Chapter 225: The Dragonfolk Village (1)

Inside the house shared by Ragune and her older brother, Drago struggled to process one astonishing fact after another.

A group claiming to be his sister’s friends had literally appeared from nowhere. One of them was the village’s savior, yet he was only a boy. Worse, they hadn’t arrived through a newly awakened form of Ragune’s ability. That meant they had somehow bypassed the village’s many layers of protective wards.

This was a serious incident.

Should he first serve tea to their benefactor? Should he call the chief and report what had happened? No – before either of those, he had to determine whether these intruders were safe.

Drago’s thoughts tangled together until he could no longer think clearly. Then the boy spoke.

I think we should all sit down and calm ourselves first. Drago, please take a seat.

Drago obediently followed the advice that he, as the homeowner, should have given. Ragune and Aeris sat on the bed, Tauro and Ankh used the chairs beside the table, and Drago took the chair nearest the door.

As I said earlier, my name is Tauro. Ragune and the three of us belong to the same adventuring team. We came here today while testing a combination of Ragune’s [Dimensional Corridor] and my [Spatial Transfer]. I apologize for appearing without warning.

What!? [Spatial Transfer]!?

The name of the legendary ability stunned Drago all over again. If the boy truly possessed it, did that mean he was a bearer of [Hero]?

No living dragonfolk currently possessed [Spatial Transfer]. Some people in the present generation had been born with [Hero], but even a hero wasn’t guaranteed to acquire the ability. Heroes differed greatly in talent, and [Spatial Transfer] was said to appear in only one hero every several generations.

Did this child possess that legendary skill despite not being dragonfolk? Drago’s head began spinning again.

Kill me…! Ah, excuse me.

Overwhelmed by the succession of shocks, Drago had let an alarming phrase slip from his mouth.

What?

Tauro, Aeris, and Ankh all recognized the same habit they regularly heard from Ragune.

Her brother says it too!

The three made the same silent observation.

That habit raises another question, but your brother is still confused. Ragune, could you explain the situation to him?

Brother, Tauro isn’t a hero, but he can use [Spatial Transfer]. As he explained, they reached this room by combining it with my [Dimensional Corridor]. Do you understand?

Ragune knew that her brother must be deeply shaken if a phrase he rarely used anymore had escaped him, so she spoke slowly until he calmed down.

I’m sorry. I lost my composure. When I become confused, memories of the village’s training return to me, and that phrase slips out. I say it especially often around Ragune because she only recently completed the same training. Please overlook it. So, you came here only because of an experiment, not for some other purpose?

That’s correct. It would also help us relax if the people surrounding the house lowered their guard.

[Presence Detection] had already told Tauro that the house was encircled by exceptionally powerful dragonfolk warriors. Some were difficult to sense because of concealment abilities. They held no killing intent, but the pressure they emitted felt almost crushing.

Ankh had noticed them as well and was sweating heavily.

I apologize. Our defenses detect an outsider entering the village and automatically summon the garrison. I can’t explain the system in greater detail. I’ll tell them what happened, but afterward you’ll probably have to meet the chief.

Drago left the room to address the warriors outside.

I’ll go too. Everyone, remain here.

Ragune followed him.

Voices soon carried through the wall: ‘Ragune again?’ ‘What? [Spatial Transfer]?’ and ‘The village’s savior is here?’

After the murmuring spread through the group outside, Ragune returned.

The garrison captain wants to escort all of us to the chief. What do you want to do?

Tauro exchanged looks with Aeris and Ankh.

We don’t really have a choice, do we?

Both of them nodded.
