauro led the group toward the dungeon.
They soon reached the rest room on the 201st floor, the deepest point currently serving as the expedition’s base.
“Thank you for your hard work while standing by.”
Tauro greeted the support personnel stationed inside the rest room.
They maintained a twenty-four-hour watch so that injured or exhausted expedition members could receive treatment and assistance immediately after retreating from the 202nd floor.
Tauro had transported these personnel from the surface during the previous several days.
“Thank you, Tauro-dono.”
Everyone in the rest room returned his greeting.
“Let me take the supplies back out.”
Tauro began removing the day’s cargo from [Magic Storage].
“Did Tauro-dono carry all of that for the supply team?”
One of the stationed support members noticed the situation and asked.
A member of the supply team explained why their usual [Magic Storage] user was absent.
“That presents a problem. Only two of the personnel currently stationed here possess [Magic Storage]. We can’t divide the cargo among three delivery parties and reach all three expedition groups. Today is particularly important because none of them has received a full resupply since the first day.”
“Then we’ll have to divide the cargo into packs and carry it normally. We’ll need additional guards, but there’s no other choice. Who can be reassigned to the third delivery party?”
The previously quiet rest room became noisy at once.
Because this situation hadn’t been included in the plan, everyone began proposing alternatives.
“If we reassign too many people, what happens when a support team retreats here for emergency aid?”
“That’s still preferable to allowing a supply party to be wiped out.”
“Unexpected situations are precisely why maintaining enough personnel in the rest room is so important.”
The absence of a single dragonfolk with [Magic Storage] had created a serious logistical problem.
“Could I accompany the third party as its baggage carrier? I already have my own escort, and the supply-team guards can travel with us as well. That should provide sufficient protection.”
The dragonfolk immediately began debating Tauro’s suggestion.
“That would place too great a burden on Tauro-dono.”
“But we can’t abandon the expedition’s resupply now.”
“Fool! If anything happened to Tauro-dono, the entire dungeon expedition would lose its transportation route.”
“That’s why he proposed taking additional guards. Tauro-dono’s escorts are reserve members of the support force and among its finest warriors. Adding the supply-team escorts would make that party safer than either of the others.”
Although several members initially objected, the discussion eventually concluded that Tauro’s proposal was the safest workable solution.
Thus, an improvised third supply party was formed with Tauro as its baggage carrier.
