Chapter 177: A Disappointing Result
The Royal Capital curry shop got off to a promising start on its opening day.
Curry was completely unfamiliar to the city’s residents, both in appearance and aroma, but its spicy fragrance stirred their appetites.
People drawn by the smell stopped outside the restaurant. Through the glass windows, they could see Tauro’s hired customers filling many of the seats.
Seeing that others were already eating there gave the hesitant passersby the final push they needed. One after another, they decided to try the restaurant for themselves.
Women with a fondness for sweets were especially captivated by the desserts displayed behind the glass.
The selection was largely the same as at the first shop, though the fruit cakes and fruit-and-cream crepes used whatever rare fruits were available in the Royal Capital that day.
Pudding, cookies, and sweet bean buns were offered as usual. Pudding in particular proved just as devastatingly effective in the capital as it had elsewhere. The women could scarcely look away from the strange, glossy dessert that trembled and jiggled on its plate.
Because sugar was expensive, the desserts were priced somewhat high. Even so, their colorful appearance—and the delighted praise of everyone who tasted them—persuaded the capital’s residents that they were worth the cost.
Once people entered and tried the food, winning them over was almost guaranteed.
“This curry is delicious!”
“I can’t get enough of this spiciness!”
“I love being able to choose my own toppings!”
“Exactly! And having a sweet fruit cake afterward is the best!”
“The sweetness tastes even better after the spicy curry!”
“This pudding is incredible! Is this what nobles normally eat?”
The first customers gave the food overwhelmingly positive reviews.
All the restaurant needed now was for word to spread.
By the end of opening day, Tauro felt relieved by the response.
Products made from [Non-Wetting Cloth] were also selling well, particularly those intended for military use.
In addition to the large order previously placed by the Royal Guard, bulk orders had arrived from the Royal Knights and the city guard.
At this rate, the Garfish Company was close to becoming an official military supplier.
Tauro was pleased that the profits would repay the company for the money and effort it had spent helping him arrange meetings with powerful nobles during the Van Dyne affair.
He was also glad the business was thriving because he intended to entrust the Garfish Company with the curry shop’s management from then on.
Once he finally had time to breathe, Tauro turned his attention to something he had been eager to test: the [Spatial Transfer] skill he had acquired in the dungeon.
He had been thrilled to gain what sounded like a true cheat ability but had been too busy to examine it.
In stories about other worlds, instant teleportation was the sort of ultimate power a hero gained after mastering his abilities.
Perhaps Tauro could now return to Dansas Village in the blink of an eye.
Unable to contain his excitement, he accepted a medicinal-herb gathering quest from the Adventurers’ Guild and headed into the forest outside the Royal Capital to experiment.
“What a useless skill!”
Tauro dropped to his knees in despair.
He had enthusiastically tested [Spatial Transfer] while gathering herbs, only to discover that it moved him roughly one meter and consumed an enormous amount of magic power.
He took a deep breath and drank a magic recovery potion.
Calm down. There has to be some use for it.
Then inspiration struck.
“That’s it! I can pass through walls! I could instantly enter a locked room and—wait, I could just use the door! The magic cost is far too high for that!”
In his frustration, Tauro pantomimed flipping an invisible table.
“Haa… haa… Calm down. It must have another use. I obtained it from a dungeon, so there has to be something impressive about it. Then again, [Creation Magic (Weak)] had similarly terrible specifications when I acquired it after destroying the labyrinth core!”
He flew into another fit of frustration.
“Haa… haa… haa… That’s right! I’ll tie myself tightly to a tree so I can’t move. Then… [Spatial Transfer]!”
In an instant, Tauro slipped free of the rope and appeared beside the tree.
“Success! Wait, I was expecting it to fail so I could flip the table again! Seriously, read the mood!”
Alone in the forest, Tauro continued swinging wildly between triumph and outrage while complaining irrationally to his newly acquired skill.
Thanks for the chapter. I do like how his abilities aren’t just straight-forward and requires some creativity to use (since he doesn’t have an unlimited mana bar like an OP reincarnator); he’s still OP for his allrounder abilities though.
