Chapter 206: The Reborn Black-Gold Wings’ True Strength
The captain of the Dareder territorial troops, who had narrowly escaped death, approached the adventurers who had rescued his unit.
“Thank the gods! Are you adventurers from the Dareder branch?”
Because Ankh was the oldest member and wore heavy armor, the captain naturally addressed him as though he were the leader.
Ankh glanced toward Tauro.
Tauro was distributing potions and treating injured soldiers, while Aeris supported them with healing magic. Ragune and Ankh had begun dismantling the defeated monsters and collecting proof of subjugation.
“We’re from the Dansas branch,” Ankh said. “You don’t need to make such a fuss over thanking us. Isn’t that right, Leader?”
The captain followed his gaze and stared at Tauro in surprise.
“We were participating in the same free quest,” Tauro said. “We’ll claim the monsters our team defeated, and your unit can claim its own results. Both groups were simply carrying out their assigned work.”
Tauro didn’t intend to use the rescue to create a debt or arrange a later ceremony of thanks.
“You’re the leader? You’re remarkably young,” the captain said. “Even so, you saved our lives, and we’re grateful.”
He hesitated, embarrassed by the defeat.
“I don’t mean this as an excuse, but that monster wasn’t an ordinary troll. It was a Troll Leader – a rare, comparatively intelligent variant. It trapped our formation and coordinated the other monsters against us. The guild classifies it as a C-rank subjugation target, so defeating it should earn a substantial reward.”
That information was valuable. Ragune had delivered the finishing blow, but the records of every member who contributed to the kill could receive greater recognition.
“Thank you for telling us,” Tauro replied. “May Black-Gold Wings claim the subjugation credit for the monsters we finished?”
“Of course. We defeated a fair number before encountering the Troll Leader, and I won’t claim anything your team killed. Please also submit the cost of the potions you used through the guild. That should make reimbursement easier for both sides.”
The captain then asked, “What’s your team’s name?”
“Black-Gold Wings.”
The captain repeated it quietly after Tauro turned away.
“Black-Gold Wings… I’ve never heard the name, but they must be one of the Dansas branch’s strongest teams.”
He had no way of knowing that many Dansas adventurers currently dismissed them as small fry.
“Tauro,” Ragune called. “This Troll Leader is the last body, but my [Magic Storage] is full. Can you take it?”
“Certainly. Take out the other monsters as well, and I’ll store everything together.”
Tauro placed the Troll Leader in [Magic Storage]. Ragune then produced the orc corpses she had collected earlier.
Orc meat could be sold as food, making intact bodies valuable. More importantly to Ragune, it was the main ingredient in her beloved pork cutlets, so abandoning it had never been an option.
A mountain of orcs appeared in front of the astonished soldiers. A moment later, Tauro stored the entire pile and made it vanish just as suddenly.
After exchanging final greetings with the captain, Black-Gold Wings began the journey home.
“With these results, Ragune may be promoted into the E-rank band!” Aeris said.
“I think so,” Tauro agreed. “She accomplished an extraordinary amount during this quest.”
“Will I finally reach the same rank band as everyone else?” Ragune asked, visibly excited.
Being the team’s only F-rank member had bothered her ever since she joined. That was why the others had arranged for her to deliver so many finishing blows, and she was delighted that her effort might finally close the gap.
“If the evaluation is generous, perhaps all of us will be promoted,” Ankh said.
“Aeris and I are already E-plus, so the guild may assess us for entry into the D-rank band again,” Tauro replied. “Ankh may also advance within the E-rank band.”
All four looked forward to the results.
When they returned to the Dansas branch and reported at reception, Chloe stared at the enormous collection of proof and materials.
“All of this came from your team? Hand me your tags. I need to check the individual records immediately.”
Chloe had never dismissed Black-Gold Wings. She still considered them one of the branch’s most promising teams and expected the addition of Ragune and Ankh to restore the strength they had lost when Shin and Rumeya departed.
Even so, the results exceeded her expectations.
The team had defeated a large number of orcs, an ogre, and a rare Troll Leader, all of them targets above the personal ranks of some members. When Chloe examined the records stored on the tags, she discovered that an extraordinary share of the confirmed finishing blows belonged to F-rank Ragune.
Looking over the evidence, Chloe realized that the reborn Black-Gold Wings had become even more formidable than she had anticipated.
