Chapter 219: Magic Experiments

Upon reaching the forest outside the village, Tauro and Aeris immediately began testing his new ability, [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme).

First, Tauro used water-spirit magic. His ability with it was still limited to everyday uses, such as producing drinking water.

“The amount of water is the same as before, but my magic power is barely decreasing. It feels as though all the power I used to waste is no longer being consumed.”

“Really? Then I must waste magic power whenever I cast spells too. I want to learn [Magic Manipulation]…”

“Now that we’ve confirmed the improved efficiency, I want to try the experiment I was really interested in.”

Tauro’s meaningful tone revealed that this had been his true purpose.

“What else can it do?”

“It’s called [Magic Manipulation]—and mine is even (Extreme). Don’t you think it might do more than merely reduce wasted magic power?”

“Such as?”

Aeris couldn’t imagine what he meant.

“Take the water produced by this simple spirit magic.”

Tauro produced another trickle of water from his hand.

“What about it?”

“If I control its shape and pressure through visualization and magical manipulation…”

The gentle stream gradually became thinner, faster, and sharper. When Tauro directed it at a tree, it carved a line into the trunk.

“What!?”

Aeris stared at the water’s unexpected force.

“And if I add more magic power…”

The narrow stream sharpened further. It sliced into the tree like a blade, and before the trunk had been cut completely through, the tree tilted under its own weight and crashed to the ground.

“What was that?”

Tauro’s beginner-level spirit magic had severed a tree, leaving Aeris unable to process what she had seen.

“I reproduced a high-pressure water cutter by compressing and controlling the water with magic power. The original spell is still beginner-level spirit magic, but [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) lets me change its form and power through visualization and control.”

Aeris remained speechless.

“Next is fire-spirit magic.”

Tauro produced a lighter-sized flame at his fingertip. With a low roar, its color changed from red to blue-violet.

“This should do more than light a fire. It ought to be hot enough to melt iron.”

“With beginner-level spirit magic?”

“It’s like a very high-temperature burner. It could be used for welding or cutting.”

“That’s practically advanced magic.”

“The foundation is still a beginner spell.”

“Then can you alter [Stone Pebble] too?”

“I think so. If I sharpen a fist-sized stone into a pointed projectile, it should have much greater penetration.”

Tauro used [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) to reshape [Stone Pebble] and launched it at a tree. The pointed stone buried itself deep in the trunk.

“That’s hardly different from an earth-attribute rock spear. It’s smaller, but the power is comparable.”

Aeris was stunned.

“I have another idea.”

Tauro divided [Stone Pebble] into countless tiny pellets and fired them in a spread like a shotgun blast. Each pellet was weaker, but together they struck a wide area of the trees.

“At this point, there’s almost nothing you can’t imitate as a magician.”

Aeris groaned in disbelief.

Tauro continued experimenting.

“With wind, I can compress a breeze and turn it into an invisible blade.”

He extended his hand toward a tree, and an unseen slash cut across its trunk.

“This one seems weaker than the others, but being invisible could make it useful.”

Tauro agreed that its value would depend on how it was used.

“Shouldn’t you test that spell next?”

Aeris suggested, having remembered another possibility.

“I was about to.”

Tauro smiled, having apparently planned the same thing from the beginning.

“[Spatial Transfer].”

He instantly moved one meter away.

“This consumes far less magic power than before too!”

Tauro was genuinely delighted. Previously, the spell had drained so much power that using it in practice was difficult.

He now understood just how much magic power he had been wasting. He also wanted to ask Ragune whether [Spatial Transfer] could be combined with [Dimensional Corridor].

“Then the last test is [Creation Magic (Weak)], right?”

Aeris pointed to the magic Tauro had avoided using most.
