Chapter 154: Since the Attempt Failed…
By the time Tauro reached the royal palace, the sun was setting and the gates were about to close.
He hurriedly drew the shortsword bearing the royal crest and held it up for the gatekeeper to see.
“The royal crest! You must be Tauro. Unfortunately, it’s long past your appointed time, and we can’t admit visitors at this hour…”

Tauro headed back toward the inn while sorting through what had happened.
He had probably been targeted because the enemy regarded him as an obstacle to kidnapping Aeris. He had interfered with Uwaakin repeatedly, and Uwaakin must have convinced the Marchioness of Van Dyne that Tauro was a serious threat.
Now they had genuinely tried to kill him.
“So they’re finally getting serious… Still, attacking me with a first-rate assassin in broad daylight means they must be desperate. We have to settle this before Aeris is harmed.”
Tauro considered pretending to be dead, as characters often did in stories from his previous life, in order to deceive the enemy.
After thinking it through, however, he realized that remaining alive and visible would make the enemy’s objective even clearer. If they continued targeting him, the poisonous needles would be directed away from Aeris and the Royal Guard knights, neither of whom could necessarily survive them.
“Now that I have [Complete Poison Resistance]…”
Even so, Tauro had no desire to be poisoned again. The pain had been unbearable, and he truly had come within a hair’s breadth of death.
“When someone hits you, hit back twice as hard… Double payback.”
He had never expected to say something like that seriously, but the words escaped his lips.
Tauro therefore returned to the inn openly, just as he normally would. If the assassin saw him alive, the shock might cause his [Presence Concealment] to falter long enough for Tauro’s [Presence Detection] to catch him.
When Tauro reached the inn, he detected a sudden burst of astonishment nearby.
The presence immediately began retreating.

Tauro briefly considered giving chase, but the opponent was a first-rate assassin. Pursuing him alone could invite another counterattack.
For now, simply confirming the assassin’s surprise was enough.
Besides, Tauro was ravenously hungry. [Super Recovery and Regeneration] had probably consumed a great deal of energy while dragging him back from the brink of death.

“This may have been an assassin from the Assassins’ Guild,” one knight said.
“The use of a blowpipe and a needle coated with lethal poison certainly fits their methods,” another agreed.
“More importantly, how did you survive?”
That seemed to be the question all four knights cared about most. They surrounded Tauro and checked him from head to toe.
“Ha ha… I have poison resistance, so I was all right.”
Some of Tauro’s abilities were difficult to explain, so he kept his answer deliberately vague.
“Even with poison resistance, surviving a toxin that stopped your heart is nothing short of miraculous.”
The Royal Guard knights were stunned.
“If the Marchioness of Van Dyne has hired the Assassins’ Guild, we must be even more vigilant than before.”
As the knights discussed strengthening their security, Aeris stood nearby with tears in her eyes, shaken by how close Tauro had come to dying.
“I’m fine, Aeris. See? I’m standing here in perfect health.”
“I know… but I’m sorry. This happened because of me.”
Aeris sniffled and fought back her tears.

He did, but it wasn’t “complete”, and a sufficiently virulent toxin would probably overwhelm it within a few seconds. It probably delayed his death by a few seconds, and that turns out to have been enough. On the other hand, the fact that he DID have abnormality resistance yet nearly died anyway tends to imply that this was a professional assassin’s “unsurvivable” poison.
Some assassin is likely to be very shocked in the near future.
As a result, he is now completely invulnerable to poisons, but still only very resistant to other abnormal statuses.
