Chapter 150: The Miraculous Shortsword

Tauro and Aeris entered the room reserved for Fifth Prince Fleue within the royal palace.

Tauro was frankly astonished by how much Fleue had changed since their last meeting. The prince’s former roundness had vanished, as though his growth spurt had consumed it, leaving him tall and slender.

“It’s been a long time, my friend. You too, young lady. Please, sit.”

Prince Fleue calmly offered them seats.

“Do you know why I summoned you today?”

The question was clearly directed at Tauro.

Tauro sensed that Fleue’s mood was unusual, but he didn’t know the reason. Was this about Aeris?

“No, Your Highness.”

“Then I shall tell you. Why did you come to the Royal Capital without visiting me first, Tauro?”

The way Fleue said it briefly revealed the prince Tauro remembered. Fleue had matured, but his earnest nature hadn’t changed.

“I didn’t want to drag Your Highness into my problems.”

“How could I refuse to help when my friend is in trouble? Of course I’m offended.”

Fleue sighed theatrically and gave Tauro a sidelong look.

“I should’ve informed you first. Thank you for your concern.”

Tauro bowed.

“Good. Then tell me everything. I’m sure your companion, the daughter of Marquis Van Dyne, wishes to do the same.”

Tauro and Aeris explained the situation surrounding House Van Dyne.

“I see. House Van Dyne is an important pillar of the kingdom. I’m certain my elder siblings would agree that its legitimate bloodline mustn’t be severed in this manner. Marquis Van Dyne has also rendered great service to the country through dungeon exploration. I’ll speak to His Majesty and Mother.”

“Thank you, Your Highness.”

Aeris bowed deeply.

“There’s no need. I may not be able to do much, but a companion of my friend is important to me as well. You may rely on me. I’ll call you Aeris, so you may call me Fleue.”

“Then, while we’re here, I shall call you Fleue-sama.”

Fleue nodded in satisfaction.

“You understand perfectly, Aeris. Tauro insists on addressing me with such stiff formality.”

“Your Highness, I’m a commoner. I can’t speak as freely as Aeris. If someone overheard me, I could lose my head.”

Tauro laughed as Fleue complained.

“I understand. I won’t blame you for being cautious. Still, a friend remains a friend. When you’re in trouble, depend on me.”

Fleue rose, disappeared briefly into an adjoining room, and returned carrying a sheathed shortsword.

“Until now, I could only thank you with money. This time, I commissioned something from a craftsman whose reputation has risen considerably.”

He presented the weapon to Tauro.

“The royal crest is engraved beneath the cover on its hilt. Father gave me permission to bestow it upon you. If you encounter serious trouble, reveal the crest. It’ll prove that you possess royal sanction and should allow you to request assistance throughout the kingdom.”

Tauro removed the small cover and found the royal crest beneath it. Surprised by the gift, he examined the weapon with [True Eye] – and was startled again.

Shortsword Tauro. Forged by master blacksmith Angus. Agility +6. Swordsmanship +4. Grants the light attribute.

“Was this made by a blacksmith in Saisi?”

“Sebas reported that the craftsman was based there, the same city you came from. Hmm? Do you possess [Appraisal], Tauro?”

“Not [Appraisal], but I have an ability that produces similar information.”

“I see. This was one of several candidates. By coincidence, the smith had named it ‘Tauro,’ and I liked that name. Please accept it.”

Fleue offered the shortsword once more.

The royal crest made the gift feel almost unbearably weighty, but Tauro had never expected the weapon itself to be Angus’s work. Even more remarkably, Angus had named a royal commission after Tauro.

Angus couldn’t possibly have known that the weapon would be given to the boy he had once called his master. One coincidence had followed another until the result seemed almost miraculous.

Tauro couldn’t refuse.

“I accept it with deepest gratitude.”

He knelt and reverently received the shortsword Tauro from Fleue.

At that moment, the Voice of the World echoed inside his mind.

“One of the activation conditions for the special skill [&%$#], <Miracle Worker>, has been fulfilled. [Good Luck] acquired.”

Once again, Tauro gained a new ability when he least expected it.
