Chapter 250: To a Distant Land…
After saying goodbye to the people close to him, Tauro left Dansas without being seen off by anyone except Aeris, Ragune, and Ankh.
Naturally, this was because Ragune’s [Dimensional Corridor] couldn’t be revealed publicly. To the villagers and adventurers who knew nothing of the circumstances, however, Tauro’s sudden departure immediately inspired surprise and baseless rumors, especially because Black-Gold Wings had only just entered the D-rank band.
“He’s disappeared for a long time before. I’m sure he’s simply gone somewhere again.”
“No, I heard he officially left the team this time and then vanished.”
“Seriously? The youngest adventurer in the village was rising so quickly too!”
“Hey, Black-Gold. You didn’t drive Tauro out of the team, did you?”
Before the lower-ranked adventurers could turn the rumors into something worse, a higher-ranked adventurer who recognized Tauro’s ability confronted Aeris and the others in the guild.
“Don’t be ridiculous! Tauro has his reasons… and the three of us agreed to see him off.”
Aeris answered sharply, though her sadness was obvious.
“From now on, I’ll lead Black-Gold Wings. I hope we can continue to rely on your support whenever we work together.”
Aeris bowed to the adventurers gathered in the guild lobby.
“Ah… of course. Once you enter the D-rank band, you receive many more support requests from higher-ranked teams. We’ll probably have plenty of opportunities to work together.”
The leader of a D-rank team that had once assisted in the operation to rescue Bob and his companions approached Aeris.
“Don’t waste your time on people who spread rumors. We know better.”
The B-rank teams White Night and Zekei, apparently having guessed that there was more to the situation, also offered Aeris their support.
The members of the E-rank teams who had been gossiping immediately fell silent. With both of the Dansas branch’s leading B-rank teams openly backing Black-Gold Wings, no one wanted to attract their attention by continuing.
“So, new leader, what are your plans?”
After the three accepted an orc-extermination request and left the guild, Ankh asked Aeris how she intended to proceed.
“I don’t have a detailed plan yet, although I have a few ideas. It isn’t as though we’ve completely lost contact with Tauro, and I want the three of us to establish a stable formation. For now, we’ll take safe D-rank requests and learn to work without him. Let’s do our best.”
Aeris tried to encourage both herself and the others.
“Right! Tauro said I only needed to check on him occasionally, but I’ll probably visit every few days. It’s my family home, after all.”
Ragune laughed.
“I’m surprised your brother agreed so readily.”
Ankh chuckled at the fact that Tauro would be staying in Drago’s house.
“I hardly return home these days, so Brother apparently thinks this is a good way to make me visit more often.”
Ragune answered with a wry smile at her older brother’s scheme.
“Contacting Tauro will be easy, so that isn’t the problem,” Aeris said. “The problem is how the three of us will fight. Tauro’s no longer with us, so we won’t have his bow, his potions, or his precise instructions during battle.”
As the rear guard who now had to fill much of Tauro’s role, Aeris reminded herself not to underestimate the change.
“Relax, Aeris,” Ankh said. “Your support has always been more than adequate, and Ragune and I both have plenty of experience acting independently. The magic-storage bag Tauro left us and Ragune’s [Magic Storage] will handle our supplies. There’s no reason to panic. We only need time to become accustomed to the new formation.”
Ankh addressed each of her concerns in an effort to ease her anxiety.
“…Yes, I know. Even so, until we get used to fighting without Tauro, both of you must pay close attention to our formation. The requests have become more difficult since we entered the D-rank band, so let’s concentrate on today’s orc extermination.”
Aeris accepted the burden of leading the team in Tauro’s absence and turned her attention to the request.
Several days passed after Tauro’s departure, and life in Dansas continued much as before.
Ragune soon returned to the dragonfolk village to check on him. Tauro wasn’t at Drago’s house, however, and her brother told her what had happened.
“Tauro’s gone to the Adventurers’ Guild branch here. Apparently, he’s troubled because it has no requests at all.”
After hearing this, Ragune returned to Dansas through her [Dimensional Corridor] without meeting Tauro. He was rarely at Drago’s house and spent most of his time out in the village.
Although Ragune couldn’t see him directly, she reported what Drago had told her to Aeris and Ankh. She was also unable to tell Tauro in person that the new three-member formation was taking shape, but leaving the message with Drago would be enough to reassure him.
In this way, Tauro began life alone in the dragonfolk village while Aeris, Ragune, and Ankh began their new life as a three-person team in Dansas.
