Chapter 241: He Gets Away
Tauro and his companions jumped from the central building and hurried toward the western wall. A small gate there already stood partly open.
Tauro climbed the wall and saw a battle unfolding in the nearby forest.
The enemy didn’t register on [Presence Detection], meaning they possessed some form of concealment or detection-inhibition skill. However, Tauro could sense the adventurers and territorial soldiers fighting them. From the allies’ positions, he estimated where an enemy sorcerer would be standing.
“Aeris! Put a barrier with a five-meter radius around the base of that large tree—now!”
“Understood!”
Moments after Aeris completed the barrier, black haze erupted beneath the tree and filled the enclosed space. Every plant inside withered immediately.
Three territorial soldiers and two vanguard members of the B-rank team Hungry Wolf had been trapped within the barrier and died as well.
It was still far less disastrous than the alternative. Dozens of soldiers and three adventurer teams were deployed around that position. Without Aeris’s barrier, the haze could have killed a large portion of the western force.
The enemy agent carrying the classified document had been watching from a concealed position farther away. Seeing that the breakthrough had failed, he turned back toward the small gate—directly toward Tauro’s group.
The man assessed the situation immediately. Holding the rolled document in one hand, he drew his sword with the other.
“You can’t protect that document from all four of us by yourself,” Ankh said, raising his greatsword. “Surrender.”
“No. I don’t have to. Salk! Take this and run!”
The assassin threw the document over Tauro’s group.
Their eyes followed it instinctively. The enemy used that instant to slash at Ankh, who barely caught the blow on his great magic sword.
Tauro turned and saw a startled Salk catch the document. He had apparently escaped from the underground cell.
Tauro raised his bow.
“Put it on the ground and step away.”
“I don’t know what this is,” Salk said with a grin, “but running off with it looks like a good way to make trouble for you.”
His outline blurred. Through [Escape], he blended into the background and vanished from ordinary sight.
“He disappeared!” Aeris exclaimed.
Tauro didn’t panic. He fired immediately along the route he expected Salk to take.
“Gah!”
The arrow only grazed Salk’s arm, but the pain broke his concealment for an instant and made him drop the document. He vanished again and continued fleeing.
Tauro anticipated his movement and fired a second arrow, but it struck the ground. He then lowered his bow rather than risk losing the recovered document by pursuing blindly.
Behind him, Ankh and Ragune finally defeated the assassin who had delayed them. The man had been skilled enough to hold both at bay for longer than expected.
“That took more time than it should have,” Ankh said, sweating. “Everything all right, Leader?”
“He escaped, but we recovered the classified document.”
Tauro picked it up and held it aloft.
The capture of the Assassins’ Guild stronghold was completed about an hour later.
After a fierce battle, Golden Mane killed the enemy leader. Whatever Raiga’s shortcomings as a commander, Golden Mane was unquestionably an elite A-rank team, and the stronghold leader had been powerful enough to challenge them.
Tauro now understood that pursuing the man with only Black-Gold Wings might have ended in the destruction of his entire team.
